This is a very commonly used instrument in a lot of Film songs of the 50s. This is the first time I have seen a player issue a recording in Classical Hindustani using this instrument. There is a body of Carnatic using this instrument. U Srinivas uses an "electric" mandolin.

Thank you nandiji very much for this albums. I didnt knew that there is another person who plays mandolin other than Srinivas(south).
The only north Indian who I knew plays mandolin extraordinarily is the Great Sajjad Hussain. He has given a few mandolin solo concerts in Mumbai and in Calcutta. Hope some generous soul has it and would share for us.. |

Here is a tiny snippet of Sajjad Hussain's Mandolin playing. Sajjad Hussain Mandolin MutyalaMuggu mp3 4.56mb 4:58 128kbps nandiji, There is one more film where Sajjad plays mandolin. Again a film by Great director Bapu, but this time it is not plain music, but it comes as a background. It is from the film Gorantha Deepam. Mandolin in the background sounds simply superb. Actually he came all the way to Chennai to give a classical music concert in 1982 on the request of Bapu, I am looking for that gr8 Treasure. |
