It was the captain v/s captain match at Basseterre. The ex-students of Kind Edward's school of Johannesburg , Graeme Smith of South Africa and Ryan Watson of Scotland, came face to face yesterday. And, it was Smith who contributed for the significant 7-wicket victory of South Africa over Scotland in the 15th ODI of the ICC World Cup 2007. Captain Smith, who won the Player of the Match title yesterday, scored his personal world cup highest with 91 runs helping the team achieve the target, 188 score, in just 24 overs.

It was South Africa who won the toss and decided to field. Scotland team had presented a good start with Watts and Haq scoring 24 and 13. Haq was picking up momentum when he was caught by Boucher in the 12th over. Watts followed next yielding to the powerful bowling of Langeveldt at the beginning of the 15th over when wicket keeper Boucher grabbed a wonderful catch.

Inspite of the initial adversities, the Scotland team moved forward leaving its hope in the team's captain. It took a long time for the captain to get a grip on the game. He did not score anything in the initial 12 balls, but soon struck a wonderful 4 as a response to the aggressive ball from Hall. The strike continued with three more 4's following. However, the captain's spirit doomed when he got run out when his partner Brown started for a single. The fielder de Villers got a timely grab of the ball, and before the captain could finish it up, the ball reached the target; Watson was declared run out. A great miss for the Scottish fans.

The highest scorer from Scotland yesterday was DR Brown. He scored 45 runs off 64 balls and remained not out till the end of 50 overs when the team achieved a 186 score. Smith, Blain and Hoffmann had scored 15, 23, and 18 respectively while Hamilton and Callum had to be satisfied with 4 and 1 respectively.

South African bowler AJ Hall showed the best bowling performance by grabbing three Scottish wickets, while Langeveldt managed two wickets. Pollock got the credit of one wicket.

After the innings break, the South Africans entered with their typical toughness. Captain Smith had decided the day for himself. He opened with Villiers, and started striking the boundaries with ease. Blain and Nel entered, trying their hands at the captain. The story was not different. The South African captain flourished and reached his highest score of 91 in World Cup after hitting a sweetly timed 6. Soon after, he was caught by Rogers at the end of 23rd over. It was 178 for 3 for South Africa then. Just 9 more runs to go!

The runs came in just two balls from Kemp, one fantastic 4 followed by a super 6. And South Africa won the match!

De Villiers of South Africa had a superb performance this time. Though he could not contribute any runs in the team's last match against Netherlands, De Villiers compensated with a decent 62 runs off 45 balls with nine 4's and two 6's. Prince and Kemp contributed 21 and 12 each.

With this match, South Africa earned a total 4 points in the match while Scotland, with its two consecutive defeats, could not make it to the Super Eights.
