Reeth,
i am glad that you started this thread. Brando was one of the best performers in Hollywood. with Godfather, he proved that age hardly mattered to him when he wanted to steal the show. Jack Nicholson was his neighbour and dear friend till his last breath and took great care of him when he was suffering in last days. Jack is another great actor. perhaps the best imho. i am looking forward to your post about him. HUMPHREY BOGART ( December 25,1899 - January 14, 1957
Humphrey bogart is one of hollywoods most enduring legends and remains one of the most beloved stars of all times. While a major celebrity during his own lifetime,Bogart's appeal has grown in the years following his death. He has played the quintessential tough guy and his inimitable screen persona continues to appeal all. Sensitive yet masculine , cynical yet romantic, hardbitten yet enigmatic...his various portrayls have combined to create a larger than life image which remains the archtype of the contemporary Antihero. He was respected as an actor by all his co stars. With Lauren Bacall in " To have or have not" (1944) With Catherine Hepburn in the Oscar winning "African queen"(1952) With Ingrid Bergman in " Casablanca" with Ava Gardner in " Barefoot contessa"(1954) Humphrey bogart played mostly thuggish gangsters in the 1930's.By the 40's Bogart had graduated to playing cynical, tough detectives, silent suffering romantic(casablanca) in many of his movies. He won an oscar for his offbeat role as a drunken boat pilot in " THE AFRICAN QUEEN". He had been a smoker and drinker for many years, had a cancerous growth in the esophegus which was operated upon in 1956, however he died in 1957. Bogart was married 4 times, the last of which was the happiest,to his co-star LAUREN BACALL in movies like "To have or have not" and "The big sleep". She was 25 years his junior. Some of his major movies: The big sleep(1946) The maltese falcon(1941) Casablanca(1942) Dark passage(1947) To have or have not(1944) Sabrina(1954) The caine mutiny(1954) The African queen(1951) In a lonely place(1950) The desperate hours(1955) In all he acted in 75 feature films... Humphrey Bogart had turned 57 when he died on January 14 1957, after falling into a coma. Humphrey bogart is quite irreplaceable. There will never be another like him. Regarding the Last Tango...this was a movie of pure carnal relationship between the lead actors. Defnitely, it couldn't pass the Censor Board. But having seen it on the video, I think it was a boring movie - as one critic exclaimed: Even with the butter it was a boring movie. NASIR. NASIR

For me, one of the greatest actors i have ever seen from the yester years is Paul NewMan for his diversified roles, the ease and panache with which he wud carry out his role was fabulous.
Some of his movies like Cool Handluke, The String,The Hustler were a treat to watch. From the recent periods, i love Tom Hanks. He has really represented the diversity of an actor who can take up any challenging role and carry out in an emotional manner which lefts an indelible expression on one's mind. Some of his worth watching movies are Philadelphia, Cast Away, The Forrest Gump, The Green Mile, Sleepless in Seattle. |
