Rom, the answer is B. Mahatma Gandhi was nominated 5 times 1937, 1938, 1939, 1947 and 1948. Unfortunately for some controversial reasons he was never given the award. In fact it is popularly believed that if he Gandhiji had been alive in 1948, he would have been conferred the award. Peace prize for 1948 was cancelled and Nobel committee came out with a statement that "There is no suitable living person for this year's award"!!!

While there were people who identified Mahatma Gandhi as an extra-ordinary soul, there were others who didn't wanted to invite the wrath of British by giving the award to a person who was the leader of campaign against their rule.

From www.nobelprize.org, following are the winners of nobel peace prize in these years:

1937: Lord Edgar Algernon Robert Gascoyne Cecil
1938: Nansen International Office for Refugees
1939: None
1947: Friends Service Council (The Quakers) and American Friends Service Committee (The Quakers)
1948: None

Answer's actually seven, so D is correct.

These are considered the seven Delhi... founded in different eras, on different locations in the current Delhi region... they're all quite mixed up now, of course.

Quila Rai Pithora
Mehrauli
Siri
Tughlakabad
Firozabad
Shergarh
Shahjehabanad

Yes, all these were founded by different rulers over time... there should be more... like the ancient Delhi... Indraprastha... and perhaps even New Delhi founded by the goraas... But sab log saat hi kehte hein.
And P-ji ne already has started clamouring for another cheque... abhi pata nahin jawab sahi hei yaa galat!

No no buddy, you keep the cheque... you being a Mumbaikar, and one who seems to keep his eyes and ears open, you'd have known of DNA in any case. smile1.gif
How's the paper doing, BTW? Nothing special in it, from what I've seen... is in the ToI/Mid Day mode.

Posted by: Mandrake Aug 19 2005, 07:40 PM

Pretty average. In fact, the Mid-Day guys directed them to me. (They are good friends of each other).

But the fact is rather simple: they all give the same news. How much variations can they bring to go one up? And with Mid-Day innovating endlessly, there's a loyal reader base that refuses to go elsewhere.

Mumbai Mirror came and is almost gone. Hindustan Times came, and is kinda going. Afternoon is just about surviving.

It's a jungle out there. wink2.gif

Posted by: rom Aug 19 2005, 07:57 PM

You're right... tis the same news they've got to give... But I like the way Indian Express is going... still seems to be a newspaper, rather than a gossip rag.
Yes, Mirror I believe is in trouble... HT too?
Mumbai's indeed a jungle... No wonder everybody was chary about venturing into the ToI and Mid Day territory.
DNA, though, is thinking real big... let's how the story pans out.

Oops ! You both are right that k2 is higher than Kanchenjunga. But guys, k2 is not in India. It lies on the Pak-China border.

So the correct answer is Kanchenjunga.

Whom are you referring to? wink2.gif tongue.gif. I guess to both of us. In case of 50 overs it is Sunil Joshi, as rom said. But I think economy is considered as runs given per over. So in that case it is Bedi smile1.gif

Cheers,

Posted by: gkshyam Aug 23 2005, 07:22 PM

Perfect Rom & Vivek!!! thumbs-up.gif (Yes, I was referring to both Viveks then... tongue.gif) I still vividly recall watching that match.....and Joshi was bowling like..... man....can't use words here......the SA batsmen (SA was a much much better...and one of the top teams then....if you remember)......they seemed to have no clue on how to face his bowling!!!! tongue.gif laugh.gif He returned with figures of 10-6-6-5 (10 overs, 6 maidens, 6 runs & 5 wickets.....) If only he had taken one more wicket....he'ld have held the record of the best ever bowling figures by an Indian in ODI's .....whatever.....it was still one of the best bowling spells I got to witness.... smile1.gif

Yes Vivek (PM tongue.gif) Bedi holds it for overall.....that's why I re-phrased my question to 50-overs ODI..... wink2.gif

Posted by: gkshyam Aug 23 2005, 07:27 PM

Next, another interesting one.......

Which Indian bowler holds the record of being the ONLY Indian bowler to have taken a wicket off his very first bowl in ODI Cricket???

To be honest.......I think....I'll change the rule for maybe only THIS Question a bit... (what with Mandrake already giving the green-signal to do so.... wink2.gif No offence Rom and others... wink2.gif)

I think there shoudn't be any clues given for this question.....but if anyone here still insist, I can come up with the choices...... But would be great to see someone answer this one without any clues.... wink2.gif (Koi plss mujhe aakar peeto mat!!! blink.gif)

Yes, very interesting question indeed!! I think Mohanty and Rohan Gavaskar both got a wicket in the first over that they bowled for India, but not the first ball! There may be more who took wicket in their first over while playing for India in ODIs but I just remember the above two.

Absolutely right Pranav Ji!!!!! thumbs-up.gif Yes, here too only those two names are coming to my mind....(the ones having taken a wicket in their very first over).....but the wicket off the very first ball...is sure some rare feat.... smile1.gif

Guys, since this d*%&ned google answers practically everything, I'm trying to ask a question that might be a bit hat-ke...

Several years ago, a PG Wodehouse book was adapted as a TV serial on Doordarshan... some of you might have have caught it, so would you remember which Wodehouse book was adapted for that one?

1: The Girl in Blue
2: Leave it to Psmith
3: Pigs Have Wings
4: Very Good, Jeeves

Not sure if there'd be an answer to this one... sad1.gif

Lost the contact with doordarshan few years ago. I haven't watched it for many years now except the News. But I remember the days when we used to watch doordarshan, and serials would be much more realistic and interesting and the now-a-day masala.

when was this serial released on DD BTW?

Posted by: pranavjh Aug 30 2005, 03:26 AM

...and you thought I couldn't google this?????? smile1.gif

http://wodehouse.ru/gu200702.htm

...In 1988, the state-run television network Doordarshan broadcast a 10-part Hindi adaptation of his 1923 classic Leave it to Psmith, with the Shropshire castle of the Earl of Emsworth becoming the Rajasthani palace of an indolent Maharaja. (The series was a disaster: Wodehousean purists were appalled by the changes, and the TV audience discovered that English humour does not translate too well into Hindi.)...

Spot On!!! It was Charles Babbage, who first presented the idea of automatic mechanical computers. Although he was never able to make one due to limited resources. But his design was used much later in 20th century to make world's first mechanical computer.

A glow in a planet's ionosphere caused by the interaction between the planet's magnetic field and charged particles from the sun is known as what?

A-Aurora
B-Sun Spot
C-Red Gaint
D-Nebula

Posted by: pranavjh Sep 3 2005, 12:57 PM

I would guess Aurora - by eliminating possibilities

Sun spots I think are ON sun not on planets
Red Giant is type of star I think
Nebula is also not right, me thinks

So that leaves Aurora

Pranav

Posted by: Mandrake Sep 3 2005, 01:09 PM

Ok Aurora Borealis and Aurora Australis - what's the difference? Meaning, where do they occur?

Posted by: visuja Sep 3 2005, 01:19 PM

Aurora Borealis - in the northern hemisphere ... easily visible in Scandinaviam countries, northern parts of Greenland, Canada and Siberia.

Aurora Australis --- name says it all !! Southern hemisphere ... named so because Australia is the only large landmass in parts of the southern hemisphere where the auroras could be widely seen.

As for difference: i think no difference at all ! Just different names...

I have aquery though : does the auroras occur all round the year or are there seasons ? I mean.. apart from sunspot seasons !! wink2.gif

Posted by: Mandrake Sep 3 2005, 01:49 PM

Oye Vivekkkk!!! Kahis mujhe idhar 'google' ki boo toh nahi aa rahi?? wink2.gif

Anyways, aurorae occur due to the geomagnetic storms. These are caused by the solar eruptions (which keep happening alllll the time). However, only those eruptions that are on the earth-side cause these storms.
The aurorae typically happen at higher altitudes, but have also been seen at lower altitudes over Northern Africa.
At upper altitudes, they are observed in all colours, but at lower altitudes, they are principally red in colour.
Would have loved to ask you 'why red'?. But I guess you are smart enough to think VIBGYOR and tell me that red is at the end of the spectrum wink2.gif

Just for your info, earthlings don't particularly welcome these things, as they can play havoc with electromagnetic systems, power-grids, air-traffic control systems, instrumentation systems on planes....

Posted by: visuja Sep 3 2005, 03:19 PM

Mandrake !! ...getting back at me is it ! cry.gif Itna astronomy knowledge / interest hai mujhmein sad1.gif

You have typed 'altitudes' at all three places !! .. did u really mean 'altitudes' or was it 'latitudes' !?? I tht they were visible only near the poles .... I forget the reason though ... magnetic field being rarest there and so easy to enter the earth's atmosphere..or soemthing like that... unsure.gif

And auroras visible over Northern Africa !! Thats really news ! Apna magnetic field wakaai mein palat raha hai kya ki itne low latitude pe field is weak !! blab.gif ... had watched a few doomsday type programs on discovery on magnetic pole reversals ! tongue.gif

Aur aapki spectrum waali baat mere palle nahin padi ! .... me very poor at understanding anything thats got to do with spectrum sad1.gif ....chaahe spectral shifts ho, ya other electromagnetic spectral phenomena ho ....ya phir audio spectrum hi kyun na ho !!.... (samajhta to shaayad suron ko pakad paata sad1.gif)

Posted by: Mandrake Sep 3 2005, 04:48 PM

Vivek-ji, aapne ttheek kaha!! The altitude should be read as 'latitude' thumbs-up.gif

Charged particles enter the earth's atmosphere where the magnetosphere shield is at it's weakest. That's typically over the poles. However, if one follows the lines of the magnetic fields, there are other weak spots too.

And in case you weren't aware, the north and south poles (magnetic - I mean) have been flipping over quite a few times in the past.

Posted by: NATURE Sep 3 2005, 06:04 PM

Ofcourse "CHARLES BABBAGE" ... here is a short note about him.

" Charles Babbage Born December 26, 1791 in Teignmouth, Devonshire UK, Died 1871, London;
Known to some as the "Father of Computing" for his contributions to the basic design of the
computer through his Analytical machine. His previous Difference Engine was a special purpose
device intended for the production of tables. While he did produce prototypes of portions of the
Difference Engine, it was left to Georg and Edvard Schuetz to construct the first working devices to
the same design which were successful in limited applications. "

****************************
Dear J Bakshi Ji , I don't know much about the statement "191st Country is the youngest" . . .
But I am quite sure about the number 191. Total 191 countries are the members of U.N. , but
"Vatican City" is not a memeber of U.N. ... Well, I must have to count again and rewrite.

ps In Australia we had our first ever millionaire winner in " Who wants to be a Millionaire" contest this week.

Here's an extract from a news item :

The Times October 18, 2005

Which country was last to win a million?

SIX years and more than 600 contestants after it began, the Australian version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire? finally has a millionaire winner of its own.

Rob Fulton, a university dropout who had just A$2 left in his bank account, became the first Australian participant to answer all 15 questions and clinch the ultimate prize of A$1 million.

Australia was the only one of the 106 nations which show the programme yet to produce a top prize winner. Mr Fulton, a 36-year-old graphic designer from Sydney, won the television quiz thanks to an extensive knowledge of popular 1960s television shows.

He correctly identified the television programme that was shown first from a choice of Bewitched, Get Smart, Hogan"s Heroes and I Dream of Jeannie. The answer was Bewitched in 1964, a year earlier than the other programmes.

Since Who Wants to be a Millionaire? hit Australian screens in 1999, it has handed out A$25.5 million in prize money, but had failed to produce a top prize winner. Mr Fulton, nicknamed Coach after the rugby league player Bob Fulton, was the first actually to attempt the final question after nine previous contestants played the safer option and walked away with A$500,000.

Mr Fulton said: I"ve always wanted to lock in an answer for the million dollars. Either way I would make game show history as the biggest loser or the biggest winner, life's too short and I wouldn't want to die wondering.

Of his final question, Mr Fulton said: I think I owe that to my Mum for actually putting me in front of the telly as a young kid.

Posted by: Nimii Oct 19 2005, 10:47 AM

Bhirgu ji you owe me 28 lakhs over that scam that happened during your ** days laugh.gif
