Sita Ji

I'm not downloading because I have the songs already but just wanted to say that this film is one of Khayyam and Mukesh's finest moments.

Sita ji,

Thanks for the album of songs of "Phir Subah Hogi". I was all poised to do it next in my "Raj Kapoor" thread. You saved me from doing this. This movie happens to be one of my all time favorites, and I would like to share some of my thoughts here. I originally prepared these for my thread but there is no point in doing it there.

Here are some of my thoughts about this great movie ...

This probably is one of the best Hindi movies, aside from Guru Dutt’s “Pyaasa (1957)”, ever made in India. There were so may facets to this movie that combine to make it a great movie experience, that watching it makes it a relentless and an unforgettable sensual experience at the same time. One can write volumes about creations like this, but we can single out some of the highlights to point out its greatness. I will write about the following here: (1) story, (2) acting, (3) music, and (4) lyrics.

1. Story: The movie was based on the famous Russian novel “Crime and Punishment” written by Fyodor Dostoevsky. That novel was published in 1866. But the story extends the novel as an emotional plea for social justice and makes a humanitarian and compassionate political commentary. On one side an independent India saw the attraction of big cities sprawled with excitement, jobs, wealth, and opportunities. On the other side it also saw the greedy sprouting of crime, slums, injustice, and exploitation. The movie shows this latter part of post independence India.

2. Acting: The movie is given Raj Kapoor an opportunity to exhibit his talents as an actor in the role he played in this movie where he has to react to not only external conflicts but convincingly bring out internal conflicts to the surface. The role demanded to show the suffering of guilt and its toll of emotional turmoil on him. Raj carries this with unparalleled aplomb. This probably was one of the most wonderfully insightful performances of his illustrious career.

3. Music: Raj Kapoor originally wanted Shankar & Jaikishan to provide music for this film. However, Sahir was adamant about having someone compose music who read Dostoevsky’s novel because he strongly felt that only that person could provide such musical score. Khayyam was selected. Also, to please Raj, Khayyam composed six different ways of the title song. Raj was so impressed that he agreed Khayyam to be the music director and asked him to choose the tune he liked the best. The musical scores of this film happens to be not only one of the memorable ones by Khayyam but also one of the memorable ones put together for an Indian movie. Almost every song is a gem. Especially the title song done by Asha and Mukesh with haunting score, deeply rich words constructed by Sahir, and evocatively picturized stays with you forever. Khayyam never got his due as a music director that spanned a 50-year career. Yet songs from many of his movies have stood the test of time and have been perennial pleasers.

4. Lyrics: Sahir was coming off from the great success he enjoyed just about year ago with Guru Dutt’s classic “Pyaasa”. Here Sahir was presented with another opportunity to extend similar sentiments, pathos, and sufferings through the powerful words only he could construct. It is clear that Sahir was not happy with what was going on in the society in the post independent India as a whole and the despair, disgust, decadence, deceit, and disillusionment spilled over from the message “Pyaasa” passed on into this movie as well. Even amidst such hopelessness, a ray of hope is always there, like the burst of sunshine amidst clouds, because in the end he concludes that “woh subah kabhi to aayegi”. Poets like Sahir only happen perhaps once in a millennium.

Interestingly, for all its glorified reality, this movie never got any awards. So many people who were responsible to make this happen went unrecognized. Most of the awards for 1958 went to Bimal Roy’s poem of love, “Madhumati”. Best actor award for that year went to Dev Anand for “Kala Panai”. The movie not only was nominated or considered for any awards , but also on the top of it, was a commercial failure.

The song "Woh Subah" was uploaded by one of the Forum members all five parts combined. I am uploading that song here. It is at 192 Kb/s. Music: Khayyam. Singers: Asha Bhosle & Mukesh. Lyrics: Sahir Ludhianvi. MP3 format.

One more song is missing from the above uploads. This one is by Mohd. Rafi. The song is "Sab Ke Ho Khair Baba". Music: Khayyam; Lyrics: Sahir Ludhianvi; Bit rate: 192 K/s; Format MP3.

Again thanks for sharing with us one of my favorite albums. Here is the song "Woh Subah" in all of its parts and the song by Rafi Saab ...

Also, there is one song that is listed but not available. It is sung by Mohd. Rafi & Mukesh. The song is "Phirte The Jo Bade Hi Sikandar Bane Hue". If anyone has it please kindly share.

This song has already been uploaded in Sita's post: check the song titled "jis pyar mein". The line you have quoted is the prelude.

Warm regards,
Abhay

Thank You for the writeup Swarapriya - if not for your little notes people like me would not have appriciated all the hard work and smart thinking which went in to filmi music & the film itself....

Your writeup on top of Sita's uploads was aptly "Sone Pe Suhaga" smile.gif

Gosh - just noticed that you are Swarapriya and not Swarnapriya !!!!!! And I must confess - that is the most befitting ID I have ever come across smile.gif
