QUOTE(vivekpm @ Oct 17 2005, 03:43 PM) *

One more coin puzzle, nothing to do with weighing though...

You're in a dark room with 50 coins, exactly 18 of which are heads up. You are allowed to move around the coins or flip some or all of them, if you wish. However, it's too dark to tell what you're moving or flipping (you can't figure it out by touch either). Your job is to split the coins into two groups, each of which has the same number of heads up coins.

Cheers,

If this has something to do with Probablity then I give up sad1.gif

Nope. Not probability. Just pure Mathematics. Want another hint?

Ok... This may or may not be helpful. But still...

If you have not yet figured out, you are allowed to split the coins in two groups not necessarily two equal groups...

Ok i think i got it .....we will make two halves of 32 and 18 and reverse all the coins we have in 18.......

but we can also get into a situation when we dont have any heads on the both side...is that fine wink2.gif

Still, I didnt get how will this ensure that there are equal no. of heads up coins in both the groups? unsure.gif

lets say. we have 2 heads in 32 ..that means we have 16 heads and two tails in 18 ...right ??
now when we reverse all the coin in 18 we will get 2 heads and 16 tails.which is equal to the no. of heads in another half..
similarly try other combinations smile1.gif

You got it right Vikram!!!

Here is a mathematical explaination.

Divide the coins in two groups one having 32 coins (Group A) and one having 18 coins (Group sunglasses2.gif.

Now assume that Group B has "n" heads. This means it has 18-n tails (obviously).

Also, since there were 18 heads initially, Group A will have 18-n heads (since group B has n heads).

So if you reverse Group B, you will have 18-n heads which is same as Group A smile1.gif

Good one Vikram...

Ok Another simple one

Three men stay at a hotel for the night. The innkeeper charges thirty dollars per room per night. The men rent one room; each pays ten dollars. The bellhop leads the men to their room. Later, the innkeeper discovers he has overcharged the men and asks the bellhop to return five dollars to them. On the way upstairs, the bellhop realizes that five dollars can't be evenly split among three men, so he decides to keep two dollars for himself and return one dollar to each man.
At this point, the men have paid nine dollars each, totalling 27. The bellhop has two, which adds up to 29. Where did the thirtieth dollar go?
