Hi,

Let me start new topic.... Tell me your favourite song of Rafi Sahab. I know it is not easy for us but PHIR BHI KOSHISH TO KAR SAKTE HAI NAA....I hope no one will try to escape from it.

Hi Chitralekha,

I asked about this movie to one video parlour in Baroda (This is one of the reputed Video parlour in the city, and I purchase oldies from time to time here), They did not have this movie and when I insist them to have this, they phoned to their agent in Mumbai and asked for the movie but unfortunetaly, the agent doesn't have this movie. Owner of the video vision told me that if u do not get movie from us then u will not get it from all over the video.

So does anyone tell me from where should i get this movie?

I was really wondering that no one mentioned my favourite song in the list of their fav songs.....but finally the last post of Asokji I found it...It is 'Tere mere sapne ' from Guide.....It is the best romantic song I ever heared....I like it too much...What a song!!!...I don't think any one can repeat like this one...

Other fav songs are

this is my very first post here, hope to have a great relationship with u all

I think that it wud be the toughest job on earth to pick ONE (just one) song out of so many jewels, miracles that people know as Rafi saabs' songs. I also noticed that some of my fav songs are not pointed out by anyone, like
1) Pathar Ke Sanam -- I dont think any one else can ever express pain as done in this song
2) Teri Aankhon Ke Siva -- Very romantic
3) Mere Dushman -- Rafi saab did great justice to some outstanding lyrics
4) Woh Jab Yaad Aaye -- Great example of unmatched pair of Rafi saab & Lata ji
5) Yeh Mera Prem Patr Padhke -- Most romantic
6) Chaudvin Ka Chand Ho -- no words to describe this song

and the list can go on and on and on till my life time is over....

How nice u r SS....U like all 26000 odd songs even though u did not hear most of them.......I think I might have heared a maximum of 500 SOngs....out of which I think 200 songs will be there I can remember...and most of them I like.....Actullay this topic must be changed to select most favourite 25 songs of Rafi.....Well SS can you specify exactly there are how many Hindi film songs Rafi has sung?....It will be also good if you tell the number of songs(Hindi film) by other artist as well...just for a comparison.

I have said before that it took me 10 years of hard work to get 10,000 Rafi songs. I have also proved by logic that Rafisaab has definitely sang more than 26000 songs.

Mayawan, you can call me a die hard fan but I love every word of Rafisaab. To select top 25 songs would be impossible but I am trying this impossible task.

In my humble opinion as a Rafian since the last 40 years, selecting just one song is just impossible. How can one compare one great tune/lyrics/rendering with another song which has its own special appeal on the same unique merits!

The devotionals "Man tarpat" and "O duniya ke rakhwaley" cannot be compared with the romantic "Zindagi bhar nahin bhoolegi" or "Ehsaan tera hoga", the patriotic "Kar chaley hum fida" and 'Sarfaroshi ki tamanna" cannot be compared to the classicals "Man mora baawra" or "Duniya na bhaaye", the melodious numbers "Chaley gayey hum" or "Din dhal jaaye", the plaintive "Tootey hoovey khwabon ne" and "Yaad na jaaye beetey dinon ki", the catchy "Tumsa nahin dekha" and "Pukarta chala hoon main", the meditative "Mun re thoo kahey na dheer dharey" and "Din dhal jaaye".

Each and every one of these songs --- and hundreds of others --- are precious gems, each with a rare quality of its own!

Including numerous lesser known songs:
"Sau baar janam lenge"
"Yeh waadiyan yeh fizaayen"
"Terey pyaar ne mujhe ghum diya"
"Jaaney bahaar husn tera bemisaal hai"
"Kehdo koi na karey yahaan pyaar"
"Chal ood ja re panchi"
"Kahaan ja raha hai"
"Subha na aayi, shaam na aayi"
"Ik haseen shaam ko"
"Raha gardishon mein hardam"
(I could go on and on listing such wistful numbers......)

The yardstick I've applied in choosing two of my "favourite" Rafi songs (not just one, mind you) is based on what really amounts to one factor : Does it appeal to me as much, every time I hear it? Do I, perhaps, appreciate it more, every time I hear it? Does the song strike a chord in my heart, each time I hear it?

By that yardstick, my favourite songs of Rafi saheb are:
1) "Zindagi bhar nahin boolegi woh barsaat ki raat"
2) "Aap ke haseen rukh"

Similarly, for Lata's songs:
"Aap ki nazron ne samjha" and
"Yeh shaam ki tanhaiyyan".

Subaha Na Aaayi... what a wonderful song! I believe Rafisaab didn't charge a paisa for it, as the producer/MDs were in financial trouble. I have an Illustrated Weekly article (published in the early 1990s) which lists many such songs which Rafisaab did for unknown MDs or MDs in trouble without charging money, or charging only token fees. I'd post it up when I do get around to keying it in.

for me, everything rafi saab belted out is good, but 2 numbers, which i can only describe rafi saabs singing as magical, are the live versions of 'zindagi bhar nahin' and 'mere mehboob thujhe,meri mohabat ki kasam'.

absolutely breath taking, i dunno how he did it, but as i have always said, his live versions excelled the original versions by far.

Rafi-saab has so many great songs that I think I'll never be bored or disappointed, until I die. This man has so many brialliant songs that I don't find time to listen to other singers. I'm just addicted to his voice.

For example: I'm listening to "Ye raat hai pyaasi pyaasi" now for several days in a row, with my CD's repeat-button on. And you know something,

I enjoy every single time I listen to it.

I would love to do that --- but, i don't have it ! I happened to hear it, a long time ago on World Space. It was so beautiful -- i just had to jot the lines down, in the hope that on day i would get it on a disc --- unfortunately, no success ! But i still remember the melody, to this day. Someone once said ''Heard melodies are sweet, but unheard melodies are sweeter''. That's how it is with me.

I would love to do that --- but, i don't have it ! I happened to hear it, a long time ago on World Space. It was so beautiful -- i just had to jot the lines down, in the hope that on day i would get it on a disc --- unfortunately, no success ! But i still remember the melody, to this day. Someone once said ''Heard melodies are sweet, but unheard melodies are sweeter''. That's how it is with me.

I love the way Rafi Saab voices the word -- 'muhobbat'.

And the expression in the lines -- 'Tumhen Jis Ne Bhi Dekha Hai... Judaai Seh Nahin Sakta'.
In the line 'Muhobbat Ka Ujaala Phailta... Jayega Raahon Par' -- Listen to the way he pronounces 'Phailta'.
Rafi Saab puts so much emphasis and weight on the word, that it adds a certain 'something' to the meaning that the poet wants to convey -- no one else would have the imagination or the voice to carry it off !

LegendRafi ji mentioned "Aise To Na Dekho...", its also one of my very favourite romantic songs of all time and I rate it as one of Rafi's most spectacular songs ever. It has everything, smoothness, ease, strength and confidence, it is a dazzling composition.

My other favourite is the other gem from the same film and I think one of Rafi saab's best ghazals 'Kahin Bekhayal Hokar...', whenever I listen to this song it gives me goosebumps, only Rafi saab could have done justice to it....the tune is very crafty.....a haunting song.

The SDB-Rafi combination was truly one of the greatest associations in HFM history. Out of all the male singers SDB used, his songs for Rafi saab stand out from the rest.

But, it certainly is NOT a 'knock-off', as what's practised in today's times.

Madanmohan was clearly inspired by the Sajjad composition -- that's obvious !

Patthar ke sanam ......there have been many singers who have made cover versions of this song but listen to Rafi saab each word will "pierce" through your heart :-(

Here are my 5 favorites:

1. TERE MERE SAPNE - Sweetness, Sophestication, melody at it's very best!

2. AISE TO NA DEKHO - Absolutely intoxicating!

3. TUMHARI ZULF KE SAAYE MEIN - The emotions are beautifully rendered.

4. DOOR REHKAR NA KARO BAAT - what can I say!

5. KOI SAAGAR DIL KO BEHLATA - The helplessness, the anger & the frustrations of the protagonist are all beautifully expressed in Rafi Sahab's voice.

6. AB KYA MISAAL DOON - The whole song is like a dream. The vocals, the words and the music are seamlessly stitched into one complete gem. Notice, how Rafi Sahab wraps every word with such sweetness that their is no edge to any of them. What a song!

Of course each of this song has brilliant music as well as lyrics.

Madanmohan loved this song too, when he heard it for the first time. He even rang up C.Arjun to say so !

The interlude music is captivating. It has a slight Middle Eastern touch.

According to the composer, the song lacked a certain 'something' after it was composed.

Rafi Saab decided to embellish it with an 'alaap' -- and the song was magically transformed into the gem that it is now !

Tujhi Ko Teri Kahani Sunaane Aya Hoon...

I have no idea why i love this song so much. It's just that whenever i hear it, it transports me into a wistful mood.

Everthing about it is soul-stirring. There is nothing complicated about this song, yet it leaves a powerful effect. Rafi Saab's voice is still raw -- and i love that.

Words don't mean a thing before the intensity of emotions expressed by Rafi Saab, in this song.

It will always be one of my eternal favourites. I've lost count of the times that i must have listened to it, yet i am still under its spell -- i don't see the spell ever getting broken either.

There was a not so popular song that I had on a cassette by HMV (Rare Hits of Mohd Rafi) from "Adventures of Robin Hood". I used to love it back then

This song is one of my eternal favourites !

The way Rafi Saab renders it, you can almost reach out and feel his very soul -- that's how soul-stirring, his dew-fresh voice has even on a lay listener !

Everything about this composition is inspiring -- to remind us that we are put on this planet to do good to others.
I wonder, just how is it, that Sahir could preach without making it sound like a sermon ?
Well, not everyone is gifted as he was !
