One more thing, just reading the autobiography of Kidar Sharma, and in it, it is mentioned that Shamim was niece of Khurshid Begum (that is a news for me!). Khursheed Begum was very jealous of her niece.

Quoted below :-

"When we came to selecting the stars for the movie (Arman - 1943) I insisted that we hire Mr. Motilal, as my Hero and Shamim as my heroine. Shamim, was the niece of the top star Khurshid, of Ranjit Movietone. Mr Shah. said, "If you take Shamim, Khurshid will never work with you in any film, as she is very jealous of her young and charming niece Shamim ..."

Shamim acted in many pre-partition movies including Armaan (1943), Sanyasi (1945), Pehle Aap (1944), Jwar Bhata (1944), Sindoor (1947) etc. Migrated to Pakistan worked in few Pakistani movies and married director/producer Anwar Kamal Pasha and ended her film career.

Portraits of Khursheed and Shamim

My fav song from this movie is Shamshad Begum's "Jab usne gaisou bikhraye badal aaya jhoom kai" picturized on Sulochana Chatterji.

Couple of things about this movie :-

Heroine (Roohi) of this movie was Nasreen (Zarina Agha), Salma Agha's Mom. Nasreen was daughter of actress Anwari and actor/music director Rafiq Ghaznavi. According to article written by Manto on Ghaznavi, Rafiq Ghaznavi had fetish for women of "Bazaar" wink.gif . He had extramarital love affairs with many women from that area including Anwari, and Nasreen was born out of wedlock. Once Rafiq Ghaznavi said that he dont remember how many children he had! tongue1.gif He had another daughter from courtesan Zohra, and her name was Parveen. She joined films under the name of Shahina and was seen in few Pakistani movies. Rafiq Ghaznavi also had "proper" or family wife and from her he had a daughter named Zahira who was director's Zia Sarhadi's first wife. Nasreen only worked in 2 movies before partition, Ek Roz and Shahjehan before settling for retired life in Pakistan. She died last year in London.

Raagini, who played Mumtaz Mahal in this movie was considered as one of the two most beautiful actresses of pre-partition era, other being Naseem (Saira Bano Mom). Saira Bano's mom was given the title of 'Pari Chehra' (Fairy face) Naseem and Raagini as 'Aaho Chashm' Raagini. Two men committed suicide for her. One was M.D. Kunwar who played "Shahjehan" in this film. Kunwar was so enamoured of Raagini that he had requested Kardar for the role, to be close to Raagini. Unfortunately, Raagini did not respond to his romantic advances, and Kunwar sank himself in perpetual drunkenness, which led to his getting infected by tuberculosis and his death soon after that. Raagini migrated to Pakistan after partition and was seen in countless films. Like Meena Kumari and Nargis, Raagini was also the product of hindu-muslim marriage.

Azurie (dancer in this film) was the most popular dancer of pre-partition era before Cuckoo and Helen took over. Real name Anna Marie Gueizelor, Azurie was daughter of German doctor and Indian mother. Anna was encouraged to study ballet with a group of Russian emigrants, and to practice the piano. As a young girl, she became aware of Eastern dancing during a rare visit to the cinema, but her father did not allow her to practice classical dance. When Anna reached her teens, the family moved to Bombay. Her father became a member of the Three Arts Circle organized by Begum Atiya Rahman from her palatial home, Aiwan-e-Riffat. Atiya Begum was the answer to Anna's prayers. She arranged for Anna to study the arts of the subcontinent in her home. After her father's death, Anna stayed with Atiya Begum and later became known as Azuri. Azuri studied different schools of dance from renowned teachers and explored the rich field of Eastern music. She joined the Bombay film industry and was featured in numerous films. When her career was well established, she married a cultured Muslim gentleman who shared her interests.

Azurie migrated to Pakistan after partition worked in few Pakistani films, but soon abandoned them. Like her contemporary Khurshid (Tani of 'Tansen' fame), she had achieved a status of stardom in India which she was unable to maintain in Pakistan. In the last years of her life, she used to live in a sparsely furnished apartment. Her only valuable possession was a large album on her table. Sandwiched in between glossy enlargements of her dance poses was a stark photograph in which she stood in a plain white sari against the background of a cremation scene. There was a tear in her eye when she told the interviewer that she had been an 'acting star' as well. Azurie also died last year in Karachi.

Hello Ashish,
Long time back you made a query about Peace Kanwal. Here is a filmography of Peace Kanwal :-

Aarti (1962)
Barsaat Ki Raat (1960)
Maa Baap (1960)
Nai Maa (1960)
Khul Ja Sim Sim (1956)
Kismet (1956)
Barati (1954)
Dil-E-Nadan (1953)

Mostly B and C grade films. In A.R. Kardar's Barati, she acted with Pakistani hero Darpan Kumar, known for his dark blue eyes.

Be4 we move any further, have to clear one thing. Naseem Bano's mother was famous Delhi courtesan Shamshad Begum alias Chammiya. Reported to be stunningly beautiful woman during her youth (more beautiful than her daughter Naseem and granddaughter Saira Bano). She was over 100 years old when she died. Shamshad Begum alias Chammiya acted in 3 films - Hamlet (1935), Gazi Diler (1936) and Veer Kesari (1938). In Sohrab Modi's Hamlet, both mother-daughter Shamshad and Naseem acted together.

Almost all websites on the internet confuse Naseem Bano's mom Shamshad with playback singer Shamshad Begum. Before providing such wrong information to readers, they should do a little research on legendary artistes. It is an insult to both artistes whenever two artistes are mixed up with each other.
