Today is Sahir Ludhianvi's 28th death anniversary. Sahir once said, "Kal Aur Aayenge Naghmon Ki Khilti Kaliyaan Chun-ne Waale, Mujhse Behtar Kehne Waale, Tumse Behtar Sun-ne Waale", but how do we tell Sahir sahab that there hasn't been anyone who has proved to be a better poet than him. Talk about better, there isn't even anyone who has come close to Sahir Ludhianvi after him!
I wish he hadn't left us all so early. His presence and his thoughts would have made the Hindi Music World a better one. I pay tribute to this great poet! Itni Jaldi Bhi Kya Thi Sahir Tum Ko Jaane Ki Kuchh Aur Talkhiyaan Dekh Lete Zamaane Ki______Anupama I'm posting, along with his pictures, some Nazmz that Sahir Ludhianvi's friends wrote after his demise. Anupama..Thanks a lot for the link. Amazing..to know that you hailed from the same Alma mater.
Though a bit irrelevant, I would like to mention about a Lyricist from my native language..Aathreya ( pen name, just like Sahir ) who has written some of the finest songs about love, languish and longing. He too had an unfulfilled love affair and could never recover from it. Incidentally he is also known to enjoy drink..and often used to write his songs in inebriated condition. What is surprising is in some songs, what Sahir wrote used to reflect in Aathreya's lyrics !! My altime favourites should be from the film ' Shagun ' Tum chale jaaoge parchhaiyan reh jayegi.. Kuch na kuch husn ki..raanayiyaan reh jayegi.. None could it more justice than Rafi Sahab ...Every word of Sahir reaches us through His magnificent voice...Heaven...Heaven.. A link for the documentary on Sahir...on youtube. http://in.youtube.com/watch?v=J41cAWaXaBY This post has been edited by simplefable: Oct 27 2008, 07:18 AM After silence that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.

A link for the documentary on Sahir...on youtube. http://in.youtube.com/watch?v=J41cAWaXaBY Venkat, I've never heard of this poet Aathreya. Please post his one or two poems if possible and available with you. Talking about similarities or reflection, we can see that Faiz Ahmed Faiz and Sahir are very similar in their approach to writing. People say that there is a reflection of Faiz in Sahir's poetry. They both were from the same era. I haven't read too much about Faiz because I find his Urdu difficult. I even bought a book (Urdu-to-English translation by Khwaja Tariq Mahmood) to have a better understanding of his poems. Sahir and Faiz both have written a lot on social realism. Take for instance these two songs. You can find similarities between Faiz & Sahir's poetry. Zindagi Sirf Mohabbat Nahin Kuchh Aur Bhi Hai Zulf-o-Rukhsaar Ki Jannat Nahin, Kuchh Aur Bhi Hai Bhookh Aur Pyaas Ki Maari Hui Iss Duniya Mein Ishq Hi Ek Haqeeqat Nahin, Kuchh Aur Bhi Hai Tum Agar Aankh Churaao Toh Yeh Haq Hai Tumko Maine Tumse Hi Nahin, Sabse Mohabbat Ki Hai! (Tum Mujhe Bhool Bhi Jaao - Didi 1959, N.Dutta)__________Sahir Ludhianvi _________________________________________________________________ Mujhse Pehli Si Mohabbat Mere Mehboob Na Maang Maine Samjha Tha Ke Tu Hai Toh Darkhshan Hai Hyaat Tera Gham Hai Toh Gham-e-Dehar Ka Jhagdha Kya Hai Teri Surat Se Hai Aalam Mein Bhaaron Ko Sabaat Teri Aankhon Ke Siwa Duniya Mein Rakha Kya Hai Tu Jo Mil Jaaye Toh Taqdeer Nighoohn Ho Jaaye Yoon Na Tha Maine Faqat Chaha Tha Ke Yoon Ho Jaaye Aur Bhi Dukh Hain Zamaane Mein Mohabbat Ke Siwa Rahatein Aur Bhi Hain Vasl Ki Raahat Ke Siwa Anginat Sadiyon Ke Tareek Bahimana Tilisam Resham-o-Atlas-o-Kamkhwaab Mein Bunwaaye Hue Jaan-Ba-Jaan Bikte Hue Koocha-o-Bazaar Mein Jism Khaak Mein Lithde Hue Khoon Mein Nehlaaye Hue Laut Jaati Hai Idhar Ko Bhi Nazar Magar Kya Kijiye Ab Bhi Dilkash Hai Tera Husn Magar Kya Kijiye Aur Bhi Dukh Hain Zamaane Mein Mohabbat Ke Siwa Rahatein Aur Bhi Hain Vasl Ki Rahat Ke Siwa_________Faiz Ahmed Faiz Ask me not, O my beloved, the likes of first love I meditated and predicted my existence with you Tied with your lot, I thought, trails of subsistence to be few Your countenance gives permanence to the world of efflorescence In the world, not to accept, expect your lotus and hue If you were around, the fate itself I could surround It wasn't so, I willed it so, my wish was to confound There are woes in the world, other than the world of wooing There are joys in the world, other than love's pursuing Countless eons span and spawn myriad malevolent superstitions Clothes in brocade raiment, fibre and silken apparel In labyrinthine bazaar and alleys, bodies traded and paraded Soiled in dirt, bathed in blood, to dispel and repel The eyes get diverted to them, one cannot help eyeing Though still your beauty is eyeful, in vain it is viewing There are woes in the world, other than the world of wooing There are joys in the world, other than love's pursuing Ask me not, O my beloved, the likes of first love!____________Translated by Khwaja Tariq Mahmood Gopal Das Neeraj has written same kind of song too - Aaj Ki Raat Badi Shokh (duet) - how a romantic song turns into a bitter reality of life when Rafi sahab takes over. A lovely duet! Many thanks for the link of Sahir's documentary film. I watched it a few months ago on youtube. I would like to point out one small mistake - the song (Ek Jhooth Hai Jiska from Jaadu) playing in the background is of Shakeel Badayuni, not Sahir Ludhianvi! The song that you've mentioned (Tum Chali Jaaogi, Parchhaiyan Reh Jaayengi) is one of my favorites too. There is another song that I like from the same flick - Yeh Raat Bahut Rangeen Sahi! Together Rafi sahab & Sahir Sahab created magic! |
