Don't know many. Notice someone has added Asha to the list!!! She has sung a lot in the language but still....
Rafisaab in the men. And Noor Jehan and Shamshad Begum in the women. Everyone knows I adore NJ but the more I hear of Shamshad the more I like her. And am esp fond of the few Punjabi songs I have heard. She is such a natural. It is sad that with the change of style she lost out almost completely. I find her wonderful in whichever genre of song she did. True her voice was not as high pitched as the Mangeshkars but otherwise as a singer in no way does she fall short. In natural enthusiasm and 'josh' she was a cut above most I feel. There is that feeling of hearing it 'live' sort of when U listen to her. Not rehearsed. Dunno if I make sense. |

Zubeida Khanum has sung in Punjabi? I'm only familiar with her urdu work and its spectacular. Inade kisi punjabi geet da example ul karo please.
as for fav singers, how about jagjit and chitra? Their rendition of Shiv Kumar Batalvi's poetry is as poignant as anything i've ever heard. In fact, Jagjit reused a lot of tunes from his ghazals in rendering punjabi numbers e.g., pareshan raat saari hai, sitaron tum to so jao sukoote-marg taari hai, sitaron tum to so jao became gama di raat lammi hai, ja mere geet lamme ne na phaidi raat mukdi e, na mere geet mukde ne. Also interesting to compare his version of "mainu tera shabab le baitha" with Asa Singh Mastana's- both bring their own unique style to the lovely poetry of Batalvi. Hmmm.... now im inspired to start a new thread on the topic -manoneet |
