Similar to the topic that I had started in SKS, I am starting a thread here in the Tamil
forum where I will upload all the songs from a film. I recently downloaded software to rip songs from DVD and so I have downloaded the songs from a few nice films. I have no geetkosh for Tamil cinema. SO information will be more spotty for these films. If I watch the film, I will provide some information about that as well. |

I am starting the series with songs from the film "Pudhiya paravai" (1964).
The film starred Sivaji Ganeshan with Saroja Devi and Sowcar Janaki. It was a thriller/mystery loosely based on the James Hadley Chase novel "To chase a crooked shadow". The film itself is not watchable (IMO) due to the gross over-acting by the lead actors, but it was quite a hit in its time. So who am I to judge. The highlight of the film however was the exceptional music composed by Vishwanathan-Ramamurthy. They created magic when they composed together. While M S Vishwanathan did go on to be very very successful on his own for almost 20 years, I felt that the music always lacked that special touch that was their when the composed as a team. T K Ramamurthy never quite managed to make it solo. The songs from this film come from the DVD, but they still needed to be cleaned up. While I would normally start with the title music of the film, I am going to do it a bit differently. I will start this series with what is among my top 20 favorite compositions in Tamil film music. There are 2 versions of the song, both solos by P Susheela. The first is a faster version sung with a huge band while the second version is slower and softer and with minimal orchestration. Susheela is great in the first one, but just superb in the second. Songs 1 and 2: Unnai onDru keTpen unmai solla venDum Singer: P Susheela Both versions are included in this upload. |

Song 3: Title music
I find this music to be kind of loud and all over the place. The scene however is that of a woman who is being chased by somebody in a car while she is running along some railroad tracks. There is a train approaching as well. It ends with her dying. One cannot see anybody's face during this sequence since it is all in silhouette. |

The next song was the most popular one in this film. It is again in 2 parts and
both parts are solos. The first is the happy version that is picturized on Sowcar Janaki in a nightclub, the first time that Sivaji Ganeshan sees her. The second version is sung by the wife who has allegedly returned from the dead. It begins with an excellent piano piece. The orchestration of the second version is excellent. Songs 4 and 5: Paartha nyaabagam illaiyo Singer: P Susheela Both parts are included in this upload. |

Song 6: ChiTTukuruvi muthham koDuthhu
Singer: P Susheela Despite the film having 2 heroines (both attached to the same hero), there are no duets at all. All the songs are solos. Here is another of those solos. |

Now let us move to the 2 male solos in the film.
Both tunes are nice. But the funniest part of this song for me are the inaptness of they lyrics. The words say "Undhan chinna iDai vaLaindhaaDum" and it is picturized on a rather ample Saroja Devi sacheting in front of a very very ample Sivaji. Then again, it was a different time, long before the current days of excellent figures. Oh, I should not forget to mention this really really awful muslin-material shirt that Sivaji is wearing in this scene. Sivaji in semi-see-through clothing. As I said, it was a different time Song 7: Aaha mella naDa mella naDa meni yennaagum Singer: TMS |

The last song from this film was also quite popular. It is not among
my favorites, but the composition has grown on me over time. Song 8: Yenge nimmadhi Singer: TMS |

Very nice concept indeed, sangeetbhaktji !!
I fully agree with your view on Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy vs M.S.Viswanathan. I felt that the most brilliant aspect of the combo's music was the brilliant orchestration which was missing when MSV went solo. Listen to such songs as "Yen vaazvil pudhu paadhai kanden" and "Mayangugiraal oru maadhu" - the superb usage of the violins, flutes and sitar is what makes these songs so amazing to hear, in addition to the composition and the singers. As to "Pudhiya paravai", the film came at aroun 1964-5 when Sivaji was living on days as a Star than an Actor. I think Sivaji during the 1952-3 to 1961-2 period was the greatest actor India saw. Unfortunately, after this, I think he saw himself too much of a star. |

Very nice concept indeed, sangeetbhaktji !! Please please please drop the "ji". Totally unnecessary. QUOTE I fully agree with your view on Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy vs M.S.Viswanathan. There was a softness to the compositions which I always assumed to be the TKR influence. MSV had a very strong sense of rhythm/percussion and certainly composed some great tunes. But if I compare the duo v/s the solo compositions, there is a delicacy to the compositions. P Susheela never sang better than when she sang for them. QUOTE As to "Pudhiya paravai", the film came at aroun 1964-5 when Sivaji was living on days as a Star than an Actor. I think Sivaji during the 1952-3 to 1961-2 period was the greatest actor India saw. Unfortunately, after this, I think he saw himself too much of a star. I was never in the camp that thought Sivaji was a good actor. His style was always to over-emote. And that just does not work for me. One of my favorite actors/actresses of the time was Savitri. Despite all the melodrama in the films of the period, she generally managed to underplay her roles. And the other actor who always amazed me by his versatality was Nagesh. But I am digressing into areas that are not relevant to this thread. So I will stop. |
