Hamara Forums _ Geeta Dutt _ Geeta Dutt Sings For Shakeela, The Aar Paar And Cid Girl

Posted by: parag_sankla Jan 13 2009, 01:27 AM

Looking at the career of Shakeela, the song "Babuji dheere chalna" must be the most popular song filmed on this beautiful actress. She seems to have acted in about 50 odd films from 1949 till 1963.

Shakeela was a beautiful actress with limited acting abilities. She was the moll in Guru Dutt's Aar Paar (1954) and then went on to become Dev Anand's heroine in the film CID (1956). In spite of such successful films, she never became a top class heroine.

Its surprising to find that Geeta ji sang a good no of songs for films starring Shakeela. One can confirm if these songs are indeed filmed on her or not, only after seeing the videos. Yet, here is a list of films where Shakeela has acted and Geeta ji has sung song (s)

Baraat (1960)
Dr. Shaitan (1960)
Guest House (1959)
School Master (1959)
Naag Padmini (1957)
Paristan (1957)
C.I.D. (1956)
Malika (1956)
Aar-Paar (1954)
Khushboo (1954)
Lal Pari (1954)
Armaan (1953)
Shahenshah (1953)

The same year, another film Armaan (1953) starring Dev Anand and Madhubala was released. Shakeela played the role of second heroine here. There are 2 very beautiful solos of Geeta ji in this film, not sure filmed on whom. The music was composed by the legendary S D Burman sahab and the lyrics were penned by his then favorite lyricist Sahir sahab.

Unfortunately the yesteryear actress Shakeela's name resembles with a new lady on the South Indian cinema. When one searches for the pics of Shakeela (or Shakila for that matter), one sees only horrifying pics of this new lady.

Here is another B & W pic of the pretty Shakeela

Since my entire song collection is only on my Windows based desktop (and no songs on my macbook), I was going to share this song sometime later..

Thanks for the initiative HB.

BTW, this song has a special mention in the book. Haimanti ji writes : In contrast to her (Geeta ji's) songs with OP, where she is stressing on the words (Babuji dheere chalna for example), here is a song (Kah rahi hain dhadakane pukar kar) where Geeta almost whispers the words. She matches the softness of the velvet voice of Talat mahmood and the song is an enchanting beauty.

Cheers
Parag

Hmm. When velvet meets velvet, the effect has to be enchanting! (The effect with the other velvet voice G.M. Durrani is similar).

Wah wah kya baat kahin hain!

Another soft and sweet song that comes to my mind is "Raat hain arman bhari aur kya suhani raat hain" from the film Sangam (1950), composed by Ram Ganguly and penned by S H Bihari. What a lovely melody!

Incidentally, I have read somewhere on RMIM that Ram Ganguly personally thought that Geeta ji had more versatile and melodious voice compared to her contemporary singers. I don't know many songs of Ram Ganguly sung by Geeta ji. In fact, there is very little information available on this composer except for this famous film with Raj Kapoor.

earthmusic mentions as many as seven songs Geeta ji with him. Just have a look here:-

(Notice my tweaking of the software system. Next when you want geeta duets with a particular md just change the mdid.)

That was the board software bungling up my paste. You can see her work for lyricists similarly.
For example, songs of hers written by shailendra can be got like this:-

www.earthmusic.net/hindi-film-songs.php?singerid[]=gd&lrid[]=shailendra
Change the lyricist id and you can get her combination with others as well.
