Shammi Kappor has been in the movie industry for a very very long time. He first appeared in 1953 in "Thokar" when he was 22. Since then he acted in over 130 movies. Though he struggled initially as an actor, after marrying another actress (Geetabali), his life changed forever under her able guidance. From a commercial also ran to he became a sought after atcor.

I am starting this new series on Shammi. I have many of his movies in CDs. I am missing some of them from his early years, and may be one or two from the later years. I would like to share these songs with you in coming months and invite the members to share any missing songs to complete the albums.

To start with here is the part 1 of his filmography ...

Jeevan Jyoti (1953)

Shammi made his movie acting debut with another movie made in 1953 called "Thokar". But this movie also was made in the same year. It has music by Burmanda. It was directed by Mahesh Kaul, who was renowned as a brilliant director. The leading lady for this movie was Chand Usmani who was runnerup in a talent and beauty contest (winner was Peace Kanwal). Chand Usmani also is a sister of the great actress Meena Kumari. Pairing with new leading ladies started for Shammi right from the beginning.

Another feature is that Shammi sang a song (a duet) in this movie. Burmanda had Shammi's older brother, the famous Raj Kapoor sing also in "Dil Ki Rani (1947)". I don't know how many other movies of Shammi Burmanda composed music for. Probably not too many.

There are supposed to be 13 songs in this movie. I am able to upload only two of them. Please share with us if you have any missing ones. The missing songs are shown in red italics in the table below.

Now for details of the songs ...

Khoj (1953)

I don't have many details of this movie. I am not even sure who the leading lady was. I am uploading only one song. This is a great one by Rafi Saab. I know only of another song that I have included in the table below in red italics.

The music was composed by Nisar Bazmi. Not a household name here. But he was in Pakistan. He composed music apparently close to 40 in India before migrating to Pakistan in 1962. 14 of his movies were released after his migration.

He enjoyed a brilliant career with many successes, awards, recognition, and adulation in Pakistan. I am including one of his recent photographs below. He passed away last year.

Incidentally, Laxmikant-Pyarelal were asistants to Bazmi Saab. He introduced Anand Bakshi as a lyricist for one of his movies called "Bhola Aadmi".

Now for little details that I know of ...

This is one of the five movies Shammi made in his debut year of 1953. It has some beautiful songs composed by Ghulam Mohammed Saab. Incidentally, yeras later, Shammi's nephew, Rishi Kapoor, also acted in "Laila Majnu" that had music by Madan Mohan & Jaidevji.

There are 16 songs in this movie. I am able to upload 12 of them. The missing songs are shown in red italics in the table below. Please kindly share if you have the missing ones.

The missing song labeled 'main teri shamma hoon...' is the introductory line for 'yaad teri zindagi ka saaz bankar raha gayi' song.
'Tere dar pe aaya hoon' song by Talat was recorded for this movie but was not used here. It was later used in Chor Bazaar (1954).

Another misssing song is available at the following link.

Rail Ka Dibba (1953)

Here is another 1953 movie of Shammi Kapoor. Even though this was his debut year, he had five movies released in the same year each with a different heroine. Here he is working with beautiful Madhubala. Ghulam Mohammad, who shared music composition duties with Sardar Malik for his "Laila Majnu (1953)" movie, provided music for this album. I am not certain of how many songs this movie has. I am uploading six of them here. Source for these has been various places including this Forum.

Thokar (1953)

"Thokar" is the movie in which Shammi Kapoor made his debut. He was only 22 then. He did have acting experience touring with Prithvi Theatre Company (his father's) playing bit roles in various plays. By this time, both his father, Prithviraj Kapoor, and his older brother, Raj Kapoor, have firmly established themselves in the movie industry as formidable forces to reckon with. So when he decided to make a plunge into acting in movies, not just one, but five producers signed him.

Unfortunately for Shammi, eventhough he was in the hands of reputable directors, and was a leading man opposite several established actresses (like Madhubala, Nutan, and Suraiya) it wasn't an auspicious start for him. None of these movies were commercial successes.

One great feature about "Thokar" is its music composed by Sardar Malik. The songs "Aye Gham-E-Dil Kya Karoon" are outstanding. These were written by the famous poet Majaz (his picture is given below). In real life Majazji was Asraar Ul Haq. He was uncle of the great lyricist of today, Javed Akhtar. Javed Akhtar's father, himself another great lyricist, Jan Nisar Akhtar, was married to Majajz's sister.

Majazji was considered to be a romantic poet. He was regarded by many as Keats of India. Among others he was a contemporary of Sahir Ludhianvi. Eventhough Sahir initially didn't have good opinion of Majazji as a person (Majaz was an alocoholic), his poems won over him and they became very good friends until Majaz's death in 1955 at the young age of 44. For several years preceding his death, Majazji who depeneded on heavy drinking suffered several nervous breakdowns and also was institutionalized for some time. Inspite of all kinds of hardships, the genius in Majaz was still alive and stayed sober enough to write. His works were published in several books. One of his famous books is "Awaara". The song "Aye Gham-E-Dil" is one of the songs from that book.

Government of India honored Majaz's meomory by issuing a commemorative stamp recently in March 2008.

I am uploading four songs of this album. Two missing songs are listed in red italiics in the table below. Requesting members to share them if they have them. The song list may or may not be complete.

Now for details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

Chor Bazar (1954)

This movie, "Chor Bazar (1954)", is another one of the series of movies that met the same fate as other earlier efforts of Shammi. He had tough early going.

Sardar Malik provided the tunes for this movie. I happen to have only three songs from it. There are at least three other songs that are missing. These are shown in red italics in the following table. There may be others missing too. If any one of our members have better knowledge about these songs and have the songs, please share with us.

Swarapriya,

Thanks a lot for the Chor Bazaar songs.
One song, 'Dar-dar ki tokre hain' is often associated with Hoor-e-Arab movie.

I don't know the details. It's possible, it was recorded for Chor Bazaar and used in Hoor-e-Arab. Senior members may please clarify.

Gul Sanobar (1954)

There are at least six songs in this album. They were composed by Bulo C. Rani. The song "Kya Aise Bhi Aansoo Hain" may have been composed by Khayyam under the name Sharmaji. However, I do not have a single song from this album. I am inviting members to share if they happen to have any of these songs. The song list, which may or may not be complete, is given below:

Mehbooba (1954)

This movie eventhough was commercially unsuccessful, became a milestone in the Hindi film industry as a movie in which Lata Mangeshkar refused to sing for the music director O.P. Nayyar who midway through its production replaced Roshan, who was signed to be the original music director. The producer of the movie, K. Amarnath, decided to replace Roshanji after he composed three songs for this movie with O.P.

It is not clear why Lataji lost her cool with OP. She already had a solo and a duet recorded for the movie by Roshan. OP, who has one or two movies under his belt and not yet a recognizable name, retorted to Lataji, who already could wield enormous clout in the film industry, that he didn't needed her. To make things worse Shamshadji declared publicly that she will be more than happy to sing for OP. OP did use her voice for the songs he composed for this movie. All in all he had five songs to Roshanji's three.

These songs are hard to find. Until a week ago I didn't have a single one. But Sukeshji, one of our prolific contributor to the Forum, uploaded couple of songs from this film. I am uploading only those songs here. The missing songs are given in the table below in red italics. If anyone of the members have them, please kindly share.

OP, in many of his interviews, has strongly refused this. He maintained that he never intended to invite Lata ji for recording any song because he always thought that her "thin" voice did not suit his compositions. I am not sure if Shamshad ji did or did not make a public statement on the matter of songs in this film.

Thanks for bringing out one after another rare albums of the golden fifties !

Swarapriya, I have the highest regards for Lata ji as the numero uno singer, so I hope whatever I wrote is not taken (by any one) in a wrong way. Whatever I have written above is strictly OP's personal opinion.

I have never read anything Lata ji said about this episode (or in general why she did not sing for OP).

Experts can give more inputs !

Miss Coca Cola (1955)

This movie even though was not a commercial succees it had two important features. One of them is that it has some beautiful music composed by OP saab. These include a duet sung by Ashaji and Mukeshji. Of course, Mukesh didn't sing too many songs for OP. The standout song Mukesh did for OP was to come after 14 years later in "Sambandh (1969)". Another significant thing about this movie is that Shammi met his heroine and his future wife, Geeta Bali, in this movie. Their marriage was short lived because Geeta Bali died very young of complications resulting from smallpox. But in the short span they lived together, she molded his career and steered clear for him by identifying what he can do best. This turning point came in "Tumsa Nahin Dekha" in 1957.

There are nine songs in this movie. I am uploading six of them. The missing songs are listed in the table below in red italics. I am requesting members to share these missing songs if they have them.

Naqab (1955)

This 1955 movie costarred the beautiful Madhubala with Shammi. But as rest of his earlier movies, it also met the familiar fate. It was a commercial failure.

In an interview Shammiji gave recently, he remembers vividly that he was shooting for this movie in Poona at Prabhat Studios. Dilip Kumar Saab was wooing Madhubala at this time and all the tabloids were abuzz with this story and it was no secret. He would drive down from Bombay to meet her often. On an Eid day, Shammiji recalls, Dilipji who was shooting for Gemini's "Insaniyat" in Madras, decided to take some time off from shooting to spend time with Madhubala in Bombay having her take some time off too to spend time together with him.

This movie has 12 songs. I have only three of them that I am uploading here. Missing songs are shown in red italics in the table below. My appeal to the Forum members to share these missing songs if they have them.

Tangewali (1955)

Inspite of a spate of string of failures that haunted him in his early career, Shammiji found work and kept on making movie after movie. This is another 1955-er that also was not a financial success. This movie however has some beautiful songs tuned by that unforgettable maestro who composed so many everlasting songs, Salil Chowdhury.

There are 10 songs in this movie. I am uploading seven of them. I am missing still three of them. These are shown in red italics in the table below. I am appealing the Forum members to share these missing songs if they have them.

Is this "Nadan Ankhiyan Lagi" duet (Rafi-female) really from Film:Shama Parwana(1955)--MD:HB?

Some chroniclers list only 3 Rafi duets in Shama Parwana. Those are:

1.Sham-e-Bahar Aayi

2.Beqarar Hai Koyi

3. Sar-e-Mehfil Jo Jala

Can anyone authoritatively confirm? smile.gif

Shama Parwana (1954)

Here is another album from 1954 starring Shammi. It is amazing that inspite of the string of flops he had five films released in his debut year 1953 followed by another five in 1954. There must have been something that these producers saw in him and hoped for a big success. Also, there is that Kapoor myth with Shammi's father and older brother already highly respected figures in the industry. Whatever it is, I am glad Shammi kept going because his best was just ahead for him that would last many many years.

In this album there are 12 beautiful songs with Suraiya, the leading lady of this movie, dominating with several sweet songs. I also have two extended versions that were ripped from a DVD. Most songs came from a CD but others came from different sources. Therefore quality of the songs is not quite uniform.

Now for details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

Is this "Nadan Ankhiyan Lagi" duet (Rafi-female) really from Film:Shama Parwana(1955)--MD:HB?

Some chroniclers list only 3 Rafi duets in Shama Parwana. Those are:

1.Sham-e-Bahar Aayi

2.Beqarar Hai Koyi

3. Sar-e-Mehfil Jo Jala

Can anyone authoritatively confirm? smile.gif

Venkat

OK, I seem to have got the answer. This "Nadan Ankhiyan Laagi" song is from Shama Parwana(1954) sung by Rafi Saab, Asha Ji and Suraiya Ji.

Hum Sab Chor Hain (1956)

Finally, Shammi broke through the drought of string of commercial failures with this moderately successful "Hum Sab Chor Hain" film. This was made by Filmistan. Most of their movies were out and out entertainers with some beautiful songs. This movie was no exception. They tapped OP to provide the music. The had young I.S. Johar to direct the movie. Joharji was hot on the heels of the success of his another Filmistan movie "Nagin" for which he wrote the story, screenplay, acted, and directed it. Same with this movie. He wrote the story, wrote its screenplay, acted in the movie, and directed it. Before coming into the movies, Joharji, a psotgraduate, established himself as a writer with several stories to his credit.

Another winner in this movie was its heroine, Nalini Jayawant. This petite lady, gives one impression that she is a bundle of energy. She has a child like face, and brings best when acts as an innocent person. Her most famous movie with Dev Anand, "Kala Pani" was few years away, but here she finds in a groove and fits perfectly for Johar's comic talents. Naliniji started as a child actress. Originally she was signed for her singing abilities but soon found herself acting. She got her major breakthrough in Mehboob Khan's "Bahen", a very thought provoking film (incest theme) even by today's standards. In a poll conducted by Filmfare, during mid 50-s, movie cameramen voted Nalini Jayawant to be the most photogenic actress.

There are eight songs in this album. Two of the songs, "Humko Hanste" are almost identical. Therefore, I am uploading only seven of them here. Now for details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

Memsahib (1956)

Here is another Shammi's movie for which there is some great music. This time it is that peerless master, Madan Mohanji. This album by Madan Saab is unusual in the sense that all female songs were sung by Ashaji. Not even a single song by Lataji, his favorite.

I am also uploading a second version of the song "Kehta Hai Dil". In this second version, this duet by Ashaji and Talat Saab, Shammi reminisces those days when this song was recorded. But the song is the same as the regular one.

Now for details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

Thanks a lot for the Chor Bazaar songs.
One song, 'Dar-dar ki tokre hain' is often associated with Hoor-e-Arab movie.
http://www.hamaraforums.com/index.php?s=&showtopic=32835&view=findpost&p=476581
I don't know the details. It's possible, it was recorded for Chor Bazaar and used in Hoor-e-Arab. Senior members may please clarify.

Thanks for the info. Cheers. -S

There are many such instances in the past where the same song featured in two movies (sometimes the same tune, lyrics but not the song); obviously the MD was same in either cases. But it is baffling that whenever I heard the song dar dar ki... from 'Hoor-e-Arab' the MD name was announced Ghulam Md. but otherwise it was given as Sardar Mallick. Someone who has seen 78 discs of both films can clarify.

Rangeen Raatein (1956)

The most notable thing about this movie is that Shammi fell in love with Geeta Bali during its filming that eventually led to their marriage. Geetaji had a cameo role in the movie. She decided to appear because Kidar Sharma was directing it. Sharmaji was the one who introduced Geeta Bali to the movies.

Shammi, in the brief span of his professional career by this time already acted with Geeta Bali in two movies; "Miss Coca Cola" and "Coffee House". Geetaji was on a high note of her career at this juncture. Shammi wooed her for several months and secretly married her before announcing it to his parents.

Besides Geeta Bali there are two other leading ladies in this movie; Chand Usmani and Mala Sinha. Shammi acted with Chand Usmani earlier in "Jeevan Jyoti" for the same director. Bengali speaking Mala Sinha was new to Hindi movies and could hardly speak Hindi. Geeta Bali took her into her wings and groomed her for her role in this movie.

There are eight songs in this movie. All these songs were uploaded recently by Faizel ji. My heartfelt thanks to him for sharing these songs with us. Now for details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

And if I remember correctly, Geeta Bali played a male role in the film. Its not a role where a woman pretends to be a man and finally reveals her identity, she actually perfromed a male role.

As commented by the veteran Hindi Fim, HFM music (and cricket) expert Shirish Kanekar, this could possibly the only such instance !

No, Parag. Way back in late 40's, much before 1956 Rangeen Raatein, actress G. Varalakshmi played the character of Prahlada in the Telugu movie "Bhakta Prahlada". She was a grown up woman and couldn't hide her feminine features inspite of the make up worn. It looked so bad that it was almost embarrassing to watch it. It was one of those famous miscasts in Telugu movie history.

This is one of the three movies in which Shammi appeared with Geeta Bali, whom he married during the filming of "Rangeen Raatein" the previous year. Mirza Sahiban (1957)

Here is another great love story from the land of lore, Punjab. Punjab must be a special place to have so many love stories immersed in their rich culture.

Earlier Shammi made Laila Majnu, another great romantic tragedy, with Nutan. Inspite of the great songs, that movie was a commercial failure. This movie was made with Shyama as Sahiban. But results were no different even this go around. Unfortunately this movie was following the great Noor Jehan's 1947 movie with the same title. (I will upload songs from this movie in this section right after I am done with this).

The great tragic fable of Mirza Sahiban was made into a movie several times. The first one was made in 1933. The second one with the incomparable Noor Jehan was made in 1947. This was the third one. In 2006, another movie with the same title was made. Pakistan also made this movie, with the same title, in 1951.

Here are the details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

In this he mentions "I remember Pandit Hussan Laal, the youngest brother of Pandit Amarnaath, bringing his car and driving all of us to an old temple in a suburb located between Tardeo and Grant Road. "

There is a nice pic of Durrani sahab, C Ramachandra ji, Lata ji and Pandit S D Batish ji on the same page.

Swarapriya,

I always watch for your great selections. Thanks again for yet another great old album.
I have some doubt about the male singer in 'Aaj miyaan ji' song. In this song, the male voice sounds different from other two GMD songs from this album. Let's wait for senior members to confirm the male singer.

Exon

Exon,

Thanks for the appreciative comments. I know you've one of the critical eyes and can catch a problem quickly. As a matter of fact, I did have doubts when I was uploading this song. I agree with you. It doesn't sound like GMD. It must be someone else. May be someone can throw some light on this.

Thanks and cheers,
Swarapriya

Mirza Sahiban (1947)

Here are the songs from the great Noor Jehan starrer Mirza Sahiban. This movie stars another Kapoor, Trilok. There are 10 delightful songs in this album with Noor Jehan singing six of them (solos and duets). I am uploading this album so that our members can appreciate defferences between this album and the 1957 Shammi starrer.

Now for the details of the songs of "Mirza Sahiban (1947)" and the songs themselves ...

Parag, Swarapriya,

Could it be Pandit Husnlal? I notice the male voice has some resemblance to his (Husnlal's) duet with Lata in Payar Ki Manzil (1950) & another duet from Sanam (1951). Pyar Ki Manzil song was recently uploaded in the forum; though the audio is of average quality.

Yes Exon, that is possible. There are just one or two lines sung by the male singer. I have not listened to the other songs you mentioned, but it is very much possible that Husnalal ji would have sung this song with Shamshad ji.

Tumsa Nahin Dekha (1957)

Finally here is the movie where real Shammi arrived. It was a long way coming but came he did and with such a thud that it made waves all over the Hindi film world. After this movie, for Shammi, for his fans, and his movies were never going to be the same again.

Under the guidance of his wife Geeta Bali, Shammi went through a complete metamorphis for this movie to give one last gasp try to save his professional carrier. With so many critics panning him to be another Raj Kapoor look-alike, he shaved his upper lip. He studied carefully why Elvis Presley and James Dean were so popular with youth all over the world. He groomed his hair Jimmy Dean style. He took a guitar and added twists and turns to his acting a la Elvis even though he could not play it.

When "Tumsa Nahin Dekha" was released, people immediately embraced this new incarnation of Shammi. He was an overnight boxoffice sensation. Things in Bomaby film world were never going to be the same anymore.

This movie had a first-time director, Nasir Hussain. He was a popular writer for Filmistan Studios. One of his most popular story was Dev Anand-starrer "Munimji". Hussain also wrote the story and the screenplay for the movie. Its heroine, Ameeta was a protege of the head of the Filmistan Studio. He was relaunching her with this movie. All the camera work, lighting, exposure, and publicity were carefully centered around her. But when the movie was released, people flocked theatres to watch mostly Shammi and listen to OP's magical music.

The movie's huge success was eminently aided by one of the best scores OP provided in his career until that time. Every song was a huge hit. Every song left a deep impression on its listeners. To aid him were superb singing by Rafi Saab and Ashaji. Majrooh Saab wrote all of the lyrics except the title song. The title song was written by Sahir Saab. Originally Sahir Saab was signed to write the lyrics for the movie. He was coming off from a crowning achievement of penning lyrics for Guru Dutt's human saga "Pyaasa". He was in mood to write similar lyrics and was not ready for the type of lyrics this movie demanded. So Nasir Hussain quietly replaced Sahir Saab with Majrooh Saab. Majrorh Saab did not disappoint. He was magnificent.

The title song sung by Ashaji that I am including here was not in the movie. I am also including an extended version of the song "Sar Par Topi". This is a DVD rip. Now for the details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

Chaar Dil Chaar Raahein (1959)

This may be the first movie in which both brothers Raj Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor acted together. Did they appear in any other movie together apart from this? This movie was written, produced and directed by one of our film industry's stalwarts, K.A. Abbas. Abbasji was a good friend of Raj Kapoor and helped Raj for his successes with movies like Awara, Shri 420, and Bobby by writing their stories.

There are seven songs in this movie. I am uploading all seven of them here. The male voice in the song "Stella" is attributed to Mahendra Kapoor. If it is, I think he sounds so different. I checked "Earthmusic" also. It also attributes this voice to Mahendra. Can anyone confirm this please? (Exon should be able to tell this easily. He is so good at these things. Thanks.)

Here are the details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

Swarapriya,

Char Dil Char rahen is a nice album. I like its songs very much.

The missing song 'saanj ki laali' is none other than 'Intezar Aur Abhi'. Apparently, there are some audio of this song without the first antara; therefore the confusion.
I saw a note on 'Stella O Stella' song that it was reused in Superman Ki Wapas (1960).
Finally, the 'Saathi Re' song has four singers (Mukesh, Manna Dey, Mahendra Kapoor, Meena Kapoor).

Many many sincere thanks, Swarapriya Ji, for the Asha Bhosle version of 'Yun To Ham Ne Lakh Haseen Dekhen Hain". If I remember right, I did hear this version once while watching the full movie somewhere.

Also my sincere thanks for the Rafi-Lata duet from "Rangeen Raatein(1956)".

Also for the Rafi Saab's songs from Film:Mirza Sahiban(1957). What an excellent rendition by Rafi Saab in that 'Chod Ke Teri Duniya Le Ham Jaa Rahen Hain". Though, everywhere, this song is listed as a Rafi solo, I think it should be listed as a Rafi- Suraiya duet!

Dil Deke Dekho (1959)

This movie is worth remembering not for the introduction of Asha Parekh as a full fledged heroine (she acted as a child artiste before) and not what a big boxoffice smash it was, but for one and only one thing. Usha Khanna. What a stunning debut as a music director by Khanna ji. Anyone can be proud of such a smashing debut. Especially in the male dominated field. How many female music directors can we count? I don't know anyone in recent times. I don't know anyone. Period. This may be because of my ignorance. But I know at least there was one instance. P. Bhanumati, a great singer, writer, humorist, actress, producer, director, did also compose music for one movie in Telugu. I believe it was "Chandirani". There may be other instances which I am not aware of.

According to Wikipedia, apparently Usha Khanna didn't even have musical training. Her father was a singer as well as a song writer. It was O.P. Nayyar who introduced Usha Khanna to S. Mukherjee of Filmalaya Studios. It was for her singing. In this audition she sang a song that she composed music herself. Impressed Mukherjee asked Ms. Khanna to compose two songs per day for one year. But before the year was over he signed her to compose music for "Dil Deke Dekho". Eventhough the music for this movie was Nayyarish, it was nonetheless magnificent. Every song was a huge hit. The melodies she created still linger in music lovers' hearts.

It is a tribute to perseverence and creative skills of Usha Khannaji that she survived in this industry for nearly 50 years. No small achievement in this type of movie business.

There are nine songs in this movie. All of them were sung by Rafi Saab. Five of them are duets with Ashaji. My one of personal alltime favorites of Rafi Saab is the song "Hum Aur Tum Aur Yeh Sama". This song was also picturized by Nasir Hussain, the director, so sensually that makes an indelible and deep impression on your heart.

Interstingly, "Megha Re Bole/Bade Hain Dil Ke Kale" is one composite song in the album. In the movie also it was picturized back to back without interruption. In my opinion these are two separate songs. Therefore I am not only uploading the original version, but I am uploading these two songs separately. You may or may not want to download these songs separately.

Now for the details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

Very good introduction by you of the Film, as always.

I fully agree that everyone was amzaed at the huge impact this newcomer, female MD had created with this very first Film. All the songs, without exception, were superhits. People, who initially did not know the MD's name, have all thought that the MD must certainly be O.P.Nayyar.

I also agree that the song, "Hammm Aur Tummmm Aur Yeaaaah Sammaa", is the crowning glory for the Film, what with the highly stylised and a bit intoxicated way Rafi Saab renders it in a highly controlled and modualted voice.

Usha Khanna is a truly (and probably the only) full-fledged female Music Director with a large number of successful Films, under her belt. P.Bhanumati had composed for just one movie in Telugu called "Chakrapani", and not "Chandirani". The MDs for Film:Chandirani in Telugu, Tamil as well as Hindi were C.Subbaraman and M.S.Viswanadhan.

Film:Chakrapani, for which Bhanumati was the MD, had some memorable compositions such as the Lori, "Mella Mellaga Challa Challga Raave Nidura Haayiga", the Tyagaraja Keertan, "Pakkala Nilabadi" and another Lori "Uyyala Jampala Lugaravaya".

Mohar (1959)

Here is a movie in which the wife and husband team the great Geeta Bali & the inimitable Shammi Kapoor teamed together. It has some beautiful music by late Madan Mohan. Almost all songs are pleasing to hear. My favorites are the duet of Lataji and Rafi Saheb and the solo by Hemantji. These songs came from various sources including CDs. All songs are of fairly good qaulity except that of Talatji. This song is noisy. Cleaning didn't help. I am missing one song from this album. It is a song by Ashaji. Its details are shown in red italics in the table below. Requesting the Forum members to upload this and share this with rest of us if they can please.

Thanks for Dil Deke Dekho and Mohar.

Usha Khanna is not the first lady music director in hindi film industry.
The first woman composer was Jaddan Bai, mother of Nargis, who produced, directed and composed the music for Talash-e-Haq (1935).
In the same year, Saraswati Devi scored the music for Bombay Talkies' film Jawani Ki Hawa. Unlike Jaddan Bai she was a full fledged composer for many years to come. She was actually a Parsi lady whose real name was Khursheed Manchershah Minocher-Homji . These are some of her other movies I got from a website:-
1. Jhoola (1941)
2. Naya Sansaar (1941)
3. Bhakt Raidas (1943)
4. Prarthana (1943)
5. Dr. Kumar (1944)
6. Aamrapali (1945)
7. Maharani Minaldevi (1946)
8. Khandaani (1947)
9. Naqli Heera (1948)
10. Usha Haran (1949)
11. Achhut Kanya (1936) (very famous for this)
12. Naqli Heera (1948)
13. Bachelor Husband (1950)
14. Bandhan (1940) (famous for the song Chal Chal Re Naujawaan)

Her picture is attached.

Thanks for Dil Deke Dekho and Mohar.

Usha Khanna is not the first lady music director in hindi film industry.
The first woman composer was Jaddan Bai, mother of Nargis, who produced, directed and composed the music for Talash-e-Haq (1935).
In the same year, Saraswati Devi scored the music for Bombay Talkies' film Jawani Ki Hawa. Unlike Jaddan Bai she was a full fledged composer for many years to come. She was actually a Parsi lady whose real name was Khursheed Manchershah Minocher-Homji . These are some of her other movies I got from a website:-
1. Jhoola (1941)
2. Naya Sansaar (1941)
3. Bhakt Raidas (1943)
4. Prarthana (1943)
5. Dr. Kumar (1944)
6. Aamrapali (1945)
7. Maharani Minaldevi (1946)
8. Khandaani (1947)
9. Naqli Heera (1948)
10. Usha Haran (1949)
11. Achhut Kanya (1936) (very famous for this)
12. Naqli Heera (1948)
13. Bachelor Husband (1950)
14. Bandhan (1940) (famous for the song Chal Chal Re Naujawaan)

Her picture is attached.

Hildebrand ji,

Thanks for the information about feamle music dirrectors. That was very educational to me. It appears to me that Saraswati Devi was a successful composer as evidenced by the number of films for which she scored music. I wonder why this didn't encourage other talented women to come forward and become music directors? Talent is something that is independent of the genders. And I don't believe there was any dearth of talented women in our country.

Cheers,
Swarapriya

You are most welcome Swarapriya ji.
I agree talent is independent of gender. Reason for having a male dominated music field could be that film industry has not been seen as a good career opportunity for women for various reasons. Hence their presence is less in the music field although they definitely would give quality music like some of these ladies have given. Ladies have been more ready to be singers. Asha ji was offered a number of times by various filmmakers post of composer but she stuck to singing. Lata Mangeshkar has also given music in following marathi movies under assumed name of Anand Ghan:-
* 1950 - Ram Ram Pavhana
* 1963 - Maratha Tituka Melvava
* 1963 - Mohityanchi Manjula
* 1965 - Sadhi Manase
* 1969 - Tambadi Mati

She won Maharashtra State Government's Best Music Director Award for the film Sadhi Manase. The song Airanichya deva tula from the same film received best song award.
Perhaps music composition was seen as more full time job than singing for which ladies were not ready due to family commitments.

Raat Ke Raahi (1959)

I do not have too many details of this movie except that it starred Jabeen Jalil and Shammi Kapoor in the leading roles. Its music was provided by Jaidev (two songs) and Bipin & Babul (rest). I have only two songs from this album. Both are at 192 Kb/s. Lyrics for both the songs were penned by Vishwamitra Adil. Here are the details of these two songs:

1. "Aa Bhi Jaa Bewafaa" by Asha Bhosle. Duration 4:57
2. "Ek Nazar Ek Adaa" by Mohd. Rafi. Duration 3:52

Here are these two songs ...

here is ''maine pi bhi hai'' by rafi sahab composed by bipin-babul.

This is slightly off the topic and I don't mean to spam this great thread, but here are my comments.

Being a person from Maharashtra, I have thoroughly enjoyed the melodious music composed by Lata ji. With all the due respect to the nightingale, I fail to understand why she chose to use a nickname when it came to composing the music for Marathi films. The word "Anandghan" means the cloud which brings joy. This word is not gender specific but not feminine for sure. I mean Lata ji was at the peak of her popularity as singer when she composed music for these films, yet she did not use her name. Kind of strange!

And talking of the only notable and famous female music composer Usha Khanna, its a sad story that in spite of a great talent and a grand debut she was relegated to composing music for mostly low budget films (and even some not so family oriented films at the far end of her career).

Ujala (1959)

If my memory serves right, this was the very firtst film for which Shankar & Jaikishan provided music for a Shammi Kapoor movie. Shammi became a good friend of the music duo when he also worked at Prithvi Theaters where both Shankar and Jaikishan worked. They were good friends of his older brother Raj and rest of the family, so naturally he became friends with them. Jaikishan was much junior to Shankar in age and Shammi became very close to him.

The music duo weren't certain yet who should be singing for Shammi. This movie was an experiment. They had both Manna Dey and Mukesh sing for him. Irrespective of who the singers were, the music was a huge hit. All of the songs were very popular. Both of the solos by Lataji were immensely popular. The duet of Lataji and Manna Dey "Jhoomta Masusam Mast Mahina" was on the top of the charts for a long time. With Shammi in the lead role, these type of boisterously funny songs were a commonplace.

Here are the details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

ohmy.gif What a novel idea, indeed! Obtain original files of 128kbps from one thread, convert them to 192kbps and upload 'em again! These files are still present in Shankar-Jaikishan's fora.

http://www.hamaraforums.com/index.php?showtopic=62204

Swarpriyaji, I fail to understand what was the need of encoding these files on higher bit? Does it make a huge (noticeable) difference to the quality? If so, please tell me the trick. If not, I request you to leave the original file as it is to show some respect to the original uploader! I wonder this is just a way of increasing the upload to download ratio (even though you are already an angel)?

PS: these files (longer versions) were originally uploaded by me!

Hi Anupamaji:

The songs downloaded from CDs are generally 192kbps, therefore they might not have been converted but rather downloaded straight from a CD.

Akbaralibhai, I remember you requesting me for the songs of College Girl 1960 and I uploaded 'em (film versions) upon your request. Are you telling me the extended versions are from the CD? I have both the versions and can very well tell the difference between the two. And moreover, Swarpriyaji has admitted to uploading those extended versions that she downloaded from HF itself. You even downloaded Swarpriyaji's files. You have both versions (Swarpriyaji's & mine) so you be the judge. They are of the same length. What a co-incidence!

Anupama ji,

You may be right about some of the songs I may have been used from your uploads. If I am looking for my ratio to go up, I don't need to do it. I generally acknowledge that these are from the forum members. If I haven't done that, it probably is my oversight. I am not here to take away any of your credit. It seems like I have indevertently touched some of your nerves to got you upset so much. If I have done this, apparently I did per the tone of your message, please accept my apologies. I do have a huge music library and it is a fact that I have over 70% of Shankar & Jaikishan's albums in CDs and nearly 95% of their songs fom various sources.

I like 192 Kb/s bit rate because it is my personal preference but I am not trying to prove anything one way or another. Again, sorry to have hurt your feelings, even unintentioally.

Anupama Ji: Yes, you are absolutely right, I originally requested the songs but I am sorry for the confusion as I did not mean to include the extended versions, which were originally uploaded by you. I was pointing to the other songs contained in the CD (manufactured) and directly uploaded from them @ 192. I do not believe the original CD has extended versions. I should have clarified this. Sorry for the confusion again.

Apology accepted!
But it seems like you have missed the point here. It was not about hurting my feelings or touching my raw nerve or even uploading/using my files. Did I mention anything about you taking credit for my work? You didn't as you clearly stated that the files were courtesy of the forum members. So it's not about taking away any of mine or anybody's credit. I simply asked you what was the point of unnecessarily encoding the original file of 128kbps to a higher bitrate (just for the heck of following the pattern of 192kbps or personal choice) if it didn't make any difference to the quality, be it my uploads or somebody else's. This might affect the ratio of those who are not angels.
I understand it would be a different matter if they were your original uploads but if I've or someone else has uploaded a file, at whatever bitrate, I request you to leave the file as it is if you choose to further upload it on your thread.
If the file has been treated/edited to remove the hiss/noise or enhance the vocals then I should download it too with gratitude. But this was not the case here.
Nothing more from my side on this!
See you around!
Cheers,
Anu

Exonji,

Thanks for uploading the Asha-Shammi song. Heard it for the first time.

It reminds me of Dil Pukare Aare Aare duet of Rafi and Lata from Jewel Thief. The tunes sound similar.

Thanks a lot.

Rajan

P.s. I listened this song for the second time now. Initially during slow alap, I remembered Nanhi Kali Sone chali. Then for a short time I felt I was getting a hint of Tum Na Jaane Kis Jahan mein. Then a line reminded of Jewel Thief number. - Rajan

Singapore (1960)

Here is another great musical from the team of Shammi and Shankar & Jaikishan. I have all eight songs from the original CD I am uploading here. I am also uploading seven extended versions of the songs. Some of these came from DVD rips and others were contributed by the Forum members. I may have changed the bit rates to 192 Kb/s from the original uploaded ones. Please accept my apologies in advance if this bothers you. I generally clean these songs if it is necessary and try to reduce background noise if it exists. It probably was not the case with these. When you are working with multitudes of songs it is difficult to keep tabs on which ones were worked on.

Now for details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

I believe that is the case. The Eagle Films banner made many movies with Shammi. Two years earlier, Shammi was teamed with Padmini's younger sister Ragini in "Mujrim", produced by the same banner. Padmini, a great dancer, passed away this past year after living in US for a long time. She ran a dance school there and may have been in diamonds business as well.

Cheers,
Swarapriya

Unfortunately, it does make one big difference apart from increasing the file size: converting an existing mp3 from one bitrate to another actually *worsens* the audio quality. The sound quality of an mp3 depends on the settings at which the *original* conversion was done: i.e, when the song was first ripped from its original format (tape, CD, DVD, etc) and converted to mp3. Any re-conversion of the mp3 - regardless of the bitrate of the reconversion- necessarily increases the loss incurred in the original conversion.

If we are stuck with a low-res mp3 version of a song, just leave it alone. The only way to get a high-res version is to find the original recording (or, if possible, a version in a non-lossy/not-so-lossy format like wav or Apple Lossless) and freshly encode it in mp3 setting a higher bitrate.

Warm regards,
Abhay

Thank you for the elaboration. What I tried to say in one line was that changing the bitrate upwards does not enhance the quality of the sound. It will be the same or may be worse, on account of repeated decoding and encoding. As you said leave the bitrate as it is, unless you wish to encode in a lower bitrate for whatever reasons. I generally stick to 128 kbps, when recording or encoding from original source and no change thereafter.

Sukesh

Boy Friend (1961)

Shammi Kapoor was the chief benefactor of most films Shankar-Jaikishan scored for. Almost all these films, with Rafi Saab as the voice of Shammi, were runaway hits. After this many number of years, none of these songs lost their charm. With Rafi Saab singing a song like "I Go I Go" one wonders whether anyone else could have done justice to Shammi's pranks. Yet, Shammi and Rafi Saab come out with the rich and catchy "Dheere Dheere Chal Aye Bheegi Hawa". What a beautiful and winning combination of the singer, music directors, and the actor this has been. Unforgettable.

Aarti Mukherjee was the cosinger of "I Go I Go". She did not sing again for Shankar & Jaikishan until 1974. That year she sang in the movie "Neelima". As in most Shammi's movies, Rafi Saab is the dominating voice of most of the songs. Almost all of them are beautiful songs of this album. Listen to how Rafi Saab croons "Salaam Aap Ki Meethi Nazar Ko". We were so fortunate that we had amidst us such an awsome singing talent that continues to provide immense pleasure for generations to come.

I am including an extended version of one of the songs. This is by the courtesy of the Forum members.

Junglee (1961)

"Junglee" elevated Shammi Kapoor to a bankable superstar status. The songs, the movie, its then new petite heroine it all worked together in the favor of the movie. The movie went on to celebrate diamond jubilee at many locations. Its songs are still fun to listen to.

The catch word "Yahoo" was famous even before internet came along, thanks to Shammi & Rafi Saab. By the way, I read some place that in the movie "Yahoo" was uttered (more like shouted) by the director Prayag Raj. Also, for the song "Sukoo Sukoo", these words in the song were actually spoken, apparently by the music director Shankar himself.

I am uploading all eight songs from the movie from a CD. These are at 192 Kb/s. I am also uploading several extended versions of the songs. These are courtesy of the Forum members and are being uploaded at their original bit rates.

China Town (1962)

After a string of successes Shammi enjoyed with Shankar & Jaikishan at the helm of music, he insisted on having them to be the composers for all of his films. But Shakti Samanta was a good friend of Shammi. When he signed Ravi to compose music for "China Town" Shammi couldn't argue with him. It was a good thing too. Because the music was certainly one of the brightest things of this movie. Every song was a major hit. Rafi sang seven out of eight songs in this movie, all duets except for one. That solo, "Baar Baar Dekho", was a smash. So were his duets. Asha sang six songs, five duets with Rafi Saab and a solo.

I am uplaoding all of the songs from a CD. The extended version of "Yamma Yamma" is by the courtesy of the Forum members. Now for the details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

Professor (1962)

Here is an all out entertainer from the Eagle Films production house. They made series of movies with Shammi in the lead with most of them becoming popular. This movie was no exception. It has only six songs but they were all very popular. Shammi was nominated for Filmfare best actor award but didn't win. He lost to Ashok Kumar for "Rakhi". Hasrat Jaipuri was nominated for the song "Gulbadan". But he lost to Shakeel Badayuni for the song "Kahin Deep Jale" in "Bees Saal Baad". However, the music directors Shankar & Jaikishan won for the best music. It is ironic that "Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam" which was also released in 1962, in spite of its magnificent music never even got nominated. But Hemant da's other movie of 1962, "Bees Saal Baad" was nominated but lost. I am not complaining about the music of "Professor". I love the songs. They were all crowd pleasers and very popular. But "Sahib Bibi Ghulam's" music was a class act.

Here is Shammi costarring with another newcomer, in this case, Kalpana. Because of her limited talent, she didn't last in the movies for too long. Apart from this movie she had only one more winner in Dev Anand-starrer "Teen Deviyan".

In 1999, this movie was remade with Ravina Tandon and Govinda. Name of the movie was "Anari No. 1". Aruna Irani played the portion of Lalita Pawar. But this movie didn't click.

I am uploading all six songs from the movie CD album. I am also uploading extended versions of all six songs. Some of these were DVD rips and others were contributed by the Forum members. As is habit with me, I may have saved some of these songs from lower bit rates to 192 kb/s. My apologies if this causes any discomfort.

Dil Tera Deewana (1962)

Here is another Shammi-starrer for which the maestros Shankar & Jaikishan provided music for. Most of these songs were very popular when the movie was released. Some are still catchy. Take for example the solo by Rafi Saab, "Nazar Bachakar". A beautifully rendered song of the kind Rafi ji was a master. Most of the duets are delightful but my favorite is "Mujhe Kitna Pyaar Hai Tum Se".

Bluff Master (1963)

This movie once again teamed the hot pair of "Junglee". But the electricity Saira Banu and Shammi Kapoor generated in that movie was missinng from this one. Yet, there are some fine tunes created by Kalyanji & Anandji. Especially the song "Govinda Ala Re" was a rage when the movie was released. The song was done with such gusto by Rafi Saab that it gives one an exhilarating lift. No one does better than Rafi ji.

Jab Se Tumhen Dekha Hai (1963)

Here is a movie that starred the husband and wife team Geeta Bali and Shammi Kapoor together. However, the hero was Pradeep Kumar. The music for this movie was provided by Dattaram, a long time assistant to the duo Shankar & Jaikishan. Even though Dattaram gave music to some handful of movies, he was never able to reach the top wrung of musicians.

There are seven songs in this movie. I am uploading five of them here. The song "Tumhen Husn Deke" is quite long. It came in two parts. I am uploading both of these as well as the "full" version. If you download the full vesion, there is no need to download the other two parts of the song.

According to Earthmusic there is a solo version of this song. I am missing it as well as another song. These are shown in red italics in the table below. I amrequesting the members to share these if they can.

Surhall ji,

This happend with me a few times that the songs may have been already uploaded, very recently. This happens with many people. I wasn't undermining your efforts in anyway. One of the problems I have is that I don't navigate around the Forum topics enough to see what is going on because of my own time constraints. I wasn't undermining your efforts. I apologize if this bothered you in anyways.

Swarapriya

Maharani (1957)

I don't have a clue about this 1957 Shammi's movie. If the Forum members can share any information about this movie and can share some of its songs, it will be great.

Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya (1963)

The music director Ravi is once again back together with Shammi after the success of their "China Town" venture. Even though songs here have not the same "upbeat" flavor to them compared to the songs of "China Town" they still are fairly good. There are nine songs in this movie. I am uploading all of these here from a CD.

Here are the details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

Swarapriya Ji please reupload this album once again

Kashmir Ki Kali (1964)

Here is an album with some absolutely beautiful songs composed by OP. Bengali actress Sharmila Tagore was introduced to Hindi movies with this one. For beautiful Sharmila, the talent is in her blood. Born in Hyderabad, India, Sharmila is the great grand daughter of Rabindranath Tagore. Satyajit Ray gave her the first break in his movie "Apur Sansar", the second part of his famous Apu trilogy. Sharmila was only 14 years old at that time. She went onto act in five of Ray's movies.

This movie with the beautiful backdrop of Kashmir and fresh faced Sharmila plus mind boggling songs performed with fervor and gusto by both Asha and Rafi, was a dynamite of entertainment. Every song was a major hit, without exception. However, the outstanding song of the album, one of my alltime favorite duets of Asha and Rafi happens to be "Isharon Isharon Mein". This song was performed by both singers with so much zest that it is a heart grabber.

All songs except a couple are from CD. The "Humming" by Asha ji and the extended version of "Meri Jaan Balle Balle" are by the courtesy of the Forum members.

Now for the details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

Rajkumar (1964)

Here is a delighful musical from Shankar & Jaikishan that paired with Shammi for the first time beautiful Sadhna. Every song from this album is a sheer delight. The song "Naach Re Man Batkamma" has the Telugu word "Batkamma" in it. Batkamma is a festival that comes just before Dasshera and is mainly celebrated by women of Telangana region in Andhra Pradesh. Shankar, one of the music directors of this movie, grew up in Hyderabad and knew Telugu language very well. He was well versed with the local culture and customs and decided to use the word here in this song. Couple of other movies of Shankar & Jaikishan ("Gumnaam" and "Shatranj") also used this very same word effectively in songs. But those came much later than this movie.

Rafi Saab is in his element in his rendering of the songs in this movie. One my favorites is the song "Is Rang Badalti Duniya Mein". I probably listened to this song hundreds and hundreds of times and I never get tired of it. Another winner is the duet "Dilruba Dil Pe Tu". All these songs came from a CD.

SP..thanks a lot for these beautiful albums. The lines which come to my mind is " Chalo ek baar phir se ajnabhi banjaye hum dono"..I still remember the struggle we did to acquire these songs in our town in eighties..the euphoria to get those records and then get them on cassettes. How wonderful it would be ..to find these gems for someone new ! thanks..thanks.. bow.gif

It is infact a common practice to keep some words while tuning a song and MDs used to use the words from their mother tongue ..read some where that Raj Kapoor insisted on keeping the original words " Ramayya vastavayya" in Shri 420. very interesting discussion... smile.gif

Exon, you have not left anything more to 'sort out'! smile.gif I mean you have sorted them out yourself.

Incidentally, the ever-green patriotical, "Sarfaroshi Ki Tamanna" was best and also most sung by Rafi Saab. Three Rafi versions in the above three movies!

Are there any more Rafi versions of this song? Friends, please enlighten.

Here is another Shammi starrer with the music of Shankar & Jaikishan. Again, all the songs were very popular when the movie was released. Especially, all three solos by Rafi Saab are excellent. There is also a song ("Dekho Ab To") as a tribute to Beatles who visited India when this movie was in production. I am also uploading several extended versions of these songs. The original songs are from CD whereas the extended versions are from DVD.

Here are details of the regular version songs ...

Anupama,

Thanks a lot for the Shaheed album (1963).

A request to members to help me sort out songs from following three Shaheed movies.

Shaheed-E-Azam Bhagat Singh (1954) [Prem Adeeb] (Music: Lacchiram)
aakaash ke aanchal mein sitaara hi rahega - Rafi
mera roose na bansariwaala mohan kala kala (Movie?)
sambhaalo sambhaalo zara apne dil ko - Shamshad
sarfaroshi ki tamannaa - Rafi, chorus

Shaheed Bhagat Singh (1963) [starring Shammi Kapoor] (Music: Husnlal Bhagatram)
ae ma meri yaadon ko dil hi mein - Rafi (54 or 63)
chadh ke suli bharat ma de jisne (3 parts) - P D Jalota
hain abhi aur ae dil tere imtihan - Rafi, chorus
mera rang de basanti chola - Rafi, chorus
nazar ki choat ko jo dil par kha nahin sakte - Shamshad (Movie: Shaheed-E-Azam Bhagat Singh?)
sarfaroshi ki tamannaa - Rafi, chorus

Shaheed (1964) [starring Manoj Kumar] (Music: Prem Dhawan)
jalte bhi gaye kehte bhi gaye aazaadi ke parwaane - Rafi
jogi, hum toh lut gaye tere pyaar mein - Lata

Thanks,

Exon

Exon, you have not left anything more to 'sort out'! smile.gif I mean you have sorted them out yourself.

Incidentally, the ever-green patriotical, "Sarfaroshi Ki Tamanna" was best and also most sung by Rafi Saab. Three Rafi versions in the above three movies!

Are there any more Rafi versions of this song? Friends, please enlighten.

Venkat

Venkat,

Thanks for confirming the songs.
Some of the songs, especially 'ae ma meri yaadon ko', I get the feeling that the song might have been recorded much earlier than 1963. This was the reason for my doubt.

You are right, Exon. I do not remember when exactly, but when I first d/led some of the Rafi songs from Shaheed Bhagat Singh-1963 and heard them, I immediately posted that these songs did not appear to be of 1963. The obvious reason: The voice of Rafi Saab in those songs belonged to the mid/late fifties. The other supporting reason: HB were not much in business in 1963.

Teesri Manzil (1966)

Here is one of my favorite movies. Everything comes together in this movie like a well organized and well executed musical concert. The story, songs, music, performances, they all add up to make this a thoroughly enjoyable entertainer.

Nasir Hussain, who produced the film, was busily getting ready with "Baharon Ke Sapne" and approached Vijay Anand to direct this movie. Originally Dev Anand was to star in it. But Dev was enjoying his new found success and recognition from making "Guide" and was not immediately available. Instead the role went to Shammi.

Hussain was looking for someone to compose the music and Shammi recommended his old friends Shankar and Jaikishan. Majrooh Sultanpuri, who wrote lyrics for every Nasir Hussain movie and a good friend of Hussain, recommended R.D. Burman. R.D. was new to the game and had only "Chhote Nawab" behind him. Hussain went along with the idea. Vijay Anand knew R.D. well (being son as well assistant of S.D. Burman), and liked the idea. But Shammi wouldn't budge. R.D. composed couple of songs to convince Shammi that he will be able to do the justice and when Shammi heard them he had no problem.

R.D. became a regular with Nasir Hussain for many films. The movie music was a standout and had some breakaway music and sounds that were never heard on an Indian screen before. It was a clever juxtaposition of eastern and western music that was at once appealing to ears as well as hearts. Asha Bhosle and Mohd. Rafi sang all the songs in this movie. This will be the last Nasir Hussain movie Rafi Saab does all the songs. He did return with a bang in Hussain's "Hum Kisis Se Kum Nahin (1977)" and sang the award winning "Kya Hua Tera Vaada".

The picturization of the songs from this movie is still talked about. Vijay Anand uses some unusual camera angles to picturize the songs, like a dance from an eye or a guitar hole. Incidentally Salim, who would later become part of the famous Salim-Javed writing team, played a bit role in the movie. He plays drums to Helen's song and the dance number "Oh Haseena Zulfonwaali". Salim later married Helen.

During the filming of this movie Shammi lost his actress wife Geeta Bali. Vijay Anand helped Shammi overcome the grief.

Now for details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

There seems to be a small snippet version of the song "Yeh Din Din Hai Khushi Ke" rendered by Geeta Bali in this film....

Any chance that this snippet is available ?

An Evening In Paris (1967)

Here is another winner from Sharmila Tagore & Shammi Kapoor combination. To this add some beautiful tunes of Shankar & Jaikishan. What you have is an evening in Paris. Out of 10 songs in this album, Rafi Saab has six solos and a duet. When you hear this song it gives you a feeling that you are walking in the wee hours of the night side by side with your loved one.

Many thanks for sharing so much of lesser known facts about this film. You are truly an ocean of music and the related knowledge. A true spirit of HF. Many thanks for all your efforts.

Brahmachari (1968)

This movie won several major Filmfare awards. It won for best picture, best actor for Shammi Kapoor, best music for Shankar & Jaikishan, their third, best lyrics for Shailendra (his second) for the song "Main Gaaoon", best singer for Mohd. Rafi for the song "Dil Ke Jharokhe Mein", and best story for Sachin Bhowmick. There are eight songs on the CD, all sung by Mohd. Rafi. Seven of them are solos and one is a duet. The movie has one of my alltime favorite songs of Rafi Saab "Dil Ke Jharokhe Mein". What a great song. It was sung witch such gay abandon that its sweetness affects you infectiously.
