(Jeetendra) Jeene Ki Raah (1969)

The great L.V. Prasad made many incredibly successful Hindi films based on South Indian hit movies. This movie, another big hit from his studio, was based on 1953 Telugu hit "Brathuku Theruvu". That film starred Nageshwara Rao and Savithri, the same hit team that gave "Devadasu" earlier that year. After "Jeene Ki Raah" hit the bull's eye, it was remade in Telugu, this time again with Nageshwara Rao but opposite Jayalalita. This was in 1972. The name of that movie was "Bharya Biddalu".

"Jeene Ki Raah" had a fine performance by the beautiful and radiant Tanuja. It also had some fine music to go with it. Most of the songs were very popular. The film fetched LP the Best Music award from Filmfare. The song "Aap Mujhe Achhe Lagne Lage" by Lata also won the Best Female Singer award from Filmfare. My favorites, apart from the songs by Lata, are both of the solos by Rafi Saab. I don’t think anyone else can sing these types of songs today.

Here are these beautiful songs from this movie from an original soundtrack album; I am uploading them on request...

(Sunil) Ek Phool Char Kante (1960)

Sunil Dutt did not make too many comedies. That laugh riot, "Padosan (1968)", was mostly a Kishoreda-Mahmood movie. This film however was a light comedy. He plays a young man whose center of attraction is Waheeda (Ek Phool). But in order to marry her, he has to first convince all four of her uncles (Char Kante) that he is the right choice. The only problem here is that they all have different and conflicting requirements on who should be their niece's proper husband.

David Dhawan, who is notorious in making hit movies based on films from other languages, did copy this movie in his 2000 version of "Dulhan Hum Lejayenge" which starred Karishma Kapoor and Salman Khan. Only difference was that Karishma in this movie had only three uncles.

"Ek Phool Char Kante" (EPCK) had great music by the incomparable Shankar & Jaikishan team. During this period of their professional career anything they turned out was on the mark. Theirs was an energetic team and their exuberance seeped through into their songs as rich melodies. This film has one of my all-time favorites of Mukesh in "Matwaali Naar". Mukesh sings his heart out pouring life into Shailendra's rich lyrics making it an endearing and enduring classic. EPCK also has a duet by Lata & Talat that is uncharacteristically for Talat, sung in a very racy style. But that song "Dil Aye Dil" still is very entertaining. There are two rock n roll songs sung in English by Iqbal Singh. They are also delightful.

Because of the number of songs in this album, I am uploading them on request in back-to-back two posts. Here is the first set...

(Rajendra) Ye Rishta Na Tootay (1981)

For some reason or other Suresh Wadkar disappeared from the singing scene altogether. Somehow he fell out of favor of most music directors. It is too bad. He has such a great voice too. For example, take a look at the songs from this album. He has two duets in this. But the standout song is the one with Anuradha Paudwal. He is absolutely fabulous in the song "Rim Jhim". Here is this and other songs from this album...

(Sunil) Usne Kaha Tha (1960)

Here is another fine film that came from the production house of Bimal Roy. This one was produced by Bimalda and was directed by Moni Bhattacharjee. Like any movie by Bimalda it has all the ingredients that make his movies so special; good story, great unfolding of the story, superb characterizations, brilliant black and white photography, and melodious music. This movie has all of this but somehow it doesn't give the feeling of satisfaction. It falls short of the high expectations of a true Bimalda movie. In the end you remember it for its brilliant craftsmanship but the beats are missing from where its heart is.

Salilda composed several great songs for this movie. The songs like "Aaha Rim Jhim", "Balkhaati Sharmaati", and "Machalti Arzoo" are very melodious to listen to. But for me the standout song is Maqdoom Mohiuddeen's memorable "Jaanewaale Sipaahi Se Poochho". This inspired song was made more memorable because of the soulful singing of the pair Sabita Banerjee and Mannada. It lingers in your thoughts for a long long time.

Here are these beautiful songs from this movie from an original soundtrack album, uploading on request...

Thanks for uploading Usne Kaha Tha songs Swarapriya. I sometimes wonder how difficult can it be for singers to sing for Salilda. Every song has something new to offer.

Swarapriya, thanks a ton for the "Usne Kaha Tha" songs. I used to have a tape that had three Salil C. films on it including this one, but seem to have lost it, and was looking for these songs in good quality. As has happened so *many* times earlier, the search stopped at one of your threads!

Thanks and warm regards,
Abhay
