There were two lyricists for this movie: Aziz Kashmiri and Wali Sahib.

Afaik... the first line of the mukhda goes like this:

Hi Everyone
I am looking for two songs 'Goonga tota bol pia' from a Punjabi movie that was released in the 70's or later. Its male lead was an actor with last name Kaul. This song was sung (I think) by Lata mangeshkar. Second song is from a movie that had Virender and Preety Sapru singing this duet some of whose words were 'Chunni meri malamal (Makhmal?) di shara ra ra'. If I remember,correctly there may have been a scene where Virender was driving a tractor in part of this song.Any ideas? Harjinder

Shaunki was a very popular folk singer ( Dhaadi) in the rural Punjab in the 40's, 50's and 60's. His voice had an unmatched resonant quality and his songs could be heard on loudspeakers in the villages all over Punjab.He was often regarded as too rural and most urban Punjabi music aficionados snubbed him and his songs. His songs have had a resurgence of popularity in the 1990's and later. Manmohan Waris one of the well known pop singers of today has sung some of his old songs and these recreations were really well liked by the Bhangra music fans. One song that Waris sang is " Aaja bhabhi jhoot lai peengh hularey laindi,nee aaja nande jhoot lai...' became very popular both in its audio and video versions. Some day I intend to upload the original Shaunki version and Waris version of this song. Problem is my lack of expertise in analog to digital conversions.

You are welcome. By The way these are the only two songs from this audio cassette that I can identify as belonging to 'Heer Syal'. These two and all other songs are marked as songs from the film 'Pagri Sambhal Jatta'.I am going to upload those next,( in the coming few days)and tag them as they are marked on this tape.If corrections are needed please let me know.I had purchased this ( home made?) audio cassette more than 20 years ago from an Indian grocery store in a suburb of Chicago.Harjinder

The voice is of the girl from Patiala who incidently was also asstt Music Director
to Hansraj Behl for some time. She has now settled down in USA.
She is Meenu Purshottam.
Movie was released in the year..1960 and directed by Majnoo.

Thanks for the song. I do have this song on audio tape, courtesy Mr. Urzung Khan. Right now I don't know how to manipulate newer version of ITunes to work with my analog to digital audio converter.Its name brand is Ion Mixmeister Tape 2 PC Converter. I think it is of German manufacture. From what I know, it seems to work only with I Tunes, and this version of I Tunes is now 'locked' to use the term from the message I get when I try to use it. Any suggestions or pointers will be appreciated. Miss Deewani has tried to help and I had I Tunes working for about a day but now it is locked again. Harjinder

Thank you so much. I've been looking for this song - and requesting it repeatedly - since October. There is indeed wobbling in the audio but its fine until I can get better audio. The songs of GA Chishti and Ghulam Haider from the early years of partition/independence are very difficult to get hold of. I mean films like Pheray, Shahida, Ghulam, Akeli, Bheegi Palkhein and Beqarar....

My knowledge of the IT side of audio is pretty poor, but I do wish you success in being able to convert these songs and uploading not just this song but others in the same tape....if this song is any indication, the rest should be collectors items too.....or perhaps Urzung Saab can upload.....

Two songs from me:

Neyun Nai Lana Oye from Laaray (1950), sung by Inayat Hussain Bhatti and Munawar Sultana. This was one of the earliest Pakistani films with music by GA Chishti and essentially the same team as the previous years superhit Pheray. Some Pheray (1949) songs were uploaded on this thread a few days back by Harjinder Saab and Hashmat Saab.

The second song is from Yamla Jatt (1969), another Pakistani film. The singer is the popular Bengali star Runa Laila.

Both songs mp3/128 kbps.

I don't unfortunately. The only two Pheray songs I have are Sanu Dass Ja (uploaded by you) and Kee Kitta Taqdeere (uploaded by Hashmat Saab, better copy hoped for from you).

I'm still looking for Menoo Rabb Di Sonh and Akhian Laveen Na from Pheray as well as the Shahida (1949) songs except Dar Bedar Phirte Hain....but have to be patient

Punjabi ( Indian) films from 50's that I can think of right now 'Bhaaiya ji, Kaudey Shah, Jugni, Posti, Madari,
Lachhi,Chhai,Vanjara, Phumman,Bhangra,Guddi,Yamla Jat, Heer Syal,& Chaudhry Karnail Singh'. There are some others that I am aware of but cannot right now recollect their names.
I know of some Pakistani Punjabi films of 50's like Laarey Pheray, Kartar Singh, Dulla Bhatti, Mahi Munda,Yakke Wali,Guddi Gudda,Heer,& Zulfan.
Miss Deewanee had posted a link of lists of movies in Indian languages that had pretty much all the Punjabi films from 40's (?) onwards. I had it on my favorites list but some computer glitch erased it. If anyone knows of the link I would also like to have it. Also I had posted a list on a thread started by Mr Oye Sonu.Harjinder

I left India in 1967 and lost touch with Indian movies. I do not know much about Punjabi movies that were released in 1970's and later. I do know a little bit about recent (Indian) Punjabi movies , i. e the ones that were released in the last ten years or so; the ones starring all the Manns; Harbhajan Mann, Gurdas Mann, & Babbu Mann etc. Please check out thus this wikipedia list provided by Miss Deewani (I had mentioned it above as the one I could not find). This may contain almost all the Punjabi movie names.

He also was music director for Punjabi 'Madari'. I think he was music director for also some other Punjabi movies too but I cannot recall their names right now. 'Phumman' is as far as I know a Sikh first name. This name is now mostly obscure and is used rarely if at all to name a child.
Also checking in a Punjabi dictionary,'Mahan Kosh' I just now found that Phumman means a tassel of silk or cotton. Harjinder

I didn't know Phumman was ever a name. The tassel of silk/cotton part is correct and I'm sure you've seen chappals with the decorative phumman (too often bright red or yellow!) in the front.

Even though it may be a copy Durrani sahab has sung it well. In one or two songs I have seen him struggle with the pronounciation but this one sounds nice to me. Chorus lady only has "koi na" to say but seems to have a sweet voice. I guess we wouldn't know who she is.

I have been under the impression that people in Pakistan's Peshawar area i.e. Suba Sarhad (or North West Frontier Province) speak and understand Punjabi well. I had read that Dillip Kumar could speak Punjabi well. All the Kapoors that I have seen or heard from Peshawar area are fluent in Punjabi. I have seen and heard Raj Kapoor use Punjabi proverbs in his T.V. Interviews. I remember him using this proverb ' Maan janendi sat, bhag naan dendi wand'( Mother can give birth to seven children but cannot equally distibute their luck or fortune). Recently on one T. V. program shown on an obscure Dish Network channel in a documentary the lead singer of Pakistani group' Junoon' had a conversation with a Mulla sahib from Peshawar. This Mulla sahib had a takhallus of 'Bijli ghar' alluding to his fiery sermons. He read a najm in tarannum near the end of their conversation and that najm also was in Punjabi.Considering all this and the way he sang these two Punjabi songs, I can assume with some validity that G. M Durrani was also a Punjabi speaker.Harjinder

A large number of Kashmiri's (punjabi speakers) settled in Peshawar, several generations before partition. They are called Pakhori (as are other groups like Punjabi settlers) and their punjabi dialect is still spoken in Peshawar....remember that centuries ago Maharaja Ranjit Singh did forcibly grab Peshawar from the Afghans and make it part of his empire.

In another large part of NWFP - Hazara - the language spoken is called hazara, but to my ear its just a less sweet form of punjabi. The former Pak President Ayub Khan was from that region.

In the case of the Kapoors, Prithviraj's father was in the police and was posted to both Peshawar and Central Punjab (I believe Sargodha/Bhalwal side) for stretches of time. Was he a Peshawari (read Kashmiri) who spoke punjabi or a punjabi who spoke Pushto? We would have to go back several generations before Prithviraj to known for certain.....its the same for Dilip as well. He could very well be of Kashmiri origin.

There were many punjabis settled in peshawar. I can tell this with 100% certainty. (All my grandparents are from there). Prithviraj Kapoor was a Punjabi only (my grandfather knew the family. Families were close knit then. Most people knew most people). There were Pashto speakers also in Peshawar and in some cases inter-marriage also happened between them. (My grandfather's grandmother was a Pashto speaking lady from Kabul for example). There was a huge population of Punjabis there who were NOT Kashmiries in many areas of Peshawar. They called themselves Pishori as opposed to Pakhori. Unfortunately post-partition all were forced to migrate or convert so their culture slowly faded away in Peshawar. These days of course Pashto is getting a big hold there due to obvious influx of Afghan refugees. From what I've heard of Dilip Sahab he is a Pathan.

Even in Durrani sahab's song Koi main jhooth boleya he's taking some efforts to pronounce "jhooth" and "dhela" a bit if you notice to get the accent right (especially on the first word).

This song is from Khursheed Anwar's first film Kurmai(1941). he doesn't get hinj pronounciation properly and seems to be making efforts. But his young voice is really sweet must say.

Thanks for the song. Never heard it before. Actually haven't heard much of Khursheed Anwar period. Like Frank Sinatra admired and wanted to emulate Bing Crosby, and eventually far surpassed him in fame and recognition, Rafi too admired GM Durrani. His two hindi songs - Neend Hamari Khwab Tumhare and Haath Seene Pe Jo Rakh Do Tho Qarar Aa Jaaye are immortal.

My reference to the Kashmiri settlers was just to show the geographical range of settlers/ethnicities in Peshawar. There are certainly a large number of Punjabis in Peshawar as well, but then Central Punjab is virtually adjacent to Peshawar - only 90 minutes from Rawalpindi by Motorway if you behave yourself!

Another very nice song. Sardul Kwatra was on a real roll with this film! I feel Shamshad's voice in both solos is far less "nasal" than in her hindi songs from the same period. Could it be because of the language? Anyways, really good to hear these songs...

I also feel that the so called nasal effect is not much in Hindi songs as well. Its more of a rare sonorous tonality in her voice rather than a nasal twang that defines her voice.
A famous singer/MD active now is definitely nasal though!

That is a made up video and mixed with the audio. I think
it orignally appeared in Youtube and copied therefrom. It
is still there. Shamshad's 'kankaan diyaan faslaan pakiyaan ne'
was also posted there in this way. It had a pic of an old
gramophone etc. It may still be there at Youtube.

Thanks for the songs. As far as I can tell male singer in Heer with Surinder Kaur is Asa Singh Mastana. In late 50's or early 60's I listened to Harcharan Singh Grewal live, singing with Narinder Biba in my village in an Akhara. I also remember listening to some of his recordings. He is not the singer in this recording. I am certain it is Asa Singh Mastana.Harjinder
