Btw in Vanjikottai I have only 3 tracks which is the 4th one? 1. Rajaa magal 2. Kannum Kannum kalandhu 3. Vennilave I have a P SUsheela solo "Ethhanai keLvi". QUOTE Karpagam has all beautiful tracks! Another example of VR brilliance. While other songs were more popular, one that I love in this film is "Pakkathhu veeTTu paruva machhhaan". PS does an excellent job. |

After a bit of a long break, here is my next contribution to this thread. The film is
the superb "AvargaL" directed by K Balachander. Whenever I see Indian films, old or new, there is always a part of my brain that is having to constantly shut out the inconsistencies, the obvious in-your-face emotions, and with some people, the over-acting. I happened to see 2 early films by S Balachander and was amazed at how they did not require this step. "AvargaL" was one of them. Extremely well acted by Sujatha, a brilliant turn by Rajnikanth as the sadistic husband, and a very very realistic, non-overdone job by Kamalahasan. The actor who plays Sujatha's sweetheart is called Ravikumar (thanx for that info Nimii) and he is the weakest link in the mix. I can see myself re-visiting the movie several times over the years and still enjoying every bit of it. The music by M S VIshwanathan is not superb (then again, I am comparing him to himself in the VR days), but they are all quite listenable. So here we go: Film: AvargaL (1977) *ring: Sujatha, Rajnikanth, Kamalahasan, Lilavathy Music: M S Vishwanathan Lyrics: KaNNadasan (I think) All songs are in mp3 format at 192kbps and sourced from the DVD of the film. Song 1: Title music Instrumental Duration: 3:04 |

Film: AvargaL (1977)
Song 2: IppaDi or thaalaaTTu paaDava Singer: S Janaki Duration: 4:31 The SJ combination with VR or MSV was never quite as good as when she paired up in the 80s with Ilayaraja. I never could figure out why that was. Similarly Susheela never quite sounded as good with IR. So, whenever I hear this song, I wonder if it might have sounded better in Susheela's voice. THe song encompasses the entire story of the main character's life till that point. She sings it as a lullaby to her child while her ex-lover listens to the story. NIce tune. |

Song 3: KaaTrukkenna veli
Film: AvargaL (1977) Singer: S Janaki Duration: 4:20 This is a romantic number by SJ, picturized near the beach. SJ's supreme control over her voice is very evident in this song. |

Song 4: Angum ingum paavai unDu
Film: AvargaL (1977) Singer: SPB Duration: 3:39 My favorite song in this film is this one. While SPB's voice does not have the depth that he got later on, he is able to show that he ranks among THE best male singers in the country. |

SB it is a background score while showing Sujata walking about the beach with a sense of freedom. Right? I have seen the movie long long ago! Impressive acting by Sujata. Rajnikant as the sadistic hubby! Lilavati as his mother, who is absolving the sins of the son by staying and taking care of the daughter in law and the baby.

Song 5: Junior, thirumaNam konDa thirumaNa vaazhvil
Film: AvargaL (1977) Singer: SPB Duration: 5:48 The scene is well done with Kamalahasan singing this along with his dummy (he is an amateur ventriloquist in the film). This was a really popular song and it is not bad. But it is not in my tops mainly cause I find the dummy parts jarring and irritating. And that was the last song in this film. |

SB rombo nandri. Will download them tomorrow! I do not have this album. Btw we could discuss all KB films. Especially his earlier ones are worth the discussions. I have seen most of them..
Iru kodugal, Bhama vijayam, Avargal, Apoorva Raagangal. His earlier movies had Nagesh doing very many roles. Esp the one as Maadiveetu Maadu in Ethir Neechal. |

Funny you should say that Nimii, cause my next film in the list is also
a KB film, one of his earliest hits "Major Chandrakant". |

SB let us say great minds think alike (shhhhhhh so do fools ).
Major Chandrakant had indeed the best performance by both Sunderrajan and Nagesh. I think this movie was also taken in Hindi but miles apart from the original. Oru naal yaaro by P Susheela is one catchy number. What are the others? Another great performance from Nagesh was in Neer Kumizhi (the original of ANAND). |

Thanks for bringing up Neer Kumizhi, Nimii. My dad too was mentioning of it a few days back about how Nagesh could make the audience cry with just his expressions. I would surely love to watch it ...... ! If Kaka can evoke sympathy as Anand, Im sure Nagesh would be a 1000x better !!
Looking fwd to KB film discussions..... esp those that had Nagesh in them jinhein ataa kii hai tu ne taaqat, unhein hidaayat kii roshnii de |
