What about last meal you had? Wanna talk? Or should we modify this to what you been munching on? Or may be sipping on? Open to ideas and suggestions

Why do I sense a veiled attempt to answer the age old question, what shall we have for dinner today?
Punjabi Chole (channa), chapathi, and of course no meal is complete without Patak's Green Chile Relish (hari mirch ka achaar).

Baingan ka bhartha (from the garden) and chapathi (ofc achaar as usual).
We only have Papa Murphy's in my area. They are so so, I'd rather get the fresh pizza dough ball from Trader Joe's with their Pizza Sauce and make it myself. I've heard great things about Papa John's though!
Marci you must try that http://www.amazon.com/Pataks-Chilli-Pickle-10oz/dp/B000JSQKNE/ref=sr_1_1/103-3636855-5540644?ie=UTF8&s=gourmet-food&qid=1192588863&sr=1-1 once, it's a bit hard to find though, even in desi stores (funnily the american grocery store has it, lol), not as popular as the others I guess. But everyone I have forced to try it loves it. Some gora friends even spread it on toast! Even Cost Plus had their own version for a while but they discontinued it.

An excellent thread; interesting to read different tastes.
A minor suggestion; would it be better to change the phrase 'last supper' in the sub heading?

I am actually hooked on to Papa's "Personal Pizza with two toppings (chicken and onion)". Since its navratri time so no chicken for me.
How is thin crust pizza? Is it good? For some reason I do not like thin crust. I tried that at domino's and it wasn't great. One pizza that I want to try is called mariachi pizza by Donato's. I have heard great reviews about that. It has pineapple as one of the topping

Well the soil is very rich here (and the weather typically moderate) so lucky on that, everything tastes so much better from the garden, especially key ingredients for turka like tomatoes (very khata this time around) and mirch. Downside is you end up cooking same sabzis a lot!
I tried a few jams long time ago at Trader's wasn't too keen on them, not sure if I tried the raspberry, will have to do. I usually stick to that Smucker's Simply Fruit spreads or other 100% fruit ones. I love strawberry, apricot, and raspberry. Once in a while I get lucky and the gourmet market has the british Robertson's Silver Shred (lemon marmalade) which is very yummy yet so hard to find. It's all very yummy on Trader's sourdough bread or their toasting bread, or Thomas' Sourdough English Muffins.

I figured out 'mirch' is green chilli.

Hari Ram
Bitter Gourd aka Karela
Turka is Punjabi word for the masala base you make before the veggies go in (cumin, corinader seeds, garlic, ginger, green pepper, red pepper, onions, all the spices, and depending on the dish, tomatoes). At some Punjabi restaurants you will see on the menu Turka Dal - this is Lentils that have been curried with Turka.

True, but I am sure you do get real taste of veggies with home grown stuff. My mom, when she was here last time told that there is no taste in veggies here. I guess we have lost those taste buds by now so we do not feel it.
We used to get mixed kissan's fruit jam but once we fund ant inside it so that was it. lol

Sichuan is a central China province (Capital City Chengdu) and is the hot (spicy) food capital of China. Their breakfasts are served hot (Chilli hot) too. There are a lot of restaurants every where and extremely popular serving only Sichuan Cuisine. What I meant when I said Sichuan Dinner was we went to one of these Sichuan restaurants for dinner.
The fried chicken takes the cake, little cubes of deep fried spicy chicken in a bowl full of fired dried chillies, you basically have to do a chicken hunt amongst the peppers, and I mean the bowl contains almost a Kg of chillies. Never seen this dish outside China. Actually one should not venture into one of these restaurants if one can not handle chillies.
They also specialize in "hot pot" (a boiling pot with lots of spices and peppers in the middle of the table). You are given your raw meats and vegetables and you cook your own. and use sesame and peanut sauce as the dip. Could be a problem in summer though, with all that heat and the spicy fumes around.
Anyhow, this cuisine is my favourite amongst all Chinese cuisines, maybe because the taste is on par with our curries.

He's actually discussed desi food and masalas quite a few times, he eventually posts about the recipe he talks about too online, only they are treating it as appetizer, where for most of us I think it would be a main dish:
http://www.kcbs.com/Narsai-s-Sauteed-Eggplant-Appetizer/1130335 I make bhartha different then most and to me that recipe is missing lots of good stuff, lol. (But I can't say I like that restaurant either, so, lol!) He had mentioned in his segment how eggplant and tomato seems to be a universal pairing (ex. Eggplant Parmesan) and I couldn't help think so are Spinach and Corn Flour (Greens & Cornbread or Saag & Makhi Di Roti) and Rice and Beans.
Anyhow I had a bean tostada from my favorite Mexican restaurant today. The foodie guy on the news radio station today discussed baingan ka bhartha, was interesting hearing a gora's perspective on it. Had Round Table's Wombo Combo pizza, all kinds of goodies on that one.
Really, over in California do they discuss that on radio shows? wow.
That is the hardest part of making bhartha here in usa, well here is some thing I had used in past. Use Pressure cooker to soften egg plant and then its all same.
Gas ki safai bhi nahi karni pade gi baad maiQUOTE
Roast eggplants slowly over an open flame or under a broiler

To me it must be roasted either via flame or in broiler other wise you don't get that roasted taste, I'm very particular, the broiler in the oven works fine, you just need to put the eggplants in foil and place them on the top-most rack, using the broil function of the oven, turning them evenly until skins burn off pretty much.
Squash sabzi and roti/chapathi today.

Marc....Ragi is a type of millet and is called Finger Millet in English and is red in colour so also called Red Millet. In Hindi it is called Madua and Nachni in Marathi. In south, it is mixed with rice and boiled and after which it is made into balls..called Raagi balls. Instead of rice, many prefer this as as it is considered healthy and Yes, it does tastes better..

Hey Venkat, nice to know that you were here in the US. Which part of the US were you located that time and which year, if I may ask ? I am currently in the San Francisco bay area, California.
And I am strict veggie myself ! I know how tough it gets ! I am glad that there are plenty of places (Indian and non-Indian too !) here in bay area that have some or other veggie stuff !

I'll love to call myself an expert...all I do is google a dish I like + recipe and voila!
But its funny....Chicken Kiev at a decent restaurant costs $25-30 per head. I made enough for 5 helpings and the ingredients couldn't have cost more than $15-20 and it was as tasty as a restaurant (minus the fancy decor)....it was a revelation calculating the gross margin of restaurants!!!

Looks like I need to come to Australia for some Chicken Kiev and Fried Baramundi fish!
Wish your wife a speedy recovery.
Hope after all delicacies being cooked she doesn't make you the permanent cook!
Yes, restraunts really make a killing. Perhaps most of their money goes to their decor, maintenance and to pay staff.
I had Khichdi, papad, cholas and roti with curd.

Faraaj73, how do you do lahori style of fish
Marcilo
You fry it instead of baking. Basically, marinate fish pieces with ginger-garlic paste, red chili flakes, onion flakes (if available), salt and a little garam masala. Leave for 30 minutes then fry (not deep-fry) for approx 10 minutes on medium-high heat - turning over at least 1-2 times. Be careful the pieces don't break. Now, take the fish pieces out and put in a flat serving dish. Add large-cut onions and big pieces of tomato (and chopped green chilli) to the same oil in which you fried the fish (and a little more red chili flakes if you want). Cook for 10 minutes on medium flame and pour the concoction on the fish in the bowl. Squeeze lemon juice on top and add mint or parsley leaves.
Look, this is just a broad formula. Make it 1-2 times and you'll know how much spice your taste buds prefer, how much onion-tomato masala you want to add, whether you like mint or parsley...you'll find variations of this formula in countless restaurants throughout punjab. Its always called Lahori machhi or Lahore-style and no two places taste the same.
By the way, my non-desi friends were shocked to find us crazy desis adding spices to fish! For them the concept was alien. But when they tasted it, they really liked it. None left-over
I have four days break due to Easter, so yesterday I cooked a full pizza for the first time (including the base) + sauce and toppings. The toppings were black olives, red peppers, chicken (small pieces) and mozzarella. It was tasty but I definitely see room for improvement. The base was too thick (almost as much as pizza hut) and I plan a really thin base next time, although getting it in a round or rectangular shape is not easy!!! I'll also add different toppings, but include the black olives which were great.

I went for a 4 hour hike in the Blue Mountains with my son. After that we stopped at a very well-reviewed conservation hut restaurant and both ate obscene amounts of really well done food because we were famished.
I had Roast Turkey sandwiches with cranberry sauce on this amazing thick turkish bread which is soft but rich and a large vanilla milkshake. My son demolished a plate of fish and chips (pretty impressive for a 6 yo) + chocolate milkshake.

Thats what I thought when I was ordering!
I ordered two sandwiches and was about to order dessert when the lady asked if someone else was joining. She said our sandwiches are pretty big, order dessert after seeing how it goes. If one fills you up, you can pack the second. I finished both and didn't order dessert, but honestly these were the largest sandwiches I've ever eaten or seen! One would generally make for a filling meal.

Pizza, thin crust and diet coke for dinner

Made a pizza base of wheat flour (atta used for chappati) instead of white flour. Wheat flour is a healthier option and in my opinion just as tasty. For toppings had a minced meat-bolognese sauce followed by cheese topped with spanish black olives. It was really good.....I'm beginning to think restaurants are a scam!

Put fish fillet on top to cover the spinach, added olive oil, lemon juice extract, salt, black peppers and slices of red chilli (large cuts not flakes) all on top of the fish and closed the foil. Put the packet in the oven at 190 degrees for 30 minutes. Open it, remove the red chilli and eat. Its really simple but damn tasty!

Faraaj,
Momo is basically a dish supposed to be originally from Nepal/Tibet/Sikkim. It is made with a stuffing (vegetable, chicken etc) wrapped in wheat flour dough and then usually steamed. It is supposed to be quite healthy due to the fact that its steamed although some people also like fried ones. Its usually served with a spicy chutney.
I am attaching a picture of it for your reference.
I also found a recipe in the Nepali way for it here:-
http://newafood.blog.com/2006/7/
The meatball sandwich is what they call Meatball Marinara. Here they usually give it as a sub and one can convert it to a meal (or even a salad) by adding some more money. I am attaching a pic of the sub as well!

They do resemble the chinese dumpling jiaozi but momos are native of Tibet. The refugees have of course taken it to many other places like Nepal, Sikkim etc. (also Delhi, Dharmshala among other places). In traditional Tibet staple being barley flour (called tsampa) it is used for the flour (instead of wheat) and its heavier than the dumpling.

Not a food court Hildebrand. Food courts would have subway, pizza hut, mcdonalds, kfc, indian, chinese, thai, salad bar, lebanese, greek and italian. Thats about it.
I'm talking about proper sit-down restaurants with varied menus and chefs (and owner) from that country and specialising in that cuisine. Sydney is a melting pot of different cultures and you can find many, many cuisines here. I don't think such exotic fare would be available at food courts anywhere.
The only one I found missing strangely was Afghan food, which I do enjoy once in a while when available.....
