Hamara Forums _ Ravi _ Ravi - The Living Legend

Posted by: akbaralibhai Sep 17 2006, 11:32 PM

I will be posting songs of one of Ravi's best albums "Door Ki Awaz" soon.

Music director Ravi, as he is known, has scored music for over 200 films in different Indian languages and most of them are popular even today. He has received various awards from different forums and was honoured by the Government of India with the Padmashree in 1971. Pandit Ravi Shankar Sharma was given the Sanskriti Kalashree award for 2006 recently in Chennai. In my opinion Ravi still remains the "Unsung Hero" as pointed out by Mahesh Ji in one of his posts.

Ravi (Ravishanker Sharma in real life) is one of those few composers in whose compositions, melody, rather than orchestral embellishment, predominates. Having started his career with Goel's 'Vachan' in 1955. After the success of 'Chaudhvin Ka Chand' (1960) he was ranked with the major composers of that time. His hummable songs such as 'Ek woh bhi Diwali thi..' sung by Mukesh, 'Wafa jinse ki bewafa ho gaye..' sung by Mukesh are as much popular as 'Sub kuchh loota ke hosh men aye to kya kiya..' sung by Lata, which is profound and steeped in sadness.

Ravi who came to Bombay in 1950 to be a singer had no formal training in classical music. Yet as a music director he composed some of the most memorable classical songs such as 'Lage na mora jiya, sajana..'sung by Lata and 'Darshan do Ghanshyam..' by Hemant Kumar, The living legend owed his gratitude to Hemant Kumar, who took him under his wings, spotting his talent from a crowd of chorus singers. Ravi said he had a special affinity to South, having worked for Venus Productions, Gemini and AVM.

Sudha and Manna Dey. His song 'Jeevan jyot jale..' sung by Asha from 'Grihasthi' won him the Sur Singar Samsad award for the best classical song of the year. It is not an exaggeration to say that Ravi's songs have been beggars' delight as the latter survive by singing his melodies such as 'Ek paisa dede o babu..', (Vachan), 'Garibon ki suno woh tumhari sunega..' (Dus Lakh). During the 33 years of his career, Ravi had his share of success. Unlike some of the modern composers he has not become a part of the rat race. Producers who care for sweetness in melodies still come to him.

Looking back on life, Ravi gives credit to music director Hemant Kumar and director Devendra Goel for having shaped his career as a music director and acknowledges grateful thanks to his wife (she died in 1988) for having stood by him when he was a struggling 'nobody'. When he feels lonely Ravi gets lost in listening to the melodious music of the 40's. It never fails to rejuvenate him and inspire him to create something worthwhile.

Award for music director

Staff Reporter - June 29, 2006

"Pandit Ravi Shankar Sharma has scored music for over 200 films "For me, Chennai is a good and auspicious place. It is home to some of the great filmmakers and musicians."

CHENNAI: Veteran music director Pandit Ravi Shankar Sharma was given the Sanskriti Kalashree award for 2006 recently.

Music director Ravi, as he is known, has scored music for over 200 films in different Indian languages and most of them are popular even today. He has received various awards from different forums and was honoured by the Government of India with the Padmashree in 1971.

Mr. Ravi said he was happy that he was in Chennai where he met A.V. Meiyappan and other stalwarts of Indian cinema. "For me, Chennai is a good and auspicious place. It is home to some of the great filmmakers and musicians."

Chennai residents have a reputation of being lovers of good music, said AVM Saravanan, who was the first recipient of the award.

He said he found many songs of the director mesmerising.

Every year, the association gives Kalashree awards and the list of recipients include AVM Saravanan, S.P. Balasubramanium and Vyjayathimala Bali.

Sanskrithi members sang some 20 songs composed by Ravi, much to the appreciation of the audience.

Haan he is Bombay Ravi here and is very well respected. He has reused some of his Hindi tunes but has alos done some fantastic semiclassical stuff. Mallu music until v recently remained traditional without the Western/Hindi/Tamil influence and the crazy dancing.

Akbar Ali Bhai

Many thanks for the Door Ki Aawaz album

This was Ravi's one of most popular albums during 60s.

The song which became most famous was the birthday song, Hum Bhi Agar Bachche Hotey. For years, it held sway as the most popular among birthday songs. The other one, which became popular was "Ek Musafir Ko Duniya Mein Kya Chahiye", particularly one of its antras "O Motey Lala Tuney Kiya Hai Kaisa Chhal, Ticket Tera Single Magar Tu Double" ,picturiseed on Johny Walker pushing a fatty Lala to get some space for himself in a train compartment. For many travellers on Mumbai's cowded local trains, this antra came particularly handy.

My personal favourite is "Husn Se Chand Bhi Sharmaya Hai, Teri Soorat Ne Ghazab Dhhaya Hai", Joy Mukherjee singing for his pretty woman, Saira Banu. Reminds me of another perennial favourite by the same Rafi - Rajendra K - Ravi combo, "Husn Waale Tera Jawab Nahi".

Vinatge Album. Classy music and what can one say about Rafisaab's singing, he gives full justifice (as always) to the compositions.
The best songs of various MD's are the ones that Rafisaab has sung.

Well done AkbarAlibhai

Posted by: sri Sep 25 2006, 10:01 AM

Thanks so much, Akbaralibhai - for your 'usual' high quality uploads. Fantastic.

Ravi must have been very pleased with this film - because he managed to have his favourite singer Rafi in 7 out of 9 songs. This was one of the many films in which he worked with Devendra Goel. This is what Ravi had to say about Goel :

"Devendra Goel saab gave me my independent break in Vachan (1955) and worked with me all the way till the last film for his banner, Aadmi Sadak Ka in 1977. He would always tell anyone who pressurized him to change his music director, "Meri film chale na chale, Ravi ka music hit hai!"
We did about a dozen films together, including Narsi Bhagat, Pyar Ka Sagar, Dus Lakh, Door Ki Awaz, Ek Phool Do Mali, Dhadkan and Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka. Some of these films were not produced by him
."
