Yes I love that... Can someone explain exactly what "kali kamliwale" means... Okay just checked it out, have always wondered.. Kamli coat: A coat made from a coarse woolen blanket which, patched innumerable times, Meher Baba wore almost continuously over a period of years; now on display in the Museum Room on Meherabad Hill. In the "Yashomati Maiyya" song... it refers to Krishna... Interesting.... Gulzar seems to have deliberately used cultural images that haze the boundaries between Hindu and Muslim religious practices... "Kali dargah" "kali kamli wale" ... "ataria pe jhalar" ... Madhavi, I think "Kamali" is close to the word "Kambal" which is a kind of blanket. It is generally made of wool, is coarse and is supposed to protect from the winter, as you have mentioned. About Lord Krishna, I think its always believed that he was not the one with a fair complexion. Kala Kisan ji is a famous saying in the Northern part of India. Parag Please visit www.geetadutt.com

Why did Gulzar do this 'hazing'? Is it related to the character in the film? Has anyone seen the film?
Gulzar does get nostalgic about the pre-1947 undivided India very often. In his collection of poems, 'Pukhraaj', he has that lovely poem about the 'mehmaan' who come visiting from across the border... Self - belief is the most potent force.

Yes Gulzar does seem very nostalgic about it... I remember when Mani Ratnam's Bombay created such a furore about the Hindu Muslim romance, there was a lot of Kudos given to him for attempting such a bold theme... and he deserved it... At the time, mainstream cinema never touched this issue... However I remember in Lekin, Gulzar very quietly showed a Hindu-Muslim couple (Amjad Khan and Bina whatever her name was... ) beautifully. Now don't tell me you have not seen "Lekin" Btw, what is the poem about ... "Pukhraaj"? "This isn't right, this isn't even wrong." You have missed out Do dooni chaar, Ashirwaad and Rahgeer from whatever little I remember. Gulzaronline.com is a good reference for his filmography.

Since we are talking about Gulzar here, I would like to add something which I read in RMIM some time back.
There was a lot of discussion about his 2 songs from Anubhav. Many members posted their views about "Meri jaan mujhe jaan na kaho" and "Mera dil jo mera hota" The kind of word-play he has achieved in Meri jaan mujhe jaan na kaho is amazing. ( On a side note, Anubhav had another song penned by Kapil Kumar which is "Koi chupake se aake, sapane sula ke mujh ko jaga ke bole ke main aa raha hoon..."..Wow..kya baat hain ! Sapane sulake ..mujhko jagake...simply superb) Cheers Parag Please visit www.geetadutt.com

Yes I too sort of remeber that but he seems to have composed for so many albums before that... The whole Bimal Roy camp in Bandini later on went to become big names in their own right... Hrishikesh Mukherji, Gulzar and s'one else I cannot remember... "This isn't right, this isn't even wrong." Wolfgang Pauli (1900-1958) "There are no facts, only interpretations."
