May his soul rest in peace.

Sweet memories of a gentle thespian

Bangalore: Producer M R Pattabhi Ram says, "Though the great actor is no longer with us today, he still remains with me in the form of sweet memories which I will always cherish." He had fulfilled a lifetime ambition by making the film Gan-dugali Kumararama. Recalls Pattabhi Ram, "If Rajku-mar were alive today, he would have been in the studio on Saturday singing a solo for it. Rajkumar had agreed to render his voice for a birthday sequence, singing 'Rama Rama
Ku-mararama' directed by Guru Kiran." Pattabhi Ram's association with Rajkumar's family is over a decade old. "My association began when I started addressing him as Sir. Then, I called him as Annavre. As we knew each other a little more, he became my Appaji. He considered me his sixth child. I am privileged to have been very close to him and had stimulating discussions with him."

On June 7 last year, Pattabhi Ram took the script of Kumararama to him. "When I told him that I wanted to produce a film on Kumararama, he was thrilled. He said I had fulfilled his 30-year dream of making a film on this subject." But Rajkumar's favourite subject was Bharathesha Vaibhava. "We would discuss this for hours and the way he narrated the story was thrilling. I am privileged to have heard the story from him. But Rajkumar was sad that he could not do the role of Bhakta Ambareesha."

Rajkumar showed keen interest in small things also. "When he came for the muhurtham of Kumararama, he noticed that his son Shivra-jkumar, who plays the hero, had no naama on his forehead. Immediately, Rajkumar pointed this out the mistake. Only when this done, did he switch on the camera."

According to Pattabhi Ram, Rajkumar never spoke ill of others and disliked sycophancy "When somebody praised him, he tried to change the subject by asking them about their family. But he always considered his fans as gods. "He would stand in front of his house and invite them inside and enquire about their welfare. Then, he would tell his wife Par-vathamma to serve them coffee or breakfast. Sometimes, he would make arrangements for their travel too." Pattabhi Ram recalls Rajkumar watching his movie Babruvahana. "He asked, 'Can we make such films now?' He was so engrossed in Babruvahana's character, he said, 'Listen to the words and the way he is expressing them'. He was very involved in his roles."

Even in hospital, Rajkumar never rested. "He would move around and visit neighbouring wards and enquire about the health of other patients. He would cheer them up. That was his nature"

All that anger, rioting and destruction in Bengalooru is against everything Dr.Rajkumar stood for. Being a Raj fan, I am ashamed of what went on.

All that anger, rioting and destruction in Bengalooru is against everything Dr.Rajkumar stood for. But it also demonstrates the love and obsession fans have for him. One can recollect a number of occasions when fans have gone overboard.

I sincerely doubt if it has anything to do with love or obsession of Fans, more like the Anti socials taking advantage of the situation...Tamill speaking people were beaten up near Banaswadi, even a couple of youngsters conversing in English were threatened, shops, even clinics were stoned, this only shows that it was mainly the bad elements with a lot of political backing taking over... what a shame.
