Here's a rare song I came across :
Chunak chunak, chunak chunak, tam thai thaiyya, tam thai thaiyya
Zindagani, rut suhani, pyar ki kahani
kya karega zindagi jo dil kahin machal gaya

from the film PANCHAYAT 1958 - with music of IQBAL QURESHI and lyrics of SHAKEEL NUMANI and starring Manoj Kumar, Raaj Kumar, Shyama, Nasir Hussain

sung by MOHD. RAFI and GEETA DUTT
on screen : Raaj Kumar and Shyama

nice lively tune !!

enjoy ! gift.gif

The title song from Panchayat 1958 is also a nice song by Rafi and chorus
Milke baitho, jodo bandhan - this comes when the titles are showing and another shorter version appears later in the movie

Here's a Rafi-Suman duet that I used to like very much in those days - from the film BEDAAG released in 1965

Beautiful music of ROSHAN - sounding a little Naushad-ish in parts - probably influenced by the lyrics of SHAKEEL BADAYUNI who was Naushad's steady partner( Roshan-Shakeel - quite a rare combination, i must say )

"Maine ai jaan-e-wafa tumse mohabbat ki hai
Tumne ek dard mujhe deke qayamat ki hai"

Enjoy ! gift.gif

My most favourite one - of the many songs which Rafi has sung for Johny Walker. Mohd. Rafi sings so well for Johny Walker that it is difficult to decide who is the better actor between the two - the one who acts on the screen or the one who acts through his voice !! It never ceases to amaze me that these two gentlemen - who have never touched liquor in their life - manage to produce such a convincing portrayal of a likeable, comic, drunkard on the screen !!!

Here's "Jangal mein mor nacha kisine na dekha" - this is a good quality version from the film soundtrack (DVD). It also has some initial dialogue of Johny Walker which builds up the mood of the song

Fabulous composition of Salil Chowdhury - year 1958

Request from Divyanjali :

Sanwaar de jo pyar se, bahaar ki bhi zindagi
O jaan-e-jan, o meherban,
tumhi to ho, tumhi to ho

by Mohd. Rafi from the film 'The adventures of Robin Hood and bandits' 1965. Music of G S Kohli. Song courtesy Unni.

Some comments about the music director :

The music director of this song (G S KOHLI ) used to assist a very popular music director (O P Nayyar) for many years. Then in 1963 he decided to fork out on his own - and produced some fabulous songs over the next few years - but for low budget movies. Most of the movies flopped and, as far as I know, only one of his songs managed to reach the top of the popularity charts ( Tumko piya dil diya - from Shikari ). Sadly, in 1966, he had to return to assist the same popular music director and vanish into obscurity once again. Some of his songs bear strong resemblance to the style of this popular music director. That's the sad story of this composer. Sometime last year i bought a book written about hindi film composers, singers , lyricists etc ..... and this man's name was not even mentioned !!!!! Such is the tragedy of the popularity game in films and music.

Enjoy listening !

Sri

Haal yeh kar diya zaalim tere tadpaane ne

Here's an old favourite from the film PASSPORT 1961

Saaz-e-dil chhed de by Rafi and Lata - music of Kalyanji Anandji
picturised on Pradeep Kumar and Madhubala

enjoy ! gift.gif

Sri

Some additional info : The movie credits usually list the names of the assistants to the film's music director. I always make it a point to note this. Sometimes, these assts, if they are capable composers, may have contributed much more than in helping make the background music or helping with the orchestration etc. In this movie, 2 big names are listed as the assistants to Kalyanji Anandji. The names listed in the credits are PYARE and LAXMI. This was the year 1961 - two years before Laxmikant Pyarelal made their debut with Parasmani in 1963.
