Guru,Rafi saab,Lataji,Asha ji has sung so many songs in this language.
So,lets start a class on teaching this language.Believe me its a very very easy language 2 pick up.
js
Yaa... my introduction to this language started with...
Roshgulloh bishon meetha
I am for it
N
Its,
rosogolla bhisan mishti
Mishti means sweet
N
Ye lo Unni learns all the right phrases!! I am hope you use it on the right person
N

tch tch!! Iss rang badalti duniya mein.. insaan ki neeyat...
Lo karlo baat.. Blame it on the WP thread hahahaha
Ok, we are moving away from the real discussion of this thread :E
Btw is there any site where english can be translated to bengali and vice versa!!
N ?
task for 2day.Tell me what is meant here.Specially for UNNI.
BANGALI MEYERA KHUB SUNDARI HOY
PLZ, don't disturb me - i'm trying to learn English
*Thud* Unni I didnt know that !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
N
I'll be very much present here jayantda .....
Have not heard many of GURU's bengali numbers ....
But now this section will help me in learning BENGALI
rgds,
Hey,,,,,,,,Not sure....whether this is like "Waking up a sleeping gaint" or something...A post coming into this thread after ages, I suppose....But I'm also interested in Learning Bengali.......Actually me interested in learning lots of new languages......like that very much.......So thought........why not start off with Bengali........will also begin on others soon enough........So........Any takers for a new student out here???? Do reply!!!!!!
dun forget abt other legends like
BEGUM AKHTAR
MEHDI HASSAN
MUKESH
TALAT MEHMOOD
Wow!!!! Mandrake.....that was One Helluva effort!!!! Hope I make some progress atleast......with my learning of Bengali out here.........Sure the sweet language's gonna come well in handy.......Excitedly waiting for someone to 'start' the teaching!!!!
I mean......I dunno whether I'll enough time to go to classes........definitely will give it a thought......as and when I get a bit free.......But......as of now......looking for a decent start here at HF.....
BENGLA is the second sweetest language after FRENCH
Hmmm......So...the classes for the second sweetest language....not yet begun......Still waiting!!!!
Amon toh aami shikhechhi, kintu bhalo boltey paari na... practice jey neyi aamaake
(That way, I have learnt, but cannot speak it well... don't have enough practice)
Nimii, spent a solid year studying Bangla (also acted in a Bengali play in front of an all-bengali crowd). Joined the course JUST to understand what Kishore was singing so beautifully.
WOW THAT IS GREAT MANDRAKE!! To understand GURU songs u actually spent a year learning Bangla! AMAZING!
HATS OFF TO YOU
n
Wow!!!! Mandrake.......thanks for starting off my lessons in Bengali.....YES.... Tumi Aamaar Bondhu!!!!! Excitedly awaiting the next lessons!!!!!!
well...
how about starting the day with..
Aaj Shokalta Ki Shundor... meaning the morning is so wonderful today
Dorja ( Door)
Janla( Windows)
see u got to know some words in bengali
WOW....Good progress.....Bhalo Bhalo.....(does that mean nice???) HEHE.....Just trying my hand at something new.......please contniue the classes.....
Hey!!!! That is so very different usage of the same word in two different languages .......from two different extremes (West and East) of the same country.......Really surprising to note the same word used both in a very positive sense as well as a negative term....Guess what would be the case if Sundar (Shundor) might have carried some other meaning in Marathi!!!!
Ehhh Bondhu......Kee Korche??? Where are the next lessons?????
Amaar Bondhu??? Where are you???? (Great rhyming na???? I must try my hand at Bengali Poetry!!!! )
Next lessons long pending....(this is not Bheeshon Bhaalo.....)
OK GKS, here you go:
Aami thaaki = I stay/live
Aami Kolkaataay thaaki = I live in Kolkata
Aami Mumbaitey thaaki = I live in Mumbai
Aami Bangalorey thaaki = I live in Bangalore
The rule is simple:
Names ending in 'aa' will have an 'aay' as suffix (pronounced like the letter 'I')
Names ending in 'ee' will have 'tey' as suffix (soft 'tey' as in rishtey/naatey)
Names ending in 'uh' (as in Bangalore/Nagpur/Gangtok) will have 'ey' as suffix (same 'ey' as in risht-ey/naat-ey)
So where do you live?
Oh WOWWW!!!! My first Bangla Grammar lessons!!! Thanks so much Mandrake!!! Good going..... Bheeshon Bhaalo...
Btw.....Aami Mumbaitey Thaaki
Tumi Pan Mumbaitey Thaaki na?? (I know first two words are Marathi......couldn't get that sentence in a better manner... ) But this is how I plan to learn.....by trying out.....(the permutation-combination technique;)) So....keep correcting me.....and start giving more regular lessons...(as today)
And Nimmi.....going by your post on Guru's song.....and Mandrake's translation.......it should mean...."Live..O..Live.....O Live Live..(Re)"??? (Or was it something to do with the philosophical context of 'Live and Let Live' ????
Does any1 know what is the SCRIPT(lipi) of BENGLA language?
i have asked many educated ppl they were confused.
link would be appreciated.
Oh wow!!!! This seems to be a very interesting language.....I'm enjoying every moment of my learning experience....
So....Mandrake Bondhu, Tumi O Mumbaitey Thaako?
Humble_Rafi Delhitey Thaaki....
Delhi Bhaalo Shahar.....Mumbai Bheeshon Bhaalo Shahar???
(My experiments with Truth....er.....the Permutation-Combination technique continues..... )
Good going GKS
But HR is he=shey
so HR thaaki nahi, thaake
Oh yes.....Sorry....I forgot that 'shey' rule.... ...... HF Delhitey Thakey..
Btw......was that sentence on the 'bhaalo shahar right in any way???
Aamar baadi Chhoto aache.... Chhoto O Shundor!!!!
Yes......What I wanted to mean was 'Small, but beautiful too.....'......or 'small & beautiful'....And with the existing list of words I had learnt from you....the 'closest' I could get was 'Small, ALSO Beautiful' (Chhoto O Shundor) Hehehehe.....But I knew you would very well understand my problem on reading it.... hehehe Didn't know the word for "AND"......and Mishti means Sweet, I guess?
Khoob Practice Chaaee....
You are getting better, and how
mishti = sweet , that's right.
Remember a simple pronunciation rule:
when 2 'o' come in a word (bodo), the first o is pronounced as in 'clock', and the second as in 'cloak'.
Come to think of it, all o's that are second vowels go the way of 'cloak'.
Shundor, bheeshon...
getting it?
(Hey some real Bongo bondhus pls take over from here )
GKS - how will u pronounce 'bongo' and 'bondhu' now?
Wow!!!! Great going!!! Today seems to be my marathon day in leanring Bangla....Maximum learning today!!! Thanks...and keep it coming....
I guess in Bongo...the first 'O' will go the way of clock and the second (the one after G...) will go the way of cloak.....Hence...Pronunciation very similar to 'Bodo'..... Will be Bongo...(the way we pronounce the percussion instrument of the same name... )
Bondhu...well.....has only one 'O'...which also happens to be the first vowel.....hence......will go the 'clock' way... .......
Aami barobar aache???
Eehh Bondhu??? Kee Korche??? Bangla Forum Khoob Chupp Aache....???
ooo Maaaaaaaa!!!!
ghor aondhokor ....
ekta marathi bodhu bangla teach korchee!!!!!
o bangla bondhu jon...tomar ki hobo...e to tumaka out korchee!!!
aami jachchi
shubho ratri
Heyyyyy Divya !!!!
Pls rescue ME from this ondhokor!!!!
Why don't YOU continue pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease???
Ehh Mandrake!!!! Hamein Is 'Ghor Ondhokaar' Mein Akele Chodke Jaa rahe ho????? Yeh Saraasal Naa-insaafi hai!!! Not Fair!!!
Relax GKS !!!
Even though I may not be too well qualified, I can safely say Divya is no better
Pls read her post. She calls me Marathi BODHU!!!
Bodhu = bride
and 'teach korchee'???? That's 'I teach'!!
She should have said 'teach korchhey'.
How can I leave you in the hands of such a person?
(though let me confess right here that it is a typo. Bondhu is what she meant)
That inspires me to the next lesson:
Aami kori = I do
Tumi koro
Shey korey
Aamraa kori
Tomra koren
Shey koren
Tumi kee kori GKS?
Tumi kee kaaj kori? (kaaj = work)
Aami engineer. Tumi?
nm nokki kosho kosho lolu aale?
Aani konala?
Ekhaane (ithey) shogley oshroo-ch aahet
Divya, didn'tcha know that I was an honest person?
Confessions come easy to me
But you said 'goodnight, I am going' and you came back???
To check on me?
Bad girl
Theek hai, iss baar maaf kar diya. (Kya karen, kahin e-mail bomb bhej diya toh? )
Divya, pls pls pls help to continue this thread na...
Mandrake Dada....Aamhi Management Graduate Aacche..... Aar As of now Kaahi Kaaj Naahi Kori.....As of now Kaaj Shodhi..... (searching for work.....)
Btw.....Aap aur NM kya khichdi pakaa rahe hain???
I dunno Why I ALWAYS end up looking like a lone fool out here????
GKS, not a lone-fool, but a genuinely interested guy
arey kisne kaha ki aap lone-fool ho ... hum hain na aap ka saath nibhane ko..!!
Accha.....toh yeh baat hai Mandrake??? Now I will have to start looking for the 'Difference in meanings' between "Lone Fool" and "Genuinely interested guy" Hehehe...... (thought both were the same out here..... )
Haan.....Divyanjali.....saath nibhaane ka waada karne ke liye bahut shukriya!!! Bas..aap hi ke bharose hain ham......
All are CHATTERJI, BANNERJI, MUKHERJI
But no ENERGY
Wow......that was some learning for me after a loong time......thanks so much Friend.....plss keep the lessons coming!!! Tumi amaar bondhu!!!
Nischoi ami tomar bondhu...
Here Nischoi means Sure
wah..some more in this bangla thread..sahi hai bhidu sahi hai..
ab to GKS ko bahut sare tutor mil gaye..
he must be a happy person now....
well u know.. assamese and bangla are quite similar..if u know bangla, then u can learn assamese with some little effort.
Well All r very good Teachers, nice topic and nice discussions. But 1 minute ...
I want to say something. The spelling "Ahomiya" is not correct. Correct spelling
Is "Asomiya". I have to say about 3 letters. They r "Sa", "Sha" and "Ha" ..
For the words "Asomiya"(Many people write "Asamiya" also ) the letter "Sa" is
Used and not "Sha" or "Ha". So Spelling u know but in Assamese it is pronounced
As "Akhamiya" but in Bengali it is "Ashamiya" ....
The words which use "Ha", "Sa" and "Sha" r respectively ...
Hari, Hiranandani(A place in Bombay), Haaraami(Haraami), Himalaya,
Hooglee(A place) etc ... Sabadhan(In assamese, pronounced as Haabadhaan but
In Bengali pronounced as "Shaabdhaan" and written as Sabdhan), Saagar(In assamese
"Haagar" and in Bengali "Shaagar"), Sangbadik or Saangbaadik ( In Assamese
It is "Haangbaadik, in Bengali it is "Shaangbaadik. Which is Journalist ), Samikaran( In A it is Homikaran and
In B it is Shomikaran. Samikaran=Equation ), Samaadhaan( In A
It is Hamaadhaan and in B it is Shamaadhaan. Samaadhaan=Solution) ... etc
Shaanti(In A it is Haanti and in B it is Shaanti), Shri( It is Sri both in A and in B ),
Shrutalipi( pronounced as Srutalipi. Which means Dictation ) .. etc ..
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now another point .. Sorry if u r getting bored but This is how we differentiate the
Spelling and Pronunciation..
Somebody wrote "Accha". But the correct spelling is "Achchha or Achchhaa"(any 1 of
These 2 u can write). SImilarly there r 2 consecutive words in Asamese and Benagli
And those r "Cha" and "Chha" (Can u differentiate these 2 ?). If not let's check some
Words ...
Words that use "Cha" r : Chamatkar(Pronounced as Chamatkaar), Chingari(Pronounced
As Chingaari), Chalo(Let's go), Chaar(Four) ... etc and the word that use "Chha" r
Chhaiya(Pronounced as "Chhaiyaa" which means Lover. Remember the song
Chale Chhaiyaa Chhaiyaa, Dilse ?), Chhod Do(Leave it) ( Pronounced as "Chhor" )
... Is that okay ?
-----------
SO the Bengali words which use "Chha" and not "Cha r : Aachhi( like Aami Bhalo Aachhi, I am fine),
Chhile(like Tumi kothaay chhile ? where were u ?), Chhire(like
Chhire Phelonaa, don't tear it) ... The words which use "Cha " and not "Chha" r :
Chinmay, Chirodin or Chirojiban(Forever), Chithi(Letter), Chaa(Tea) ....
WOW!!!WOW!!!!! That's amazing no. of lessons for me to go through for having arrived a day late!!!!! And what with the thread adding a new dimension..with the 'similar' language Assamese to added to it.......Now me learning 2 languages at the same time!!!!! (what a feat!!! Phew.... ) I'm Lovin' it!!!!
PS: Divyanjali, I personally feel its ok to club the other language Assamese out here, as it is TOOOO similar (as you all have been pointing out) to Bengali (the original language in discussion here) ...If they had been very different languages, then it would have been better to start a new thread.....But since they are too close, I think it would only AID the thread in a better way, and its good for the progress of the thread to have both these clubbed here......Definitely an advantage for the readers here...easier to learn both, by comparing the similarities & minor differences, than having to compare the two languages on two different threads....
Anyways!!! that's great progress......Way to Go!!!!
Khushboo Ji aami kichhu Bolte paari ? ( Can I say something ? ). Not necessary but to spell
Correctly, may be not so important for many people. The correct spelling will be Nishchay
As there r 2 Letters in Bengal. 1 is "Sa" and other is "Sha" ( As I said before ) ..
If u write "Sure" in bengali it will be "Nishchay" ... as we write "Sha" and not "Sa" ....
I know it doesn't matter a lot but still I think that way I posted ... Aamio Bondhutta korte chaai
Keo aamaar Bondhu/Baandhabi ( ) habe ki ?(I would like make friendship, can any 1 will be my friend ?)...
U r correct and Correct. Aami Bandhuttar khoje ( ) beriye porechhi, taai likhechhi se kathaa ...
( I have come out to search for friendship that's why I wrote those lines.... ). Aami Bombay te thaaki,
Aapni kothaay thaaken ? ( I live in Bombay, where do u live ? ) ... Ektu ektu kore suroo korbo aamraa
Kemon ? Suroo korbo maane Parichay hobo. ( We will start little by little, start means introducing... )
Ok, should I write in Assamese also ? ( Moi asomiyato likhaa to uchit ne ? ) .
Heyy ....Bondhu.....Aami O Mumbaitey Thaaki!!! Tumi Mubaitey kothai thaako??? (Sorry...dont know the word yet, for 'Where'...just guessing...hehehe ) Anyways.....Good.....the Parichay atleast happened...Bandhuttar also.... Looking to hear more from you...
Arre Khushboo Ji!!! You too Bangla???
Hey Divyanjali......Would love to learn haryanvi language fromm you....why not!!! Btw......you have pronounciation problems with Bengali & Assamese??? (What's your mother toungue by the way???)
And where's Mandrake vanished???? Ehh Bondhu??? Kuthe gele??? (Dunno what's for that in Bengali.....or maybe.....even Assamese... ) C'mon yaar.....do grace this thread....awaiting you...
GKS, am right here, watching the get-together happening at this thread
With the right kind of people coming here, I realized that my role here is over (in the right sense)
With the real bondhus/baandhabis pitching in, this thread will prosper better
Maybe I will get to learn too
BTW, you are doing wonderfully well ! To guess 'kothai' correctly means you are tuned in perfectly
Aamaar Prashner uttar to aami paachchhinaa, keno ? Thik aachhe aami apekshaa korbo aamaar
Bandhu / Baandhabider jonye ..... ( I am not getting answers to the Questions, why ? Well I will wait
For my Friends .. ) ... GKSHYAM JI, aami Powaitey thaaki. Aapni ? Khoob garam ekhaane taainaa ?
Abashya anek din dhore Bristi, Ektu Thaandaa ektu Garam ..... ( I live in Powai, u ? It is too Hot
Here, rite ? But the days r rainy for last many days, little Hot and little Cold ) .. BTW "Kuthe gele"
Means "Kothaay Gechhile" or "Kothaay Gele" in Bengali, rite ? If in English it is "Where have u been ? " ..
-------------------
Hamaraforumat Asomiya bandhu aachhe neki ? moi kathaa paatiba bichaaro, bhaalei laagiba jodi
Asomiya Sakha aaroo Sakhi kichhumaan paaon bichaari. ( R there Assamese Friends on HF ?
I would like to talk, it will feel good if I can find Assamese Friends. ) .....
-------------------
DIVYANJALI JI don't write "Akhomiya", instead write "Asomiya" but pronunciate it like "Akhamiya" ok ?
For people who know B and A well, no problem but people who don't know anything they may get
Confused by Pronunciation and Spelling. But if U r getting bored when I say too much on the Spelling
U r welcome to say that .. I will try to improve the style of writing ....
BTW DIVYANJALI JI, I don't know if I am better but I will be only when u listen to us and teach us by
Criticising when we do wrong ... So keep posting. Really without seeing yr posts I will feel so sad to reply ...
Bye, Bye ( Taataa ) ...
NAture, i said na i have pronounciation problem..though i can read , write quite a bit.. anyways do tell me whereevr i am wrong...u dint tell u r Assamese ???
and keep mesging...love to see ur posts...good lesson for me too...
Divyanjali Ji, Never Mind and I am sorry for giving too much importance in Spelling and
Pronunciation though u told. Anyway forget it, yes I am from Assam and Assamese too ...

I had a friend who was assameese. At that time I used to understand maximum of what they spoke. Even I knew how to speak..though I never spoke out ..With your help I get to remember those days once again. Thanks.
Onek Dhonyobad:)
Oh God!!!! I'm screwed big time.........So much stuff.....so many lessons being missed by me in the last few days..........Lots of catching up to do.......
By the way (What's that called in Bangla/Assamese???) Prasenjit "Da" , Aamaar Naam G.Krishnan (G- stands for father's name) and Krishnan being my official "Naam". Aamaar "Pet" (is that called "Paaltu Naam??? ) Naam "Shyam". Therefore.......My name here on HF is a combination of my initials - "GK" and my pet name "SHYAM" - that makes it GKSHYAM.......
PS: Now please help me translate all that english into Bangla/Assamese.....
And yes...nice knowing about both of you...Prasenjit & Divyanjali.... Just a small doubt.....I dunno if I'm mixing up things out here.....But I thought Prasenjit, that you had said in the beginning that you live in Mumbai??? And your above posts give a totally different picture....../(Or Am I mixing up stuff said by someone else????? No idea......long since I got to visit this forum.....REALLY CONFUSED!!!)
DIVVY JI , Chaliye hataa diyaa ... main naa confuse karnaa
Chaahtaa hoon naa kisi ko Bore karnaa chaahtaa hoon ....
Agar Aap kehte hai tohi main wo message post karoongaa ... Ok ?
*************************************************
GK Shyam Ji , aapko doubt kyun hai ? main ne aeisaa kya likh diyaa ke aapko lag
Rahaa hai main Bombay se nahi hoon .. ???
arey Nature..ruk jao ab..bahut ho gaya bahi ke liye..pehle ka revision bhi karna hai....abhi aur naye words na do...
Shaayad aapne ye topic nahi khoole kayi dinse ... main ne change kar diyaa upar ..
Yes, I agree to u it was my big mistake and big fault .. u know I am a mad Man and
So behave accordingly .. Well did u hear about Jubeen Garg ? todays famous Assamese
Singer ? he has worked in Hindi Albums also .. here is one song of him .. He composed
This song in the memory of his mother when she died ..... This is for u !!! ..
Hmm....Some Bhaalo Khabar (Is 'Khabar' right for news???? ) Bappa Ji.......has agreed to help us out on this forum...sent me a PM on that............He'll help in teaching us the language.........So he joins the team of experts......alongwith Nature, Mandrake & Divyanjali.........Good going........
Ohh......toh aakhir taang de hi di tumne????
Well....won't exactly say ki aapka yahaan koi kaam nahin....... That cannot be possible......
But that song you chose.....was just too perfect to describe you, I guess..... too good selection..... Esp'lly in all the regional languages thread........the words suit your journey perfectly........start off teaching.....then.....when few others join the teacher's bandwagon......slowly slipoff..........then start the journey on another thread.....where ur presence may be reqd. more...... hehh?????
Mandrake Ji Aeisaa mat kahiye .. Hume aapki zaroorat hogi , aur jitne bhi Surmaa aayen idhar
Par hume to sab ki baate , Ideas sunnaa hai, hainaa ? Hum aashaa rakhte hai ke aap aate rahenge
Aur hume Tips dete rahenge ... aur idhar GKSHYAM Ji aapke baaremein sahi kahaa lakin wo khood

BCHATTERJEE JI, it will be so helpful for us if u join ... We can learn many things from u,
So start sharing yr Ideas ...
Oh yes.....that was sure some help!!!! Thanks so much Friend... I was wondering why no one had corrected me on that all these days.... So.... Amaar Daknaam Shyaam (Do I need to put Aacche here......or it'll do fine even without it??? )
G.K Ji ... No need to put "Aacche" , if u want to say "My pet name is Shyam" in Begali u can
Simply say "Aamaar daaknaam Shyaam" .. or sometimes u may use "Aamaar daaknaam holo
Shyaam" .. here "Aachhe" will not be correct. Is that okay Friend Ji ? ... Shyam Ji as Friend Ji
Said "Posha(Pro:Poshaa) kukur" means "Pet Dog" .. Lots of Good Teachers have come here ..
So I can learn many things .... Now u know these:
-----------------------------------------------------
Kukur = Dog
Beraal = Cat
Baagh = Tiger ( Does somebody have "Pet Tiger" ? )
Ghoraa = Horse
Chhaagal = Goat
Goru = Cow
Prajaapati (Pro: Projaapoti) = Butterfly
Singha(Pro: Shingha) = Lion
Doodh = Milk ( Do u drink Milk ? )
Saap(Pro: Shaap) = Snake
Chokh = Eye
Naak = Nose
Kaan = Ear
Haat = Hand
Gaal = Cheek
Thot = Lip
Mukh = Face
Maathaa = Head
Paa = Leg
WOW!!!! Thanks so much......Well, I did feel that the sentence should be proper without "Aacche". But still thought of confirming the same with you. Thanks again. Ohh.....By the way, I did not know the Bengali words for all those animals & parts of the human body. Will go through that too....Thanks so much!!!! Keep the lessons coming!!!

Hum Kavita ke Prasangshaa mein Kavi kobhi yaad karte hai, hainaa ? Ek Kalaakaar hi hai jo
Hume us Shaayari, Kavi yaa Sangeet jo bhi naam de usse hume Ras lene ko sikhaate
Hai ... aur unke isi gun ke kaaran aap aur hum un kalaakaaro ke diwaane banjaate hai ...
Aapne jo kaahaa hume bahut achchhaa lagaa kyun ke aap ne bilqool sahi kaahaa thaa. Par ek baat
Sochiye: " Agar aap Saundarya hai to hum aapke hi Pujaari hai, agar aap humse rooth gayi to
Duniyaan aapse rooth jaayengi " .... ( Kya ye jhoot hai ? galat hai ? )

['Tumi' word is equal to "Tum" in Hindi. If u use "Aap" for anybody, don't use "Tumi" for him/her. There you have to use "Apni". See the 5 & 6 no. Both meaning r the same. But the salutation is different.]
