QUOTE(maheshks @ Mar 19 2006, 06:24 AM) *

Here is a soulful one....listened to this song after so many years

GUZARI THI RAAT AADHI KHAMOSH THA JAMANA
JALTE HUYE DILON KA SUN LE JARA FASANA

SINGER : LATA MANGESHKAR
MOVIE : SURANG(1953)
LYRICS : SHEWAN RIZVI
MUSIC : PANDIT SHIVRAMKRISHNA
THE ACTRESS IS YOUNG SHASHIKALA AND THE HERO IS VINOD KUMAR

What a beautiful song. I had never heard it. Lata's voice is probably at the best
period of her life. The pitch of this song, the miThaas is exceptional.
And the other thing that I really liked was how well Shashikala tracks with Lata's
voice and her hands on the maTka. She keeps perfect time with the song with
her hands (more than can be said for the gazillion actors who waved their hands
over piano keys on screen). And her expressions seem to match up with the
changing pitch in Lata's voice.
Thank you for sharing this song maheshks. Dil khush ho gaya.

Here is a nice discussion about Surang soundtrack by Hrishi Dixit.

Song: chhalke na gham ke pyaale, piye jaa piye jaa
in aansuon ko piye jaa... piye jaa

Film: Surang (1953)
Singer: Lata Mangeshkar
Music: Shivram Krishna
Lyrics: Sheven Rizvi

This is a brisk, uplifting melody, etched in the same pattern of positive
effervescence as "aansuon ki chhaaon men bhi hans le...", and delivers a similar
message too. Beautiful vocal artistry in this song - the tune meanders in some
delicate sinusoids with lovely murkis around the curves. Gorgeous rendition from
Lata. There is a subtle, charming pause in the second line, between the "piye
jaa"s, which infuses a sort of urging tone, like "c'mon, piye jaa..."

The song starts off in a slow prelude set against a strumming sitar backdrop:
palkon hi had se baahar aansoo nikal na aaye
keh de musafiron se manzil pe thehar jaayen

I think SURANG is a V Shantaram film... don't recall who's in it (Sandhya), but
it does have a lovely set of songs. Two other Lata solos worth mentioning in
this movie are "gehri gehri nadiya men bahi chali jaaun re" and "guzri thi raat
aadhi...". A couple of songs by Manna Dey and a delightful Asha solo "mast
bahaar hai, pyaar hi pyaar hai" make up the soundtrack muster roll. The overall
music is very similar to another soundtrack from the same year - TEEN BATTI
CHAAR RAASTA, also a Shantaram film, and also composed by Shivram Krishna.

..Hrishi

He is absolutely right. It is a Shantaram film, but interestingly does not star
Shantaram himself or anybody married to/related to him smile1.gif

The heroines are Shashikala and Sheela Ramani with Ulhaas and Vinod Kumar.
I recall Ulhas's name but not his face. And I don't know who Vinod Kumar is.
So, mahesh or anybody else, do you have the other songs from this film?
THe description by Hrishi makes them seem worth having.

Ulhas is a very familar face. Acted as a character artiste in countless movies in 50s and 60s, after playing lead roles in 40s in several movies. He was one of the dacoits in Shantaram's classic, Do Ankhen Barah Haath. In this very thread, Mahesh Bhai had uploaded two video songs of Madhubala's first movie Basant, in which she plays the daughter of lead actors, Mumtaz Shanti and Ulhas. if you have downloaded, you can watch him on the screen in all the three scenes uploaded here, the third one being where he she rides delightfully on his back.

Yeah Thanx God! Mahesh (not Maheshks) conducted a poll on SKS yahoo on the most irritating heroines of Hindi Cinema and Sandhya (Shantaram's wife) won it by overwhelming majority followed by Priya Rajvansh. Jayshree too is equally irritating onscreen, evident by the song picturisations of Parchaaian especially "Apni Kaho kuch meri suno".

Quite true that both Jayshree and Sandhya had an exaggerated flavor to their acting, but wonder if that makes them so irritating. Especially as far as Sandhya is concerned her dance compensated for the flawed acting. I did like her in 'Do Ankhen Barah Haath' and 'Pinjra'. Her dances in Navrang, Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje were classics.

There were all sort of talks as to why Dev Anand was cast as hero instead
of Dilip Kumar. DA in fact suited much better than DK in this movie. When
it was released here, the distributors offered a prize for correct answer as
to Who is/was the Ziddi ?? I do not recall, however, what was the correct
answer.
