Daniel Craig takes on 007 mantle

Meet the new Bond
Actor Daniel Craig has been confirmed as the new James Bond.

The English star of gangster film Layer Cake, who arrived at a press conference in London by speedboat, will play a tougher, grittier and darker 007.

"It's a huge challenge. Life is about challenges and this is one of the big ones as an actor," said Craig, 37, who will be the sixth James Bond.

He joked he "had a couple of Martinis" when he got the role. Casino Royale is due to start filming in January.

"We've got an incredible script and that's my first line of attack," he said. "Once I'd read that, I realised that I didn't have a choice. I had to go for it."

He admitted taking the role was a big responsibility but added: "I've just got to step up to the plate and deal with it."

Bond was "a huge iconic figure in movie history and these things don't come along very often", he said.

Director Martin Campbell said the 21st Bond film would be "definitely darker, more character, less gadgets".

Craig told reporters: "Together with Martin, I want to make the best film we can, the most entertaining film we can."

The actor said he was not looking to redefine the role, but added: "It's a question of taking it somewhere maybe where it's never gone before."

Craig said he had received encouragement from predecessor Pierce Brosnan and had tried to think of it "like any other job".

He also admitted there was a danger of being "trapped" by being stereotyped in the role.

You the critic: Write about Bond
But he said: "I'm not allowing myself to think in that way. I'm thinking about the agenda ahead and the agenda ahead is to make the best movie we can."

Producer Michael G Wilson said the film-makers considered more than 200 actors from around the world over two years before settling on Craig.

Neither Q nor Moneypenny will appear, Mr Wilson added, but M will return. However, it was not confirmed whether Dame Judi Dench will play the spy chief.

Producers are now setting their sights on finding a female star to fill what Mr Campbell said would be the "best Bond girl part" ever.

Casino Royale will be an adaptation of author Ian Fleming's first James Bond novel, in which the spy was introduced as a more youthful and cold character than he has been portrayed on film.

I just found out about this guy two days ago on CNN. They did say he was blonde. *ugh* they could have done better, I say. He looks more like the villian of the Bond movies. Who else was their choice? Didnt they find anyone else? Hmmm..

As for my HF time, its been reduced to twice per wk now cuz of crazy amount of work. Hopefully it wont be same now. A little less work is on its way and now HF radio is one great reason to be on HF for as much time as I can.

Btw, before I finish the post, CNN has cool stuff you might wanna check. The galleries are nice.

The new Bond, not to my liking. He's no match to Sean Connery, Pierce Brosnan or for that matter Roger Moore. He'll fizzle out like George Lazenby or Timothy Dalton

"The moment we want to believe something, we suddenly see all the arguments for it, and become blind to the arguments against it."
"Reading made Don Quixote a gentleman, but believing what he read made him mad. "

If it ain't broke, dont fix it.

Pierce Brosnan was just fine.

Not quite like the original Bond (Sean Connery) who when he said " Bond, James Bond" and you knew straightaway that he was the genuine one! However Brosnan was still good enough for a few more movies.

The new guy simply doesnt look the part.

George Lazenby was the worst I reckon. Timothy Dalton was no better either. I've only seen 1 of his Bond films his second n only outing, "License to Kill", and its the less said the better type case.

I must say Brosnan played the role well, I liked him he made his own mark. Roger was just immense. Am gonna part with Sir Sean on this 1 tho ppl. I mean you think Samuel L. Jackson is cool? Ppl, Sean invented coolness!!

Most will tell you that the best Bond film of all time is between Dr. No & Goldfinger, and you know wot? They'd be right to do so... I'd give you those 2 options myself. But my personal favourite is Thunderball, cool basket goes to Luciana Paluzzi (how fit was she btw), when she tells him not to attempt escape again: Strange that may seem but Ive grown accustomed to your face laugh.gif laugh.gif

Anil

He was only contracted 4 four films with the option of a fifth. He's gettin on a bit 4 Bond now. I think Christian Bale wud have been good 4 the part, too young/short 4 Bond maybe?
