Mandrake, I have never seriously read any book or anything about mathematics apart from what was taught in school/college. Only thing, I can say is, I have always tried to break-up all the formulaes that I come across to smallest possible fundamental step and that is how I remember anything related to numbers.

Give me some time (bit busy with office work ), I will try to post few maths "tools" that I use. I am not sure, if I can write down my thoughts clearly but will surely try. Agar aap mujhe jhel sakte ho to . Also, I don't know where to begin, most of the things I know is nothing but elementary Mathematics. Like divisibility rules, number theory, prime numbers etc... So I doubt if I can do any value addition. I will be more than happy if I can add to someone's knowledge and so I will surely give it a shot. I am sure there will be many others here who can share their knowledge too .

Everyone knows what a duel is. Until the 20th century, men showed their honor by dueling each other. One participant shot at the other, and if the other participant lived, he was given a shot to kill. Many famous men were involved in duels, with the Burr-Hamilton being the most famous, and Andrew Jackson being one of the most prolific.

Anyway, a variation of the duel is the concept of the truel, where three participants are involved. In the this riddle, Participant A is a perfect shot, and anytime he shoots, he kills with certainty. Participant B is a pretty good shot, and anytime he shoots, there is a probability of 0.5 that he will kill. Finally, participant C is a lousy shot, and anytime he shoots, there is a probability of 0.33 that he will kill.

To make things fair, the order of shooting is C, then B, and finally A. This sequence is repeated until only participant is left alive.

With participant C being first, what is his best strategy at surviving?

Alternatively, he asks for 3 chances (don't most of us, typically? ).
Then he shoots A first, misses. Shoots B next, misses. Shoots A again and succeeds.

With A outta the way, B and C make truce and go for a beer

If C starts and misses, does B shoot back at C or at A? I mean does sequence C,B,A imply order of shooting or order of duels (C to B, B to A and then C to survivor of "B to A")?

This will get ugly if contingent probability comes into picture .

And to answere Visu's query on where am I getting these puzzles.. curtesy Hubby . and I dont have access to all of them.. get the next only ony after solving the first one.. which am able to some times.. and threaten or blackmail him to get the answer other times ( after a few unsuccessful tries and enough clues)

Well.. mujhe to probability kabhi samajh hi nahi aayee thi
and aapke to dimag ka rust utar raha hai par mere dimag ka dahi ban raha hai . I love maths as much as a deer abut to die loves its predator.

actually there is no clue to this one.. only a pretty simple solution if you think about it : ). Ive just put something there to direct you towards it.

Yeah I assumed that. I have kind of come up with a strategy but cannot work out the numbers now (already 1 am, feeling sleepy ). I think I won't be able to exactly calculate the probability of C surviving. I am still working on it.

I think C should hit B first and pray that he misses (or he can misfire the shot if he can) because if he hits B then he will run into A who is a super killer and if he misses against A, he is surely gone. So probability of C surviving when he hits B is less.

C cannot afford to start with A and miss. As doing so will be "the end" for C.

On other hand, if he misses B and B in turn misses C (chances are 50%), then A and B will have a duel and one of them will perish. C should try to shoot whoever is left amongst A and B. Here probability of C surviving will be relatively higher.

Going by numbers I am getting C's highest chances for survival while he aims at B first are something like 5/18 and when he aims at A first is 2/9. But as I said, I am not too convinced of these numbers. What I am sure though is that the strategy is correct.

Ok bata dijiye if no one else is trying... But I think, if C can shoot anywhere, he should shoot towards the ground in first attempt and let A and B fight it out. Then attempt to kill whoever is left.

C should take first aim in the air.. so that B who has better chances of killing gets to A .. if he succeeds.. good enough.. else A will surely eliminate B. And then C next round main dekhega.. kya karna hai.
