by Swami Chaitanya Keerti (innervoice Hindustan Times)

OF ALL the arts, dance happens to be the most perishable art -- it lives with the dancer and it dies with the dancer. One moment it is there when the dancer is performing and the next moment it is not there when the dancer stops. And the dance becomes a meditation, when the dancer disappears into dance and only the dance remains. This leads to a profound experience of Advaita, a state consciousness of non-duality. Then a single moment of dance becomes eternity.

Entering this realm of consciousness one realises immortality -- and that too in a single moment. This is why dance is a very special method of meditation. Most mystics have attained higher state of consciousness, or first they attained higher consciousness and then they expressed it in their dance. Shiva, Meera, Kabir, Chaitanya and so many Baul and Sufi mystics are such glorious examples. When they danced, every particle in their being danced. The whole universe was danced with them.

To live a life free from all kinds of stress and depression, the modern man must find some time to dance. It is not only healthy for the body but spiritual too. If you find it difficult to sit in the Vipassana type of meditation, the easi est method of meditation is to dance and let the body fall into relaxation after the dance. This will be a very natural meditation. However, one thing to remember: Be total in your dance -- and a total relaxation will follow.

Osho defines it: In a total dance, the dancer disappears, dissolves; only the dancing remains. When there is only dancing and no dancer, this is the ultimate of meditation -the taste of nectar, bliss, God, truth, ecstasy, freedom, freedom from the ego, freedom from the doer. And when there is no ego, no doer, and the dance is going on and there is no dancer, a great witnessing arises, a great awareness like a cloud of light surrounding you.
