Passing boatman (in the rarely heard voice of Ravi, the music director) begins the song and then hands over to Asha (Shakeela acting on screen). I had a tough time eliminating a loud scream by Shakeela just at the end of the song in the film -on seeing the cops coming to grab Pradeep Kumar, the hero!!

Though the boatman part is somewhat disconnected .. it does provide a peaceful, tranquil environment for the song to begin ( boatman singing by the waterfront etc. while the hero and heroine are enjoying each other's company) The song itself always struck me as a smooth, slow and relaxed kind of song

btw, i'm quite fine with just plain 'sri'- sri-ji makes me sound like a bollywood music director - which i may well have tried to become ... if times and the ishtyle of music had not changed so dramatically for the worse !! instead i ended up with a reasonably succesful - but stale, commonplace corporate career !!

yes, raat chup hai is a song that keeps growing on you .. and always very pleasant

no ... just natural inclination and musical talent !!
learnt singing, keyboard, tabla etc. on my own from various sources - starting from my mom. When one really wants to learn one does not need to be taught formally. Of course, formal training helps. Then, there were my great singing gurus - Rafi, Lata, Kishore, Asha, Talat, Mukesh and Hemant Kumar etc. etc. .. and my music composition gurus like Naushad, O P Nayyar, Madan Mohan, Roshan and Salil Chowdhury etc. etc. who used to train me every day for several hours via the remote learning program i had enrolled in ( otherwise known, in those days, as the radio !!)
