I am starting a new post on the Legends of Telugu Cinema NT Rama Rao and A Nageswar Rao. I know the foot fall of this post will be few but still I want to complete my collection and sharing the albums available with me of these two legends. These two need no introduction as far as Telugu Cinema is concerned. They were fortunate enough to have reigned the Golden Period of Telugu Cinema accompanied my Ghantasala's music. Here is the brief biography of these two stars followed by their filmography.

NT RAMA RAO

N.T.Ramarao alias Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao was born in Nimmakuru, a small village in Gudivada taluk on 28th May 1923, had his early education from a tutor, Valluru Subba Rao, in his native village. His parents, Venkataramamma and Laxmaiah, gave him in adoption to the latter\'s brother, Ramaiah and his wife Chandramma, who were issueless. He studied up to Class V in his village as there was no further education there. Ramaiah and his wife took their adopted son to Vijayawada and got him admitted into Class VI in the Municipal school. While doing his Intermediate course, he supplemented the family income by supplying milk to hotels in Vijayawada on his bicycle. At the end of the first year, the students decided to stage a play written by Kavi Samrat Viswanadha Satyanarayana, the well-known Telugu poet and writer and the head of the Telugu department of the college. The play, Rachamalluni Dautyam, had a strong heroine's character and girls did not take part in stage activities in those days. Satyanarayana ordered Rama Rao to don the robe of the heroine, and the latter took it up, though unwillingly. That was his first role on the stage and it got him the first prize and also kindled his interest in histrionics. During the college anniversary celebrations the next year, he played the role of Salim in the play Anarkali and again bagged the first prize.

In May 1942, when he was 20, Rama Rao married Basava Tarakam, the daughter of his maternal uncle. He joined the Andhra Christian College at Guntur for the Bachelor of Arts course in 1945. He formed an amateur drama group, National Art Theatre, with the help of his friends. The group used to stage plays to raise funds for noble causes. The first offer to join films came Rama Rao's way, when he was still in college. The famous Telugu director, C. Pullaiah, offered him a role in his film Keelu Gurram. He, however, turned down the offer as he first wanted to complete his degree course. A well-wisher introduced him to the established director, L.V. Prasad, who after a screen test in Madras, offered him a small role in his film Mana Desam. Rama Rao, who wanted to take up acting as a full-time career was looking for the role of a hero and rejected the offer. In the meantime, he appeared for the Madras Service Commission examination for sub-registrar's post. Of the 1,100 candidates who took the test, seven were selected and he was one of them. He took up the job in October 1947 for a salary of Rs.120. On the very first day of reporting for duty, he was shocked to see the staff taking bribes and was disillusioned.

Luckily for him, B.A. Subba Rao, who was making his directorial debut, Palleturi Pilla, saw Rama Rao's photograph in L.V. Prasad's album and decided that he was the right man for the hero's role in his film. He was offered Rs.1116 for the hero's role and he accepted the offer and went back home after signing an agreement. He resigned the sub-registrar's job, three weeks after he took it up and went back to Madras to launch himself in the screen career. He accepted the role of a police sub- inspector in Prasad's Mana Desam, which was his first film. He had an obsession for trying to be realistic in his films. In his first film as hero in Palleturi Pilla, he refused the services of a duplicate to do the risky bullfight scene, much against the wishes of the director. After some time, he lost grip on the noose and the enraged bull lifted him, swung him around and threw him to the ground. He suffered a wrist fracture and was hospitalized for several weeks. The bullfight contributed to the success of the film and it became a mega hit, running for 100 days at seven theatres in Andhra region. It was the folklore, Patala Bhairavi, which was the turning point in his career. The first godly role he played was that of Lord Krishna in Maya Bazaar. However, it was his role in Sri Venkateswara Mahatyam, released in 1960, that gave him a new identity. The deification of Rama Rao began and his residence in Madras became a shrine for pilgrims, who would visit him after a trip to Tirupati. NTR fans used to wait in long queues outside his house for a darshan of their living-god. They used to apprise him of their problems back home in their villages and he listened to them patiently before rushing to the studio in the morning.

Though widely recognized for his mythological characters, he is considered one of the greatest actors in Telugu film, and in general in South Indian films. His portrayal of Lord Krishna in Maya Bazaar was a turning point in his life. This movie created a record in Telugu film industry. It was the first film which has crossed one crore collection in Telugu film industry. His portrayal of avatars of Vishnu, especially Rama, Ravana and Krishna, mesmerized an entire generation who saw the face of Rao when these gods were mentioned. He also donned the roles of an elderly teacher in Badi Pantulu becoming a model to his pupils, as a prince and pauper in Raju-Peda, a down-to-earth servant dedicated to his master in Aatma Bhanduvu, a retired military officer in Major Chandra Kanth. The most notable movies acted by Rama Rao in mythological characters are Maya Bazaar as Sri Krishna, Lava Kusa as Lord Rama, Sri Krishnaarjuna Yuddham as Sri Krishna, Bheeshma as Bheeshma, Bhookailasa as Raavana, Nartanasala as Arjuna and also as Bruhannala, Panadava-vanavsam as Bheema, Sri Venkateswara Mahatyam as Lord Venkateswara, Maha Mantri Thimmarusu as Sri Krishna Devarayalu and Dana Veera Sura Karna as Duryodhana, Sri Krishna and Karna. An important factor that made him a great actor was his ability to deliver extremely lengthy dialogues that were original verses from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata with a fervor and command unmatched by most of his contemporaries. In addition, he generally played multiple roles in the same movie, which increased the number of dialogues and hence the preparation required.

Patala Bhairavi, a folklore drama involving a wily magician, a beautiful princess and a poor but brave young man. Rama Rao played the young man. The film, released in 1951, was a runaway success: It celebrated 100-day runs in 34 cinema halls, silver jubilee (25 weeks) in 13 theatres and golden jubilee (50 weeks) in one. It broke all the previous box office records in the Telugu film industry. The film was soon made into a Tamil version by Vijaya’s and a Hindi version by Gemini’s – both with Rama Rao as hero. They too turned out to be hits. The film established him as a mass hero. Malleswari and Pelli Chesi Choodu, two of the other three Vijaya Productions, followed soon. They too did well at the box office. By the end of 1953, he had already starred in 14 films and felt encouraged to launch the National Art Theatre to produce films along with his brother Trivikrama Rao. The first film they produced was Todu Dongalu, in which he played the hero. A social film, meaning Fellow Thieves, it sought to expose the state of affairs in society. The film became the first Telugu movie to receive a certificate of merit from the President of India in 1954. It was the only Telugu film screened at a film festival in China that year. But, at the box office it was flop. The result was the making of Jaya Simha, a folklore drama, the next year, and 1955. The film was a hit. It celebrated 100-day runs a dozen cinema halls and silver jubilee in one. But the film that brought him instant fame for playing a godly role was Sri Venkateswara Mahatmyam, the story of the Lord of the Seven Hills at Tirumala-Tirupati. Directed by P. Pullaiah, a veteran, the black and white film cost Rs 11 lakh to make and was released in 1960. It celebrated silver jubilee, 100-day runs and grossed over Rs one crore on barely 20 prints – a record for that time.

A Nageswar Rao

Akkineni Nageswara Rao an actor as big as life, an artiste more than a star, a living legend in the history of Telugu film industry is also known as ANR. Nageswara Rao was born 20 September 1924 at Ramapuram, Gudivada in a poor farmer’s family, he education was only primary schooling and due to his parents’ poor economic conditions he took up acting at a very early age in street plays where he often played in female roles.
First Talkie film of Telugu Cinema 'Bhakta Prahlada' was released in 1931. Akkineni Nageswara Rao's (ANR) first film was released in 1941. It shows that the Telugu Cinema followed him except for the first 10 years. Knowing about Dr. Akkineni is like reading the encyclopedia of Telugu Cinema. His first debut Telugu film was Dharmapatni, where he played the role as one of the hero’s childhood friends, but later he continued as a part time stage actor and acted in several Telugu plays such as Ashoka Jyothy, Sathyanveshana and Telugu Talli. A famous Telugu filmmaker Ghantasala Balaramaiah, offered a role in his upcoming movie Seeta Rama Jananam in the role of Lord Rama to Akkineni Nageswara Rao. Akkineni's image is not restricted just to Andhra Pradesh alone. His characters do have Indian wide exposure. His 'Devdas' belongs to Bengali state, 'Kalidas' belongs to north, 'Tukaram' and 'Kora Gumbhara' belongs to Maha Rastra, 'Jayadeva' role belongs to Orissa and 'Kshetrayya' role belongs to Andhra Pradesh. By acting in films having background of various regions of India, he truly showed the national integrity and unity in diversity. Lucky that legendary singer Ghantasala too entered Telugu cinema almost with ANR. Ghantasala's rendition and ANR playing that role looked as 'made for each other'.
Akkineni Nageswara Rao acted in several Telugu films some of his prominent films that have been financial and success flims are Missamma, Ardhangi Kalidasu, , MayaBazaar, Dr. Chakravarthi, Muga Manasulu, Dasara Bullodu, Tenali Rama Krishna, Devadasu.
There is only one era for Telugu cinema as for as the Telugu Cinema is concerned. That is called Akkineni era. He gave new dimensions to the dances with his variety of dancing steps in is films. Nageswara Rao was a singing hero of the old times who sang for himself in some movies, Nageswara Rao was the contemporary to NTR who jointly shared popularity as one of the greatest Telugu actors for almost 40 years.
ANR has always been an outspoken person. His observations on his life and career are so realistic that one feels he has studied the world well. His comment on social, political and cultural scenario is well studied. He is the most attractive speaker in all the functions he participates these days. He is a potential conversationalist. Life in the tinsel world provided him basic education. He says that institutions like Pratibha, Bharani, Sarada, Annapoorna, Jagapati and individuals like DL Narayana, Raghavayya, Bhanumathi, Dukkipati and many famous writers and poets constituted his university of learning. These learned men are comparable only to learned professors in any University. Playing a poet, a singer, a lover, an adventurer or a folklore hero means a lot of experience. As an actor, ANR transported himself into the role first and then into one who is capable of looking at life from all angles, analytically. He learned a lot and digested quite a bit of it. ANR braved many challenges. He is a critic's critic and is gifted with analytical mind. "One has to first understand and assess his own strong and weak points before accepting a role. I love a journalist who mirrors the true faults in performances of artistes. I keep a man away who always praises me," he says.

Often he would say "What would have happened to me if Ghantasala Balaramiah did not notice me on the railway platform and looked other side while I was walking on the platform", he recalls. "It was a tryst with destiny or say was a matter of chance that I came into his view and that moment changed my destiny", he observes. He has his favorite artistes to cherish. Ashok Kumar and Dilip Kumar of Hindi cinema and Gregory Peck and Marlon Brando of Hollywood. But remember ANR has been a contemporary of these actors. There is a lot in his life for other artistes to learn. This actor, who was considered unfit for socials, after he figured in many folklores in the early period, ultimately proved he is a master at socials, historicals, mythologicals and devotionals like 'Vipranarayana'. ANR also takes credit even for the development of film industry in Andhra Pradesh. With him came many of his producers to Hyderabad. He is credited for many firsts – first who introduced hero dancing in cinema, call sheet diary system

He is liberally graced with all the awards an actor can get. He is the recipient of Dada Saheb Phalke Award, the greatest honor for an actor in this country. He is also the recipient of Raghupati Venkayya Award, the best award for any actor at state level. He also grabbed the Kalidasu award granted by MP Government at national level. Not to mention the NTR National award given by our state government. He is recently been appointed as an adviser to the State Film Development Corporation. Though, it was an official position for ANR, he was voluntarily helping the film industry in various ways since ages. He was the first Telugu hero to migrate from Madras (now known as Chennai) to Hyderabad to develop film industry in AP. He laid the foundation stone for Hyderabad Telugu cinema by announcing that all his producers have to produce their films in AP, if ANR has to act in them. He gave a five-point plan to state government about how to improve the Telugu Cinema industry in AP in 1963. ANR is an engineer and architect within himself and a designer too, when it came to the construction of his studios. Annapoorna Studios is one of the best in Asia, with all the facilities, the lack of which in other studios. Since there were no studios in AP at that time, then Nageswara Rao established Annapurna studios after his wife’s name Annapurna. After seeing the deterioration in the number of films getting produced in AP, he incorporated an award for the best film to encourage the filmmakers. State Government is presenting Akkineni Nageswara Rao award every year. ANR never cared for commercial success when it comes to producing films on his own banner, Annapurna Pictures. He did two noble films, Sudi Gundalu and Maro Prapancham.
Nageswara Rao is married to Akkineni Annapurna and is blessed with two sons and a daughter one of his son Akkineni Nagarjuna is a well-known actor Telugu film industry, and his family has produced several notable artists to Telugu film industry.

The major contributory factor for the everlasting image of this evergreen hero is that none in India or even in foreign land has such long screen innings as a hero, like ANR does. It is a record for any artiste to stay hero for more than six decades on screen.
For ANR "'Maya Bazar' of KV Reddy is a lesson in cinematography art," he says. For him 'Donga Ramudu' is a social epic in cinema art. ANR described Adurti Subba Rao as a bridge between the old and new generations of directors. He brought changes in story narration, combining the values of the past with the present and narrating a story with the technical advancement. These are all firsts. For ANR the golden period for Telugu cinema was between 1950 and 1970.

In his 69 years in the Telugu film industry, Akkineni Nageswara Rao has played the lead role in over 256 Telugu films and 26 Tamil films. Several of these films turned out to be financial and critical successes. . He is a man with great sense of discipline and perspicacity. A legend in his own lifetime.

Great thread Seshadri. I may not be downloading much here as I have most of their work. I know from my other series in this section that the fans are few and far in between. But don't be discouraged. I almost discontinued one of my threads I was so eager to share when I found that there were no takers. But several friends of this Forum encouraged me to continue.

I will make sure that I will follow this thread closely.

Best of luck.

Cheers,
S

Mana Desam (Telugu)

This film was directed by L.V. Prasad (of many Telugu and Hindi films fame). It made history in several fronts. Here are some highlights…

1. It introduced N.T. Rama Rao in a supporting role. It was a negative role. Little did anyone know that he will go on to make history in Telugu films first and later in Andhra Pradesh politics.

2. It also introduced one of the greatest character actors of the Indian screen, S.V. Ranga Rao.

3. It introduced another great Telugu name, Ghantasala. He was the music director of the film. He also sang few songs in the film. Ghantasala ruled the Telugu cinema field unchallenged for nearly four decades as a singer unparalleled.

4. It was produced by the actress C. Krishnaveni, who also was the heroine of the film. She was also a singer and sang all of her own songs in the film.

5. Some reports say that one of South India’s greatest singers, Susheela was also introduced in this film. I couldn’t authenticate this claim because I wasn’t sure the song she sang.

6. It was the first Telugu movie based on Bengali literature. Its story was taken from Sharat Chandra Chatterjee’s classic Bengali novel, “Vipradas”.

A word or two about the actress, singer, and the producer of this film, Krishnaveni. She started playing small roles in dramas and got a break by entering into the movies as a child artiste. She made only few movies in Telugu, Tamil, and Kannada, altogether less than 30. After marrying one of the producers in the Telugu field, Raja of MIrzapuram, she ventured into producing movies herself. She experimented in her movies by showing the rich cultural heritage of Telugu people and their culture. Besides the artistes mentioned above, she also introduced another music director Ramesh Naidu.

I am uploading most of the songs from this film in two back-to-back posts. It appears that I may be missing two songs shown in red italics in the second table given in the second post. If anyone can share these missing songs, I will be thankful.

I am not certain of singer assignments. I would appreciate if someone can help sort this out. Also, a word of caution. The quality of these songs varies from poor to average. I tried to clean the noise, but was only partially successful. Please download this with this warning in mind.

Incidentally, the song “Vaishnava Janato Tene Kahiye” sung by Ghantasala appears to be a Gujarati song. Can someone verify this please? Thanks.

Now for the songs in the first post from this history making film…

Thanks for the album Manadesam SP. Now coming to the songs according to my information (which may be wrong) Atta leni kodalu was ommitted from the film and was later released in Ghatasala's own voice as in a private song of Ghantasala. I am also not sure if this is the song in question or is there any other song by the same words. Any ways here is the song. This song is courtesy simplefable.

Palletoori Pilla (1950)

This movie is a landmark in the Telugu film industry for several reasons. It was directed by the first time director B.A. Subba Rao who went on to make several great movies in Telugu like “Bheeshma”, “Raju Peda”, “Chenchu Lakshmi”, and others. But it was more significant because it introduced N.T. Rama Rao in the lead for the first time. For Rao, who made his debut in a supporting negative role in L.V. Prasad's "Mana Desham" in 1949, this was the first film in which he got the opportunity to play the lead role. When he was selected to play the role, many expressed concern about a newcomer playing the lead. Anjali Devi and Nageshwara Rao, both established actors by this time, were already signed to play the other lead roles in the movie. After the movie was released and became an instant success, the director’s choice of Rama Rao as the hero was applauded.

Taapi Chanakya, son of Taapi Dharma Rao, a noted writer who co-wrote the story, dialogues, and lyrics for this film, was the assistant director. Chanakya later made himself a name by directing several successful films such as “Ramudu Bheemudu”. He also directed the Dilip-starrer “Ram Aur Shyam (1967)” in Hindi.

Aadi Narayana Rao, a childhood friend of Subba Rao, composed the music. Rao was married to Anjali Devi, the heroine of the film. I am not sure whether they were married before this movie or afterwards. He later established with his wife a production company called “Anjali Pictures” and made several successful movies. Rao composed hit music for several movies including the award winning “Suvarna Sundari". Rao also composed the music for the Hindi version of this film. He helped develop the story of this film along with Taapi Dharma Rao and the director Subba Rao. The story was loosely based on an English play "Fijaro" by Richard Sherton.

T.V. Raju was the assistant music director of the film. He assisted Rao for a long time. Raju later went onto make big as an independent music director with several hit films like “Jayasimha”, “Panduranga Mahatyam”, and others.

Dance director for the film was Vedantam Raghavayya. Raghavayya later became a full-fledged director. His most famous film is the Telugu classic “Devadasu” made in 1953 with Savithri and Nageshwara Rao.

Rama Rao's first take in this film was the scene in which he is slapped by the heroine. Later on in an interview, Subba Rao recalls that for the first time hero it was a very difficult shot. They got the scene finally right but only after several takes. In the action sequence where the hero has to fight a bull, apparently NTR himself fought the bull without taking any help. He suffered several bodily injuries in the fight. In spite of this, he showed up the very next day for the shoot, all covered with bandages and ready to go.

The movie when it was released became a super hit. Gemini later made this in Hindi as “Insaniyat” in 1955 with Bina Rai (Anjali’s role), Dilip Kumar (Nageshwara Rao) and Dev Anand (Rama Rao). Hindi film also was a super hit.

I was fortunate enough to get hold of a VCD of this film. In spite of the poor overall quality, I was able to rip all the songs and several music clips. I cleaned them to reduce the noise from most of the songs and the final result for a movie that is 56 years old turned out to be fairly decent. The only problem is that I don’t have singer assignments. If someone can help with this I will be very grateful.

I will upload these songs in three back-to-back posts. The first two posts contain all the songs from the film. The third post includes several music clips.

Here are the songs in the first post…

(ANR) Devadas (1953) - A Tamil Classic

This classic film will be forever remembered for one of the greatest performances given by any actor. ANR, in the title role, was so phenomenally great that the pathos, the sorrow, the suffering he showed still haunt me. An unforgettable experience.

I wrote a detailed write up on the Telugu version of this film, "Devadasu (1953)", in this Forum sometime back. Because both Telugu and Tamil versions were simultaneously made with just about the same star cast, that write up is also an apt description for the Tamil version. You can read this in the "Muse & Music" thread in the "Sangeet ke Sitarey" directory at the following location...

https://www.hamaraforums.com/index.php?showtopic=77140&st=355

I am uploading songs from the Tamil film here on request in two back-to-back posts. The songs are complete except for part 1 of "O O O O Devada". If anyone of you can share this I will be thankful.

Here are the songs in the first post. I am also including in this post a private recording by Rama Krishna of the song "Santhosham Tharum".

(ANR) Palnati Yuddham (1947)

In 40's most of the Telugu films recruited those performers who knew how to sing as well. This was a requirement as playback did not catch on yet. In these old films, therefore, you see most of the old-timers not only could act but sing as well. Take for example this movie made in 1947, the year India gained independence from the British rule. In this both the heroine, S. Vara Lakshmi as well as the hero Nageshwara Rao (ANR) sang their songs. There is also Kannamba, a fine actress and singer as well. She acted in nearly 150 films, both in Telugu and Tamil. She had her own production company and produced nearly 25 films. She played Nagamma in this movie and sang several songs.

ANR, though an established actor by this time, was still an eligible bachelor during the filming of this movie. He and S. Vara Lakshmi fell in love during its production. Their romance continued for some time. But ANR got cold feet as he faced pressure from his well-wishers and relatives not to go ahead with his proposed marriage to Vara Lakshmi. He backed off and later married a woman selected by his family members.

I am uploading songs from this film in two back-to-back posts. I am still missing several songs and these are listed in the second post. Here is a word of caution. Because these songs are very old, their quality is uneven. It appears like some of these were recorded from 78 RPM records. The noises in some of the songs give this away. In spite of this, the overall audibility of the songs is passable.

Here are the songs in the first post...

(ANR & NTR) Samsaaram (1950)

The year 1950 saw Nageshwara Rao and Rama Rao, both to be future super stars of Telugu cinema, act in two movies together. “Palletoori Pilla” was one of them. This was the other film. Both were jubilee hits. This was directed by the venerable L.V. Prasad, another future producer and director of several great films in Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi.

Lakshmi Rajyam, who starred opposite Rama Rao in this film, went onto establish her own production company and made several hit movies, including the classic “Narthanashala (1963)”. The other heroine, who acted opposite Nageshwara Rao, was Pushpalatha. Interestingly, Savithri, another future great actress to be, was cast originally for this role. It was first for Savithri. She came from her place in Vijayawada all the way to make her debut in this movie, but became very nervous to shoot any scenes with Nageshwara Rao, who was an already established actor. After several days of shooting, director Prasad decided to drop her and give that role to Pushpalatha. Savithri did appear in this movie as one of the friends of Pushpalatha for a song scene and had one dialogue. You can read all this account and how Savithri overcame this unexpected hardship to become one of the greatest actresses of our times by visiting the website dedicated in memory of her. The website is: www.savithri.info

There are 13 songs in this film. Most of them became chartbusters. One of the songs, “Kala Nijmaayega”, was a copy of the hit song from Raj Kapoor’s “Barsaat (1949)”. The song was “Jiya Beqaraar Hai” sung by Lata. I am uploading all 13 songs in two back-to-back posts. Here are the songs in the first post…

(ANR) Rathnamala (1948)

Bhanumathi, one of the most versatile actresses of Telugu films, established her own production company along with her director-husband Rama Krishna Rao and made this maiden film under that banner, "Bharani Pictures". She was a gifted singer, actress, humorist, writer, producer, director, music director, and was equally at ease with both Telugu and Tamil languages in which she appeared or made several noteworthy movies. In the middle of all this fame and fortune, she enrolled in the school to finish the Doctorate degree in Telugu literature. She was truly a remarkable and awesomely talented woman.

I am uploading some of the songs from this film below. A couple of them, noted in the table below, are of pretty bad quality. I tried to clean them but without much success. Because these songs are so rare, I am including them here compromising on their quality. Also, I am also pretty sure that these songs are not complete. If anyone of you have any of the missing songs from this film, please share.

One of the character actors of Telugu films, C.S.R. Anjaneyulu sang several songs in this film. I am uploading one of his songs "Aagave Maradala" with and without the introduction. I am not confident who the person giving this introduction is, but I thought it might be the hero of this film, Nageshwara Rao himself. If someone can throw more light on this I will be thankful.

Here are the songs I have from this film...

(ANR) Raksharekha (1949)

This hit movie brought Bhanumathi and Anjali Devi, both big stars at that time, together for the first time opposite Nageshwara Rao. Bhanumathi played an earthly princess and Anjali a celestial beauty. The object of their affection was Rao.

Kasturi Shiva Rao, the comedian actor, had an important role in this film. He started his career in 1939 with the film "Vara Vikrayam". Incidentally, Bhanumathi also made her debut in the same film. Rao was known for comedy and had a pretty good singing voice. He sang two songs in this film and when you listen to them, you will be easily convinced that he was a very talented singer. In 1950, he produced and directed a film called "Paramanandayya Shisyulu" with Nageshwara Rao as its hero and a newcomer Girija as heroine (she made a brief appearance in "Patala Bhairavi" the same year). When that movie flopped he lost everything. By this time, Relangi Venkatramayya took firm control as a comedian in Telugu films. With no acting assignments at hand, Shiva Rao went back to his origins, performing in the theater. He tragically died while performing on stage in a play. He was penniless at his death. For his funeral only two of his friends and former costars were present, Peketi Shivaram, another comedian actor, and Nageshwara Rao.

There are quite a few songs in this film. I am uploading nine songs I have in the first post. There seems to be another seven that are missing. I have listed them in the second post. If anyone of you have these missing songs, please kindly share. Thanks.

(ANR) Sri Lakshmamma Katha (1950)

Ghantasala Balaramayya, the producer and director of this film, started his film career as an actor debuting in “Ramadasu” in 1936. Later he became a producer with “Markandeya” in 1938. In 1941 he joined the ranks of directors by making the film “Parvati Kalyanam”. In 1942, he directed a movie called "Seeta Rama Jananam". In this movie, he introduced Akkineni Naheshwara Rao, one of the great actors of our times. After this movie, Balaramayya took a keen interest in grooming Rao’s career and gave it a boost by mentoring him and making several successful movies with him. These include “Mugguru Marathilu” made in 1946, “Balaraju” in 1948, “Sri Lakshmama Katha” and “Swapna Sundari” both in 1950. All these movies hit the bull’s eye but it was “Balaraju” that gave ANR the stardom.

Balaramayya wanted to make “Sri Lakshmamma Katha” for some time. Because of his other commitments he postponed making this movie. But when he heard that Mirzapuram Raja is making the same movie, he shelved “Swapna Sundari” for a while to start and finish “Sri Lakshmamma Katha” in a record time of five weeks. Raja’s movie starred his star wife Krishnaveni and Narayana Rao as the hero and released at the same time as Balaramayya’s. “Sri Lakshmamma Katha” became a hit. Apparently Raja’s movie, titled “Lakshmamma” with music by Ghantasala also became popular.

There are 14 songs in this film. I am uploading here 10 songs I have. A list of the missing songs is shown in the second post. Here are the songs in the first post...

(ANR) Swapna Sundari (1950)

The success of this film with a story of a man from the earth falling in love with a woman from heavens became a template for many more movies that followed it. Interestingly every one of them became very popular. Anjali, who played the dream woman in hero's life, later made a movie, "Suvarna Sundari (1957)" that was similar in theme, under her home banner that became a huge success in all the languages it was made in. Vijaya Pictures made a movie called "Jagadeka Veeruni Katha" in 1961 that was an extension of the same theme. In 1990, yet another film ("Jagadeka Veerudu Athi Loka Sundari") with the similar theme was made. All these movies were hugely successful. There must be something fascinating for people about these fantasy stories.

I am uploading songs from this film in two back-to-back two posts. I am also including a special version of "Kaanaga Naithiniga" with an introduction. I believe the person talking is Anjali Devi herself but I am not 100% sure of this. Anyway, here are the songs in the first post...

(NTR) Chandrahaaram (1954)

Ever since Vijaya Pictures entered into production of movies with their maiden venture "Shaavukaaru" in 1950, they made it a point to produce alternately a social film followed by a fantasy or mythological. "Chandrahaaram" with a story by Pingali Nagendra Rao borrowed heavily from several children books all over the world and in doing so lost its focus. With the central character, here NTR, sleeping (like in "Sleeping Beauty" story), there wasn't much to be done. The director resorts heavily on the supporting actors, mostly comedians. For director Kamalakara Kamseshwara Rao, a Telugu film critic until this film, this was a maiden assignment. Even though L.V. Prasad supervised the proceedings, because of the feeble storyline no one could help lift the movie. In spite of this setback, Rao went on to make several good movies including "Panduranga Mahatyam (1957)" and "Gundamma Katha (1962)".

Interestingly, Vijaya Pictures spent a lot of money making this movie. Until that time, this was the costliest Telugu film made. Its budget was estimated at 25 lakh Rupees!

One novelty of the movie was that Savithri was cast in a negative role. There are plenty of songs in the film, 14 of them. They seem to appear so frequently that the pace of the proceeding slows even further. Nevertheless, there are several good songs composed by Ghantasala.

I am uploading these songs in two back-to-back posts. Here are the songs in the first post...

(NTR) Sangham (1953)

Vyjayanthi Mala was introduced in "Vazhkai", a Tamil movie, in 1949. It was also made in Telugu as "Jeevitham" and released the same year. In 1951 it was remade in Hindi as "Bahar". "Sangham" was made and released in Tamil ("Penn"), Telugu, and Hindi ("Ladki") films all in 1953.

S. (Sundaram) Balachander who had a supporting role in "Sangham" also had the same role in Tamil. He hailed from a family of musicians and had keen interest in classical music. He could perform many instruments and had several interests. He decided to quit acting once he decided that it was veena he would like to be a maestro of. He soon rose to the stature of one of the greatest veena players of our time. He was awarded Padma Bhushan by the Government of India. He passed away in 1990.

I am uploading songs from this film in two back-to-back posts. Even though quality of most of the songs is very good, yet there are some for which it could have been better.

(NTR) Pichhi Pullayya (1953)

Rama Rao along with his brother Thrivikrama Rao established a production company in 1953 called National Arts. Their first movie under this banner was this film “Pichhi Pullayya”. Brothers collaborated in producing several other good movies until early 70’s. Some of the memorable hits that came from this production house include “Jaya Simha (1955)” and “Sri Seetha Rama Kalyanam (1960)” among others.

Interestingly this movie has both sisters Janaki and Krishna Kumari come together in the same film. Kumari’s love interest in the movie was Rao whereas Janaki’s was Amarnath.

The director for this movie was Tatineni Prakasha Rao who made his debut the previous year with the purposeful social drama “Palletooru” that also starred Rama Rao. Tatineni wrote the story as well as the screenplay of this film.

There are 11 songs in this film. I am uploading all these songs in two back-to-back posts. The source of these songs was a DVD. Audio quality of these songs ranges from so so to average. I don’t know the singers’ names for the songs in the second post. In the movie almost all these songs were sung by the same character. Therefore I am assuming probably the singer may be just one and the same person. Could this be M.S. Rama Rao or Madhavapeddi? If anyone has the answers, please share. Thank you.

Here are the songs in the first post...

(NTR) Rechukka (1954)

Ghantasala Balaramayya, who made many hit films and the man who introduced Nageshwara Rao in “Seetha Rama Jananam” in 1942 wrote the story and was producing and directing this movie. But he passed away with only a quarter of the movie completed. His son Krishna Murthy took over the reins and signed P. Pullayya to finish the rest of the movie. Pullayya not only agreed to direct the rest of the movie but also invested his own money into the production when the producer ran into financial problems. The movie was based on a 1951 Hollywood hit, “The Prince Who Was a Thief”, that starred Tony Curtis in the lead role.

“Rechukka” introduced a new heroine to the Telugu screen. Pramila, who played the princess, was a daughter of the famous Raghupathi Venkayya Naidu who was a photographer, film producer and director. He was mainly active during the silent film era. Pramila later changed her name to Devika and acted in a number of Telugu and Tamil films.

“Rechukka” when it was released became a hit with several songs from it becoming popular. It was later made in Tamil as “Nattutara”. The Tamil film also was a hit.

I am uploading songs from this album from a DVD. The quality of these songs is better than average. Here are these…

(NTR) Raju-Peda (1954)

This movie was based on an English film “The Prince and the Pauper” which itself was based on the novel of the same name written by the great American humorist and novelist Mark Twain. The book was published in 1881 and was made into movies and plays many a number of times. It was also published as a comic book in 1946.

The Telugu film is almost a carbon copy of the 1937 version of the film including the funny looking wardrobe worn by the royalty. Many variations of the story were filmed in all languages, with some adapted to current social environments. Most notable among these are “The Parent Trap” made by Walt Disney in 1961 and “Trading Places” made in 1983. Disney’s picture was made in most of the Indian languages, as “Letha Manasulu” in Telugu in 1966 and “Do Kaliyan” in 1968 in Hindi. The Telugu film “Iddaru Mithrulu” made in 1961 also borrowed heavily from the Twain novel.

“Raju-Peda” with all its stellar cast did only an average business. Interestingly it is Relangi, the comedian, who played the role of a soldier, a champion of the poor and not Rama Rao as one expects. In the English version Earl Flynn played the role Relangi played. Rama Rao played here as a petty thief who is an abusive husband and father. His role was very limited, may be about 15 minutes, less than that of Relangi. But playing an offbeat role, Rao performed brilliantly. The movie actually belonged to the child artiste Master Sudhakar who played the roles of both the prince and the pauper. He has most of the screen time, nearly 80% of it. That left for other veteran actors not much scope. Ranga Rao, a great actor he was, kind of disappointing in the role of the king.

Does anyone know what happened to Master Sudhakar? I would like to know more about him if someone can elaborate on his whereabouts and his career after this movie.

I am uploading songs from this film taken from a DVD in two back-to-back posts. The audio quality is passable. Unfortunately I don’t have details of the singers for many of the songs. Please help fill the gaps if you can. Thanks.

Now for the songs in the first post…

(NTR) Vaddante Dabbu (1954)

This movie produced by H.M. Reddy was based on a Marathi play written by G.D. Mudugulkar. Mudugulkar became well known when Shantaram made his internationally acclaimed “Do Aankhen Barah Haath”, released in 1957, was based on his story.

In 1988 a movie with the similar theme to this Telugu film, “Maalamaal”, with Naseeruddin Shah was made. “Vaddante Dabbu” was also remade in Telugu as “Baabaai Abbaai” in 1984 with Rama Rao’s son Bala Krishna as the hero.

The songs of this film were ripped from a DVD. Both the picture quality and the sound quality of the DVD were terrible with lots of footage missing. On the top of it, the DVD contained only five songs. There are at least three more songs, I believe, were there in the original film version.

I tried to clean up the audio as much as I could but there are still some skips that I couldn’t get rid of. My apologies for the poor quality of some of the songs. The table below lists missing songs shown in red italics. If anyone of you have these missing songs or better quality songs, please share. Thanks.

Now for the five songs from this album…

(ANR) Stree Saahasam (1951)

D.L. Narayana who worked as a production manager with Bharani Studios wanted to become an independent producer. Along with the director Vedantam Raghavayya and the music director C.R. Subburaman, he established the banner Vinoda Pictures. Their first venture was this film. In this folklore, the female character was the central character. Anjali Devi played that role. Opposite her was Nageshwara Rao. When the movie was released it became a super hit. This led DL to move ahead with his dream project of making Devadasu. The movie started shooting in earnest in 1951 itself but because of various problems eventually it was shelved. After CRS passed away, DL decided to go on his own and make Devadasu with a relatively new heroine, Savithri. The film was released in 1953 and created a history...

This film has 16 songs in it. I am uploading nine of them here. This is in the first post. Unfortunately I don't have any details about the singers. The great singer Leela was introduced in this movie with the song "Oogara Rathanaala Paapa". Raja Sulochana, who had a brief role in the film, was also introduced in this film. For a change, the quality of most of these songs is good.

The second post contains a list of the missing songs. If anyone of you can share these, please do. Thanks.

(ANR & NTR) Tenali Ramakrishna (1956)

B.S. Ranga (see the attached picture below), who produced and directed this award winning film, had a distinguished film career. He was born in Karnataka and was a self-taught photographer. At age 17, he sent some of his work to the Royal Salon in London which promptly exhibited his work. He was later elected as an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society.

Later he moved to Bombay and worked as cameraman. After a brief stint there, he moved to Madras where he worked as a cinematographer for some of the famous movies. These included “Laila Majnu (1949)” and the classic “Devadasu (1953)”.

After directing a couple of movies, he decided to form his own production company, Vikram Productions. Under this banner, his first film was “Tenali Ramakrishna”. It was produced in both Tamil and Telugu. He was the cinematographer, producer, and director. The Telugu film won the President’s Silver Medal.

B.S. Ranga devoted 50 years of his life to various facets of film making. He was a cinematographer, producer, director, screenplay writer, studio owner, exhibitor, and was involved in many other areas of film making. He was quite an accomplished and remarkably able man.

“Tenali Ramakrishna” has many songs and several verses (“padyaalu”). The first two posts contain all the songs from a CD. The third post contains verses, most of them sung by Ghnatasala.

Here are these songs; I am uploading them on request, starting with the first post…

(ANR) Kanna Thalli (1953)

This film was a home production of G. Vara Lakshmi, who had the title role of the film. She started as a child artiste and singer. She landed in Bombay to find singing opportunities. She sang in a chorus line for one of Naushadji's films. But that was the only bright spot for her singing career in Bombay. Not satisfied with her career as a singer, she returned to Madras where she met and married Prakasha Rao, who was a director. Soon after that, together they established their own production company, Prakash Pictures, and made several films, some even very controversial.

In this film, some of it inspired by Mehboob Khan's "Aurat (1941)" Vara Lakshmi played the role of a mother. "Kanna Thalli" also introduced a new singer, Susheela. Susheela went on to rule the Southern film field, especially Telugu films, for nearly 50 years.

Interestingly, this film was photographed by the veteran Hindi film actor Gajanan Jagirdar. This was the only film he worked as a cinematographer. He must have been a friend of Vara Lakshmi from her Bombay days.

This movie has at least 13 songs. I am uploading only six of them. The missing songs are shown in red italics in the table below. I am requesting members to share these missing songs if they can. Here is a word of caution. The quality of these songs is about fair to average.

(ANR) Santhanam (1955)

Savithri came to Madras at an young age of 14 to star as the heroine opposite already well established and much heralded Nageshwara Rao (ANR) in L.V. Prasad's "Samsaram". She was so intimidated after a few days of shooting with him that the director has to change his mind and drop her from the film. She appeared as an extra in a song sequence in the film. It only took a couple of more years before she could prove her mettle as an actress to kook forward in the future. Her biggest breakthrough was the big film with ANR in the classic "Devadasu" that came in 1953. She was absolutely astonishing as Paru matching the skills of ANR from frame to frame. That same year she starred in another jubilee hit "Brathuku Theruvu" (later made in Hindi as "Jeene ki Raah" by Prasad). This was followed by another hit "Ardhangi" with ANR again (made in Hindi as "Bahurani"). On the heels of these successes, this film came along. It was another jubilee hit with ANR. It was remade in Hindi by Prasad in 1964 as "Beti Bete". Savithri went on to score a hit after hit commercially as well as artistically. You can read more about this on the website dedicated to her. Its URL is savithri.info.

Another distinguishing feature of this film is that Lata Mangeshkar sang for the first time in a Telugu film. Her solo as well as the same song as a duet with Ghantasala, "Nidura Pora Thammuda", became sensational hits. Interestingly, for the same situation, she sang the same song in Hindi "Beti Bete" as well.

Apart from the song mentioned, I have one of my all time favorites of Ghantasala solos in this film. This is the song "Challani Vennela Lo". A thing of beauty that is very rich in poetry and sung so romantically by the great Ghantasala.

I am uploading all songs from this film on request in two back-to-back posts. Many of these songs came from a CD. Others were obtained from various MP3 album sources. Here are the songs in the first post...

(NTR) Iddaru Pellaalu (1954)

M.V. Rajamma (see the attached picture below) was a distinguished actress of the South Indian film industry. She acted mostly in Kannada films, but distinguished herself by starring in a number of Tamil and Telugu films as well. She was a stage actress before she entered into films in 1936 when she was only 13. She was active in the film industry for over 53 years. Her last appearance in a film was in 1989. During that span of time she appeared in over 100 films. She passed away in 1999 at the age of 76.

Rajamma was associated mostly with the films made by the great Kannada director B.R. Panthulu. She knew him from her stage days. Rajamma started her own production company in 1943 which was later merged with Panthulu’s production house. One of her early big Telugu hit was director K.V. Reddy’s “Yogi Vemana” with Chittoor Nagayya in the title role. This came in 1947.

I was able to find a copy of “Iddaru Pellaalu” that was incomplete (only 100 minutes of it) and poorly preserved. Even though Rama Rao heads the star list, he barely had any role in the film. We first see him in the film after an hour into the movie. Jamuna also appears at the same time.

Here is a little bit of trivia. Many fans believe that "Maya Bazar (1957)" was the first film in which Rama Rao played Lord Krishna. It turns out that, in "Iddaru Pellaalu", Rao is Lord Krishna in a dream sequence and this movie precedes "Bazar" by three years.

I was able to get all songs except the two shown in red italics in the table below. The quality of the songs is poor to fair. With that word of caution, I am uploading these songs below on request…

(ANR & NTR) Charana Daasi (1956)

This movie was based on Tagore's "The Wreck" novel. It boasted who is who of Telugu actors of those times. It has tons of songs, lots of comedy, and much emotional drama. Yet it wasn't the stupendous success the producer Shankara Reddy expected it to be. He has to wait for another seven years for his "Lava Kusha (1963)" to happen.

In Tagore's story the movie revolves around a ship wreck. In both Tamil and Telugu versions it was replaced by a train accident. During the shooting of the movie there was a real train wreck in Ariyalur. The director Tatineni Prakasha Rao used that footage of the accident and integrated into the movie to blend into the story nicely.

Both Tamil and Telugu versions had almost the same principal cast except the role NTR played in Telugu was played by Gemini Ganeshan in Tamil. I am uploading all the songs from the Telugu movie here. These were ripped from a DVD. The quality is quite good. I tried to fill out the names of the singers for almost all the songs. A friend of mine helped me some. I am not convinced that these assignments are correct. If someone can help with this it is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

For the first time Rama Rao appeared as Lord Rama in this film in the dance drama song “Dushtudu Jooche Ninnu”. This has several verses, two by Ghantasala and three by Susheela. The drama ends with a duet. The verses by Ghantasala are “Kaavuna Naadu Keerthini” and “Theerpulache”. The verses by Susheela are “Agni Saakshiga Kori Pendlaadi Natti Mogade”, “Parama Dayaakara Pathitha Paavana”, and “Shiramuga Goodi Yundithimi”. The duet the drama ends with is “Murisenu Lokaalu Kanuma Ninu Joochi Devi”.

This film was remade in Hindi by Gemini Studios in 1960 as “Ghunghat”. It was a hit film.

Because of the number of songs in this Telugu film, I am uploading them in two back-to-back posts on request. Here is the first set of songs...
