This period of 1945 through 1953 offered some of the best and most memorable compositions of Hindi film music history from such music maestros as C Ramchandra, Naushad, Husnlal-Bhagatram, Madan Mohan, Roshan, Shankar-Jaikishan, S D Burman, Nashad, Sardar Malik, Anil Biswas, O P Nayyar, and Salil Chowdhury. These music directors worked passionately with poets like Indeevar, Prem Dhawan, Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, Shakeel Badayuni, Qamar Jalalabadi, Majrooh Sultanpuri, Rajinder Krishan, Shailendra, Nakshab, Sahir Ludhiyanvi, Balwant Tandon, and Hasrat Jaipuri, and singers like Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Mohammad Rafi, Mukesh, TalatMehmood, Kishore Kumar, Geeta Dutt, Shamshad Begum, Suraiya, Hemant Kumar, and Manna Dey to create those countless musical gems. As Ameen Sayani recalls, this was the time of newly gained independence and of sheer creativity, imagination, and indulgence put forth by those legendary artistes in their work.
