Shall upload the song clips from "JAAN-PEHCHAAN".

About the re-location of the Geeta Dutt forum:

Of late we've received requests for forums dedicated to Hemant Kumar and Manna Dey. It would be unreasonable not to oblige these requests, considering these are legendary artistes in their own right.

But due to space constraints on the Home Page, it was decided that:

1) We'll retain on the Home Page the oldest/original forums dedicated to singers, the ones members are most used to seeing there.

2) Create a new forum for Legendary Singers with sub-forums for the various other great singers whom we revere. It gave us the flexibility of creating a sub-forum for no less a legend than the immortal K. L. Saigal!

No disrespect was meant to Geeta-ji and no offence intended to her innumerable fans. But moving Geeta Dutt into the new forum was necessary to create space to feature other legends --- without making the Home Page look like a telephone directory!

You and Bappa-da and other members have made this a very active tribute. We'll continue to participate as best as we can to make it one of the most popular and informative in HF.

Thanks to all concerned for their contributions.

If you stop trying to make sense of it all, you'll be less confused. Reality is an illusion.

hi unniji,
i understand the constraints of the administration.but being a geeta fanatic i felt geeta dutt forum was gaining immense popularity because of direct exposure.although more people were actively participating in rafi, lata, kishore and asha forum;geeta forum's popularity was in no way less than noorjehan or mukesh forum since 21st april.
of course i am a big fan of shamshad, hemant, suraiya and all other newly introduced legends and eagerly await discussion on them.
maybe after a couple of months the adminstration can reconsider the decision if it percieves significant participation in the geeta forum comparable to other legends.

a million thanks for ''pardesi se lag gayi preet re''.it was my least favourite song from the movie;but after watching the picturisation,i am beginning to like it.

MAHESH JI,
I THINK I UNDERSTAND YOUR POSITION. AS A DIE HARD FAN OF GEETA DUTT, I COULD ONLY FIND LITTLE INFORMATION ABOUT HER AS WELL AS VERY LITTLE COLLECTION OF HER SONGS....PEOPLE SEEM TO LIKE HER BUT DID NOT KNOW OR CARE MUCH TO KEEP HER IN PROMINENCE. I REMEMBER THE FRUSTRATIONS I UNDERWENT WHEN I STARTED TO ACTIVELY PURSUE TO KNOW, COLLECT GEETA DUTT CLASSICS!
WHEREAS OTHER SINGERS LIKE LATA, ASHA, HEMANT,TALAT, RAFI, MUKESH, MANNA DEY ETC. ETC. WERE ALL EITHER ALIVE OR THERE WERE ALREADY TOO MANY OF THEIR SONGS IN THE MARKET, WHERE GEETA DUTT WAS ONLY A HANDFUL. I REMEMBER WHEN I USED TO ASK ABOUT GEETA DUTT RECORDS FROM HMV RECORD STORES IN CALCUTTA, THEY WOULD GIVE ME A LOOK LIKE I WAS CRAZY TO BE LOOKING FOR THEM....THEN AFTER A LOT OF COAXING, THEY WOULD FIND A RECORD UNDER PILES OF JUNK AND PULL IT OUT AND SAY, THIS IS ALL WE HAVE.....I DON'T HAVE TIME TO LOOK THROUGH.....ETC. ETC. SEVERAL TIMES I THOUGHT OF GOING AND ASKING HEMANTA MUKHERJEE ABOUT HER, (OR PRATIMA BANERJEE, WHO WAS ALSO A FAMILY FRIEND, BUT SHE WAS MENTALLY UNSTABLE AT THAT TIME) BUT COULD NOT SUMMON THE COURAGE AS MY MOTHER ALSO POINTED OUT THAT YOU ARE GOING TO INSULT HIM BY ASKING ABOUT ANOTHER ARTISTE OR SHOW YOUR CRAZINESS TOO MUCH....YOU WILL EMBARRASS ME AND MY FRIEND, KRISHNA (HEMANT KUMAR'S NEICE)...SO THAT NEVER WORKED OUT!! THEN I STARTED STEALING TWO OR THREE CASSETTES I WOULD FIND IN MY NEIGHBOR'S, MOTHER'S FRIENDS PLACE. I USED TO FEEL ANGRY AT LATA AND ASHA, WHY DON'T THEY EVER MENTION ABOUT GEETA DUTT, WHO WAS THEIR EQUAL. HOW COULD THEY LET HER JUST WITHER AWAY LIKE THAT? ETC. ETC.

SIMILAR SITUATION WAS OF COLLECTING GURU DUTT ARTICLES.....NO ONE SEEMED TO CARE OR KNOW. I WAS DEEMED AS CRAZY FOR EVEN LIKING GURU DUTT THEMES!! I ALSO STARTED STEALING PAGES FROM MAGAZINES FROM MY SCHOOL LIBRARY WHERE GURU DUTT WOULD BE MENTIONED, HIDE THEM IN MY PANTS AND TRY TO AVOID BEING CHECKED OUT BY THE LIBRARIAN!!! DOES THAT SOUND CRAZY!! THAT WAS MY PASSION FOR THE DUTT COUPLE WHICH HAS ONLY INCREASED AS I HAVE GROWN OLDER AND MOVED AWAY!

SO NATURALLY BEING A GEETA DUTT FAN WAS HARD AND IT SEEMED TO BE EVER ELUSIVE!!

RIGHT MAHESH BHAISAAB?

Post #11 in this thread was a meagre prelude to this: The Real Thing!

The picturization of this song ranks among the great classics of Hindi film sequences. The innovative direction of Guru Dutt, the brilliant visual composition with its play upon light and dark shot in black and white, the superb camera-work, the novel set with it's now-legendary stationary bullock-cart, the beam of light splashed across the screen as the lovers remain still as imagined images of their desires glide across --- and in the background, the voice of Geeta-ji in what I regard and respect as her most 'haunting' song -- even more evocative in my esteem than another of her timeless classics, "Kahin Door Se Aawaz De, Chaley Aao" from "Sahib, Biwi Aur Ghulam".

I could write reams about this song, its picturization --- with a plethora of superlatives. Instead, I'd rather you watch and listen.

To savour the full flavour of this clip, I'd suggest you watch it at night with the lights off, and imagine yourself in a cinema-hall of old. Fortunately I've a black background on my desktop screen which enhances the visuals.

And the video clip includes the atmospheric music missing in the audio track.

"Kachha Dhaaga" is honoured to offer this upload:

Unni-ji,
In fact it is an honour to be associated with selfless people like you.
I was too young to see it when it was released, but this song has always given me goosebumps - both the audio and video versions.
Probably one of the greatest movie scenes ever, of what is in my opinion THE greatest Hindi film song of all time.
Perhaps a classic such as this should deserve a higher-fidelity bitrate.
Thanks again

This ia a timeless movie. I watch it as often as possible!! In fact when one learns that there was no situation in the script for this scene. S.D. Burman composed the tune (as he always did) and Guru Dutt liked it a lot. Then Kaifi Azmi was asked by him to write the lyrics. No matter how many times he wrote, no one (Guru Dutt, S.D Burman or Azmi) was satisfied. At last Guru Dutt wanted to give up and told S.D. that he would use it in a later film. Kaifi Azmi did not want to give up. He asked for a last chance and composed "WAQT NE KIYA KEYA HASSEN SITAM....." Rest is history.

In fact the four movies of guru Dutt : Mr. & Mrs. '55, Pyaasa, Kaagaz Ke Phool and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam are all masterpieces one should watch over and over and try to read between the lines!! I cannot understand why a film like Kaagaz Ke Phool failed in 1959 in India? Were our ancestors STUPID? SHALLOW? WHAT WAS THE PROBLEM? Any comments????????

Bappa-da,
I guess the movie was simply far ahead of its times.
Apart from that, even Guru Dutt is said to have acknowldged that the movie was not consistently top class - absolutely brilliant in parts but somwhat ordinary/contrived in other parts.
Plus of course, the untimely deaths of both Guru and Geeta Dutt have lent a mystique to this movie in particular which it didn't have when it was released.

unniji,
thanks a ton for uploading the video of the greatest song of geeta dutt and one of the best songs of world cinema.the song is also unique that a large number of celebrities like amitabh bacchan, shabana azmi, rekha etc have again and again mentioned this song as their ultimate favourite.
recently amitabh on ''coffee with karan'' picked this song as the song which symbolised his life.

Thanks to 50Some1 ji as well as Mahesh ji. I missed that song as it was not u/l in the Geeta Forum!!!:(

Anyway, I just feel that this HF community is another community for me as I cannot find people to discuss these things which are indeed a part of me.

As for films, I wanted to say Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam is no less than Pyaasa or Kaagaz Ke Phool. In fact let me say this as a Bengali as well as an Indian:-
"Usually movies which have been refilmed in Hindi from the Bengali versions are slightly lesser in appeal to ME (again, personal opinion!!!). The example given are:-
Khamoshi (Waheeda, Rajesh Khanna & Nazir Hussein) as compared to Dweep Jwele Jai (Suchitra Sen, Basanta Chowdhury & Pahari Sanyal). In fact moved by the bengali film, waheeda proposed to Asit Sen that she wanted to make the Hindi version and act in the role of Suchitra Sen. Another example is MAMTA, no doubt this was a good movie but the Bengali version "UTTAR FALGUNI" was simply marvellous. In fact this is a movie that Suchitra herself acted in the main roles (mother & daughter) in both languages, but one can very simply make out the difference in presentation and dialogues and its deliveries!!!.

But I would say two movies so far that I have seen, Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam by Guru Dutt and Devdas by Bimal Roy (casting Dilip Kumar, suchitra Sen and Vyjyanthimala) are no doubt as a whole better than the Bengali versions. The passion, the feelings etc. were much well portrayed in the hindi movies. Meena kumari's abilities as an actress are still unparallelled!!! and the genius of Guru Dutt and the dedication and vocation of Guru Dutt team (Abrar Alvi, V.K. Murthy, Rehman etc. etc.)

Just thought I would share these facts.

Namashkar
