Ashish I donot recollect any other movie where she had played a significant role. One thing I know about Peace Kamal or Kanwal is that she was crowned as Miss India in 1953. I may be wrong but I think Peace Kanval came into the film world by winning a Kolynos-Kardar contest. She also appeared in Kardar's Barati. Urzung Saab, What could I gather about some of the girls (those who were crowned as Miss India in the initial years) is that "Initiated in 1947, the year India got its Independence, the first Miss India title was conferred upon actress Pramila based on all-India voting by fans, editors and prominent journalists from different magazines. Pramila was described as "all India's shapeliest heroine" by the Indian Film Journalists' Association, Mysore city, and she was presented the title by Morarji Desai. Nutan, a celebrated beauty of Indian cinema who had a meteoric rise as an actress, was crowned Miss India in 1952. Peace Kanwal, pageant winner in 1953, once a shy and self-conscious person, today holds solo painting exhibitions in art galleries at the Waldorf Astoria in New York and the Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai". Regarding Khandaan song....it is the file no.5 on cd 1 Inaam...Meri Ammi ka raaj bhala...is not available. The next song is a beautiful composition of Shyam Sunder CHORI CHORI AAG SI DIL MEIN LAGA KAR CHAL DIYE HUM TADPATE REH GAYE WOH MUSKURA KE CHAL DIYE SINGER SULOCHNA KADAM MOVIE DHOLAK (1951) LYRICS AZIZ KASHMIRI MUSIC SHYAM SUNDER THE SONG IS PICTURISED ON MEENA SHOREY (LARA LAPPA FAME) When you find peace within yourself, you become the kind of person who can live at peace with others

Talking about Meena Shorey (Lara Lappa girl)... who migrated to Pakistan in 1956. Here is a very rare, sweet and peppy song picturized on her from the Pakistani Film Aakhri Nishan (1958). It was one of her few hit movies in Pakistan.
Music is by Rehman Verma (it was his second film in Pakistan after Baaghi (1956)). He composed one Indian film in 1948 Heer Ranjha with Khaiyyam as Verma Ji. Other known faces seen in this song are Neelo (famous dancer who later became heroine), Sudhir (hero), and Nazar (comedian). [If you look at the song picturization, there is one MAJOR FLAW in the direction of this song... (Hint :- Look carefully as the song ends). Can someone point it out? ![]() I dont know who the singer is, but guessing by the voice it appears to be Nahid Niazi. Maybe Urzung Khan can confirm it? Rut hai suhani Gorie Kie Jawani Dag mag dag mag doley Movie :- Aakhri Nishan (1958) Singer :- Nahid Niazi? and Chorus Music :- Rehman Verma |

Here is another beautiful composition by Shyam Sunder (music directors khaiyyam and ravi rate him as one of the greatest music directors in hindi cinema). He was the man under whom Rafi Saab sang his first punjabi as well as hindi cinema songs(soniye hiriye in gul baloch and dil ho qaabu main in village girl).
A beautiful westernised type of song: CHHALAK RAHA HAI NIGAHHON SE PYAR THODA SA WOH KAR GAYE HAIN HAMEIN BEKRAAR THODA SA SINGER SULOCHNA KADAM MOVIE DHOLAK (1951) LYRICS AZIZ KASHMIRI MUSIC SHYAM SUNDER THE SONG IS PICTURISED ON MEENA SHOREY When you find peace within yourself, you become the kind of person who can live at peace with others

Talking about Meena Shorey (Lara Lappa girl)... who migrated to Pakistan in 1956. That was the most worst decision taken by her which spoiled her life. She died in abject poverty. Even for her burial charity money was used. When you find peace within yourself, you become the kind of person who can live at peace with others

Next time, I visit India, I will try to locate it and share it. Her autograph was very peculiar (funny). She wrote it with two o's, Meena shoorey. The o's had semi-circles inside that made them look like human eyes looking at you in a very humorous way. It was a joke inside of the signature. I can still feel her looking at me. Do you, by any chance, have a video Lara Lappa? I have the movie audio. Jay |

Hello Jaykoshal,
Here is an article on Meena Shoorey from my website. Meena Shorey was the silver screen temptress of the 40's and the 50's. She made her debut in Sikander (1942), the memorable Sohrab Modi production starring Prithvi Raj as the world conqueror. Meena starred as the sister of Ambhi, the rajah of Taxila. After her marriage with Roop K. Shorey of the Shorey Studios, Lahore, she migrated to Bombay when the partition riots made it difficult for them to stay in Lahore (The Shorey Studios was soon burnt down by a gang of self-righteous reformers). Eik Thi Ladki, made by her husband in 1949 in Bombay, dubbed her as the sensational Lara Lappa Girl (after one of the popular songs from that film). Just when the glamour of this achievement was beginning to decline the couple was called to Lahore by J.C. Anand. He had used an Indian soundtrack (Hemant Kumar's number Na Yeh chand ho ga) in his successful movie Sassi last year and now he wanted to improve the status of his plagiarism by imitating the concept of an entire film: Guru Datt-Madhubala hit Mr. & Mrs. 55. What came out was Miss 56. Although the film did average to good business, it proved to be the swan song of the Shoreys. Meena, the Lara Lappa Girl of the forties was pampered by all, in contrast with the treatment meted out to declining artistes by film-goers in Bombay. For her it was like rediscovering her youth. So when the time came to return to India, she decided to stay back, leaving heart-broken Roop to take yet another trip from Lahore empty-handed, within a span of ten years, first losing his means of livelihood and then his sweetheart. That was the separation of the Shoreys. As time was to reveal, it did no good to any of them. Apart from a few side roles in major films like Sarfarosh (1956), Bedari (1957), and Mauseeqar (1962) she was soon reduced to obscure films with titles that sounded like Jagga (1958), Bacha Jhamoura (1959), Behrupiya (1960)and Jamalo (1962) before her ultimate descent into negative old-age role of a `Madam' running a network of bonded prostitution in Khamosh Raho (1964). The final part of her life story is almost too painful to be real. While Roop K. Shorey died in 1973 in India, from a broken heart over the separation from his sweetheart, the former wife of the studio owner and once a bright star in the galaxy of Bollywood was reduced to extremely destitute living by the end of her life before her death in 1989. She was last seen in the television program Silver Jubilee in 1983 and then mentioned in one news item as having had stood up in a function begging for charity money to marry off her sister's daughters. Muhammad Ali, who had played a younger (and his first great) role against her in Khamosh Raho was reported to have given her moral support on that occasion. It is said that her burial was arranged with charity money. Attached image(s) ![]() |
