QUOTE(amicable @ Oct 14 2005, 02:21 PM) *
Ok.. Here's My Guess:

I will label boxes as A, B, C, D and E
and each coin in each box as 1A, 2A, 3A... for set A, 1B, 2B, 3B for set B, etcc.. for coins in all the 5 boxes.

Now, for simplicity of calculation (and also because I like the tables of 10 and 9 smile1.gif ) I will take:

1 coin from box A
2 coins from box B
3 coins from box C
4 coins from box D
and no coins from box E

And I will keep these coins on weighing pan. From the readings, I will identify which box has defective coins. Here's how:

Box A is defective if reading is 99 because:
9A + (2 * 10)B + (3 * 10)D + (4 * 10)D
9 + 20 + 30 + 40
= 99

Similarly,
Box B is defective if reading is 98 because:
10 + 18 + 30 + 40 = 98

Box C is defective if reading is 97 because:
10 + 20 + 27 + 40 = 97

Box D is defective if reading is 96 because:
10 + 20 + 30 + 36 = 96

Box E is defective if reading is 100 because:
10 + 20 + 30 + 40 = 100

( Assumption: Each box has atleast 4 coins smile1.gif )

Is this approach correct? unsure.gif

Bulls-eye!!! Good approach. 10/10 smile1.gif

Will try and post next puzzle tonight. Lots of posts to read.

Cheers,

One more coin puzzle, nothing to do with weighing though...

You're in a dark room with 50 coins, exactly 18 of which are heads up. You are allowed to move around the coins or flip some or all of them, if you wish. However, it's too dark to tell what you're moving or flipping (you can't figure it out by touch either). Your job is to split the coins into two groups, each of which has the same number of heads up coins.

Cheers,

another one..
Two mathematicians, Albert and Isaac, chat. Isaac says he has three children who all have the same birthday (but who weren't necessarily born in the same year). Albert asks their ages. Isaac replies, "The product of the ages of my children is 72." Albert points out that this is not enough information to determine their ages. Isaac responds with another clue -- he tells Albert the sum of the ages of his children. But Albert again points out that there is not enough information. Finally Isaac says, "My youngest child is named Galileo." At last, Albert correctly determines the ages of Isaac's children. What are the ages?

2 6 and 6?

Following information is available from the problem statement:
1. Product of the ages of childern is 72
2. Since Albert cannot figure out the ages after knowing the sum, this implies that sum of the ages of children is not unique.

Following can be possible ages if first condition is considered:

Ages:
1 1 72
1 2 36
1 3 24
1 4 18
1 6 12
1 8 9
2 2 18
2 3 12
2 4 9
2 6 6
3 3 8
3 4 6

All these multiply to 72.

Now their respective sums are as follows:
74,39,28,23,19,18,22,17,15,14,14,13

All the sums are unique except for 2,6,6 and 3,3,8.

Issac said that his "youngest" child is named Galileo. So now assuming that in the later set (3,3,8), first two children with ages 3 are twins only 2,6,6 can have youngest child. And so the answer is 2,6,6.

But if this solution is correct, problem should have said that two out of three children are twins. And I hope you won't mind if I say that I used a program to find factors of 72. Not that it was tough, but I am lazy wink2.gif

Allergic to the word coin itself? Coin ke badle aur kuch sochke solve kar lo. It has nothing to do with weights and all smile1.gif

Since you aren't ruling out lateral thinking, Vivek, here's my take on your coins in the dark room wink2.gif

Gather up all the coins, and make two equal heaps from them.
Then, stand up all coins on their edges.

This way, both groups have exactly the same number of coins with the head up: zero!

wink2.gif

Now prove me wrong as usual wink2.gif

Good one!!! And as always you are not wrong here too smile1.gif. Aapko wrong prove karke kahan jaana hai tongue.gif.

But I want a solution in which the coins are not standing on their edges but they are lying on one of their sides down.

Cheers,

smile1.gif Yup Bhrigu korrect .. few more to lighten up the mood smile1.gif before I attempt Vivek's problem ( just tryign to gather mah courage)

From the beginning of eternity
To the end of time and space
To the beginning of every end
And the end of every place.
What am I?

I have hands that wave at you,
Though I never say goodbye.
It's cool for you to be with me,
Especially when I say, "HI."
What am I?

As a whole, I am both safe and secure.
Behead me, and I become a place of meeting.
Behead me again, and I am the partner of ready.
Restore me, and I become the domain of beasts.
What am I?

Pronounced as one letter,
And written with three,
Two letters there are,
And two only in me.
I'm double, I'm single,
I'm black, blue, and gray,
I'm read from both ends,
And the same either way.
What am I?

and MJ .. you back to your nautanki's .. aapki intelligence par kisne kab shaq kiya?? main to katora le kar saath saath ghoomti rehti hoon in home of catching something that might overflow your brian .. considerign the speed at which matter gets added to it
