Dear Nimii,

My digital collection of classical music is very very limited. However, I'm uploading a 78rpm recording of arguably the finest female singer of all time - Kesarbai Kerkar. You can do a google search and all about her in a lot of classical music sites. However, I'm adding whatever I can remember about her.

She was born in a Goan village - Keri in 1893 & got her initial training from 2 legends - Pandit Ramkrishnabuwa Vaze of the Gwalior Gharana & Ustad Abdul Karim Khan of the Kirana Gharana. But her final & most comprehensive training was from the legendary founder of the Jaipur Atrauli Gharana - Ustad Alladiya Khan. The main traits of this gayaki is - beautifully intricate bandishes in madhyalaya taal, blindingly beautiful taan patterns & stunning breath-control. Kesarbai reigned supreme in the world of lady singers till her retirement in the late 60's. Her contemporaries include her Guru-bahen - Moghubai Kurdikar (Kishoritai's mother), Hirabai Barodekar & Gangubai Hangal. All of them were very very famous but Kesarbai had that 'something' extra in her to reign supreme in the hearts of the audience. She passed away in 1977, (I guess).

Raag Maru-bihag. a beautiful evening raag. Tum To Saath Ho (Lata-Rafi) & Payalwaali Dekhna (Kishore Kumar) are film songs based on the same raag.

Regards-Archie.

Archieda! Wonderful. I am really interested in collecting info on the female singers of Hindustani Classical.

I shall also search for info on other less known singers.

I have selections from all four and can gradually U/L the tracks. But I have very limited knowledge of raagas. nor can I contribute any biographical info. Let me start with Laxmi Shankar, since I have her's on CDs (the others I have to convert from audio-tapes).

Which one do you want me to start with?

Vol 1 : Raagas
Vol 2 : Songs

Cheers!

Nimii-ji:

As for the "Raagas", we'll have to settle for one out of my two Lakshmi Shankar tracks. The second one exceeds 15mb even after using mp3pro and zipping the file. It was over 30 minutes in real-time.

Patha nahin kyoon, jo filmi singers 4 minute mein bayaan kartein hain, wohi baat classical singers saari raat kheenchtey rehtey hain!

Downloading this classical raaga expounded by Lakshmi Shankar will not be easy without broadband.

And will some knowledgeable member enlighten us about the raag?

Cheers!

Having learned my lesson from trying to U/L the complete denouement of a raag, I am now uploading smaller pieces (whew!) rendered by Lakshmi Shankar.

Here's Track 1: "Ab Ke Maadhav".

Nimii-ji:

Aap ka jawaab nahin!

I was sceptical about the interest and response to what Kishore-da referred to as "heavy-duty" music. But I am just amazed by the number of downloads of the Lakshmi Shankar tracks I posted. Apparently we have a large circle of serious music lovers out there.

When I last checked there were no takers for the Fusion Music tracks I posted in SKS. But if you folks would just download and listen to them, I am sure you would enjoy them as "mood music". Do I have to thrust it down your throats? Heh! Heh!

Here's Lakshmi Shankar track 7: Nis din barsat nayn hamaarey

And here's the last of my Lakshmi Shankar tracks.

Track 8: "Saiyyan na jaao".
