As many of you may remember, earlier this summer we had a series of
four surveys on Lata. Each survey covered a specific period and together the four surveys covered the entire career of Lata (so far). After these period-based ones, the idea was to have one final survey that would cover the entire span of Lata's career in one go. I know that many of you are waiting for that. I didn't plan to have a break this long but that's how it turned out to be. Anyway, here I am, with that final one, at least before the year is over. Let's give these surveys on Lata's desert island songs a conclusion. Let's have the most difficult of them all. Two changes: 1. You can choose up to 50 songs. (Ha! that's comforting.) 2. Lata's non-film output is now in the mix too. (So if you insist, you can choose 'ai mere vatan ke logo' for that desert island.) You don't need to have participated in any of the earlier surveys to send your entry for this one. It is independent and complete on its own. For those who are familiar with the survey format, and can't wait to start, the survey page is here: http://survey.giitaayan.com/lata/ I will suggest though to read the following rules, guidelines and notes first: * A desert island implies a place where you have no one else and nothing else to do. So you are expected to select scores that appeal to you for their repeat value and solitary listening pleasure among other things. But YMMV. * A short-list is provided on the survey page to help you select your favorites. It is essentially a list of around top 120 songs from each of the four period-based surveys, plus selected non-film solos. * If you want to pick a song that you don't see in the short-list, type it in the box named "Type songs not in the shortlist". * Solos, solos with chorus, or songs where Lata has sung all lines can be submitted. * Combining box 1 and 2, your submission must not exceed 50 songs. * There is no minimum limit. It is important that you submit only your absolute favorites. There is no need to fill in all the slots if you can't find enough desert-island material songs. * The survey page is self-explanatory. Apart from your selections, you need to provide your name and email address. Please use your popular name/alias and a valid email id. * There is a count of songs available to help you know at all times how many songs you have selected and how many more you can. * There is a "Toggle script" link that lets you choose to see the songs in either Nagari (Hindi) or Roman (English) script. * You can search giitaayan for lyrics and stats of some of the songs directly from the survey page; just select the movie name and click giitaayan's icon. * When you submit your entry, you will see a confirmation page with a list of the songs selected by you. Please save the list for your records. * To revise your entry, simply send another entry with same name and email id. All entries except your last one will be discarded. * The tentative last date of accepting submission is November 19, 2010 (Friday). This gives you about three weeks' time. * That's all. Enjoy! Here is the survey URL again: http://survey.giitaayan.com/lata/ Comments and questions are welcome. Looking forward to your participation. Thanks. This was the most massive SurveykshaN exercise on many levels. The
sheer number of songs from a humongous period of over sixty years necessitated that. It was only fair that more people participated in this final Lata survey than any of the earlier ones. I would have been disappointed otherwise. Here are the results. To reiterate the survey question, I asked you to select up to 50 solos sung by Lata for Hindi films or non-film albums, for a desert island scenario. You were presented a short-list of over 500 songs, created using top songs of earlier period-based Lata survey results, but you were free to choose songs from outside the short-list. In my opinion, this particular survey should be thought as a "favorites among favorites" kind of exercise. I don't think it covered the detail to the level that earlier period-based surveys did. And in that sense it was less precise. Because of its broadness, you may see many great songs missing the final list, despite the fact that over an unprecedented 600 songs were selected by participants. But that's Lata for you. It's hard to cover her in one single survey. And that was exactly the point we started with. With that said, let's cherish the songs. I am presenting below some of the top favorites selected by you, for the lack of space here. A much more detailed and complete list is available at the SurveykshaN website at: http://survey.giitaayan.com/lata/ Some highlights ================ * Number of songs selected by two or more participants: 506 * Number of songs getting only one vote each: 115 * Songs selected by... 50% or more participants: None 40% or more participants: 3 25% or more participants: 29 10% or more participants: 170 fewer than 5% participants: 281 * Albums covered by selections: 396 (Films: 389, Non-Film: 7) * Top 10 films (based on cumulative total votes for songs of a film) Guide 136 Woh Kaun Thi 108 Pakeezah 106 Aah 96 Madhumati 94 Parakh 94 Anaarkali 92 Dastak 91 Anuradha 86 Anupama 86 * Top years (based on cumulative total votes for songs of a year) 1966 425 1960 388 1964 349 1951 346 1958 337 1971 337 1953 307 1955 301 1961 298 1962 293 1952 285 1957 284 Participants (152) ==================== डॉ दुर्गाप्रसाद अग्रवाल, Aalok, Abhay, Abhay Phadnis, Abhijit Deonath, Abhijit Mukherjee, Aditya Pant, Afzal A. Results of earlier period-based Lata surveys (and other SurveykshaNs) are also available at the same site. With this, we conclude a series of surveys that started with an idea that if we have to do it (i.e. to create some list of Lata's songs), we should at least put some effort in the process and try to do it well. I don't know if these lists are better than anyone else's. I don't think so. And that was not the idea anyway. But they are certainly more representative and something I can respect and learn from. Thanks again to everyone who participated in this and earlier Lata surveys. Also thanks to the volunteers who helped with the short-list and other documents. Feel free to add your own analysis of the results. Also pass on the results to your forums and communities. If you see any errors, please let me know.
