Wow!!!! Mandrake....So Borivali (W) is your den!!! Gr88 to know that man.......Hope we all meet up once.....And yes......with what.....the monsoon having finally arrived with a bang....the atmosphere would just be perfect for sitting together...over chai, snacks, chit-chat and music.....hehehe...

And man......you enjoy star-gazing from ur telescope??? WOW!!! Once upon a time...(during my school days) I was damn serious on taking up astronomy in the future......Continued my serious readings and gazings and all such stuff till my tenth......then, I went on to take commerce....and with that..died all my precious dreams of astronomy....hehehehe... But yes......I haven't lost that interest yet.....Still, whenever some so-called 'celestial wonders....and the "once-in-trillion-years" sort of happenings occur once in a while....(as per news sources...) I mean......the comet sightings....eclipses...Mars and other planets passing close-by.....and other similar celestial occurences......I do take my Binoculars...and go to the terrace.....whatever the time be....(Gen'lly its the night)......And to my bad luck......have never seen any of the occurences.....as the sky is too cloudy.....or too polluted......that nothing can be seen........At the max.....only 4-5 stars can be spotted over the Chembur sky......invariably due to the heavy pollution here......

I used to live in Babhai Naka [ Dream bldg ] Studied in St. Annes I had come to Borivli a couple of months ago [ after 13 yrs ] It has changed sooooooo much. Unbelievable !! I was overwhelmed to see the bldg I grew up in.........and the people.....they r still so warm and down to earth

I was born in Solapur. When I was 2 months young (not old ) went to Delhi; when 5, to Hyderabad; when 9, to Mumbai - Sion. Then Andheri (east), then Vileparle (w). Then Belgaum (for engg), then back to Vileparle. Then Borivli... Still atleast one more shift is possible
In between, gave up a possible shift to the US... but that's another story

I am in Borivali East - for last 4 years - next to National Park in KULUPWADI just a couple of buildings away from the highway.
I was born in Bombay and lived in King Circle and Sion in childhood ( VEENA building behind ROOPAM theatre which now is a mutiplex if I am right) and my mid teens to early twenties was in Chennai - then few years in middleeast-Dubai and and a decade in Dahisar and finally in Borivali East.
Yes - I know all the area you are mentioning in Borivali West - almost every week I am in that area since I go to IC colony.

I generally participate in CHIT O CHAT and Wall papers, Jokes and Puzzles. Since my computer is in office, I cannot u/l or d/w songs. I was introduced to the forum thro a friend who knew my passion for HFM as well as Tamil Music. I have a fairly good collection - mostly popular ones.
Enough of my background now.

I speak Hindi, English, Marathi. Studied Bangla, Kannada, French. Understand Gujarati.
Would love to learn as many languages (even a broken understanding is better than nothing [my favourite phrase always is "anything is better than zero"]) as possible.
Tamil, never got a chance as I do not have any south Indian friends in a big way. My loss, as I think most of them are very friendly, very well read and mingle easily.

My thamizh is too bad even to attempt the various queries for translations !!

Most of my Thamizh knowledge (as against Palakkad tamil knowledge) is SUN TV and various movies and my current roommates from TN ! ..... then i test it by watching old Sivaji movies ... and come up bewildered what language he speaks !! well at times, even Nagesh bewilders me with his Thamizh ! :-(

By the way, yaaraavudhu anniyan paartheengala ? inge singappooril anniyan nanraagha odikkondu irukku .... naan paarthittu-illai aanaal.... :-( randu paatu romba pidichidhu .... iyengaar veettu azhaghae and sukumaari ..... (after all sung by bombay based tamilians)

Well..True.....as you said......If I was really serious about my music....I should have known atleast some bit of Telugu, since most of the Krithis are in that language in Carnatic music. (Not necessarily to restrict that rule to Vocalists......should definitely be applicable for instrumentalists as well.....but anyways....since I've learnt both......I've to accept that short-coming of mine.... ) Btw.....Telugu is not the ONLY language in which Carnatic compositions are based........there are compositions in many other languages too.....like Kannada, Tamil, Sanskirit, Hindi etc. that form an 'essential' part of Carnatic music... (I'm not talking about odd..stray Hindi songs sung by Carnatic artistes in concerts.....There are PROPER Krithis composed in Hindi too.....For eg. Some Krithis composed by Swathi Thirunal.....in Hindi....like "Geeta Dhuni ki taka dheem - Thillana" and "Vishweshwara Darshan kara chal man tum kaashi" etc. are very famous, beautiful Carnatic Krithis.......Btw.....Swathi Thirunal has composed in many languages.....Tamil, Malayalam, Sanskirit, Hindi, Telugu etc. Truly a very accomplished composer...... )

If only I had been there.......Especially I'm a BIG fan of L.Subramaniam....know him personally......Anyways.....he's performing here in Chembur (Fine Arts auditorium) on the 22nd......so will be meeting him there anyways.... Oh ! ... ithra bhaashayla krithis irukku-nu theriyavae illai.... most surprising is hindi krithis .... u mean krithis in hindi originally composed in carnatic (as against in hindustani) ?? wow.. never knew that...! Interesting to note that Swati Thirunaal has composed in Hindi ... He was basically from Kerala right ? did he travel north to learn Hindi ? I thought hindi is almost non-existent in the South .... Or maybe the case was differnt in his times .... and Hindi's absence down south is kind of politically motivated !?

Anyways, anyone has an idea how the 4 south Indian languages came about ? I know little of Telugu and can understand Malayalam pretty much .. both have many words common to Sanskrit .... so I believe they must've arisen from Sanskrit .... Although, its quite surprising that their scripts are nowhere close to devnagiri (Sanskrit) sciprt ...... recently, Tamil was declared on par with Sanskrit... and it is generally believed that Tamil originated independently from Sanskrit ... Is it so ? I've never studied Tamil as such.. so my working knowledge of Tamil literature is practically zero .... Would be great if someone could clarify.

Also, how close is Sinhalese to 'proper' Tamil ? Any common roots ? Forgive me for my ignorance!

Well now I know why my roomies look at me strangely when I speak fluent Hindi and plead ignorance to Tamil literature (does that qualify me unfit to be a Tamilian !?) ..and well, we all know how Shiv Sena treats Southies in Bombay ! Shyaam yaar.. kya hoga apna... na ghar ka, na ghat ka !

Oh yes Vivek.......there are as many languages used in composing Krithis in CARNATIC MUSIC. Yes, Hindi too.......(Check out the examples that I had given in my earlier post......they are PROPER ORIGINAL CARNATIC compositions in the Hindi language) Yes, Swathi Thirunal was a very versatile composer, has composed many many songs (all possible forms in Carnatic - Geetham, Varnam, Keerthanam/Krithis, Padams, Javalis, Thillanas and all possible stuff.......and in as many languages that I had mentioned......Truly genius....) Yes....He was a very learned person, a scholar, a linguist, who knew many languages.

He had mastered Sanskrit and his mother-toungue Malayalam. Apart from that, he did extensive learning on Telugu, mastered that too.....Then also went on to master Tamil, Kannada, Hindi & even MARATHI and also the non-Indian languages English & Persian!!! (Since his childhood, his maternal aunt, who brought him up, made sure that the child got a very strong educational background, and had many scholars from various genres/languages come to the palace and teach the child)

Swathi Thirunal has many songs in all these 'Indian' languages to his credit. (His Marathi and Hindi compositions have been sung in concerts by respected musicians like Kumar Gandharava and others) He also learnt Hindustani music in an extensive manner........has also composed many Hindustani classical songs...... All this in such a short period.....he became a Prince (of the Travancore State - During the early period of British Raj) at the age of 16......it was at this time that he began composing a lot......At the same time, he never let the administration take a back seat. He was a very great and respected administrator. And did such a humungous, priceless contribution to All forms of Indian music, as well as Adminstrative setup. And all this in the short span of 18 years. He passed away at a very young age of 34(Period 1813-1847). And in between the 18 years (from the age of 16 till his death), the extensive amount of his research and contribution to our music is simply amazing.....Speaks volumes about the greatness and versatality of this great composer...... And yes Vivek, you definitely are a 'qualified' Tamilian..... And Nimmi too, as she was born in TN, and speaks/reads/writes tamil impeccably.......Though the same cannot be said about me.......I'm born and brought up in Bombay (Maharashtra), but my marathi ain't that strong.... (Initially, I was damn damn weak in Marathi, all through my school life.......its only of late, that I've managed to pick-up a bit...and improve my hold on that language) So, statehood-wise speaking, I'm supposed to be a Maharashtrian, but mother-toungue wise, can't really say what........since all Pallakad-Iyers category are from Kerala, I'm a Keralite... and since we speak Palakkad Tamil....we have to give our mother-toungue as Tamil.... My God.......so many confusions!!!!! Still not sure waht I'm supposed to be "Qualified" As...

But yes, being a Pallakad iyer, has innumerable advantages........you are a tamilian as well as a keralaite.... and picking up both the languages (as we don't 'speak' either) (in their 'original' forms...is also a 'bit' easier, as you know a bit of both, conversing in Palakkad Tamil.... ) That has definitely been a huge advantage to me......picked up tamil from TV.....(my only source for Non-Palakkad Tamil)......and of late, since college days - Tamilian friends too, while Malayalam, have been hearing Dad speak impeccable Malayalam......have interacted with many many Malayalees all through my life.....have been brought up (still am) in a bldg. with more Keralites than anyhting else.....so hearing them since choldhood.......all these factors.......helped me to 'understand' it to a very 'basic' extent. Then only when I joined by First year of graduation, I apporached some of my Malayalee friends in class, and said.......look, I wanna learn it properly, so, I'll try conversing with you ppl in Malayalam always.....and you correct me, whenever I go wrong..........And yes.....in those 3 yrs.....I did improve my spoken Malayalam to a great extent......BIG ACHIEVEMENT!!!! Something to really feel proud about....... At home, parents prefer watching Tamil channels on TV, and only once in a bluest moon, do they themselves watch Malayalam. While, of late, to improve my language, as well as due to my increased interest and liking for that language over others, I enjoy watching Malayalam, when alone. But one thing, YES, I'm tooooooo shy to let my parents know that I know even a 'bit' of tamil or malayalam. (...Oh yes.....I'm toooo shy at home...have never even sung or played music in front of them in my life.....despite them having begged me for it..... )

So in their presence, I talk to other Tamilians/Malayalees only in english/hindi (some other common language).....and only when they are not around.......does my courage shoot up.....and my language-barriers are broken...Same is the case with my experimental Marathi too...... In your words Vivek.......Enniki Marathi angene 'bhangiyaaitu' samsaarikyaan arinyooda......

Lata nee Vathaa Kozhamabu recipe kettey illaiyo? I took out Amma's recipe book and copying the info from it..

Try panni paarungo.. I havent tried doing it..(coz I get vathaa kozhambo mix from Grand Sweets Chennai ) - Their puzhiyodarai mix is superb too!

She says fry mustard (1 tsp), curry leaves( 1 twig or more), a pinch of perugaayam, red chillies (4 or 6) Thogarey paruppu (1 tbsp), Kadala paruppu (1 tbsp), 1/2 tsp vendiyam in a little oil. 1 marble poozhi juice. Grind to a fine consistency. If you have sundakkai, or karela - mebbe 1 or 1 and 1/2 piece of karela(koncham fine chop pannindu - marinate with salt for say 5 mins. then squeeze out of the juice (usually it is the bitter part of karela). Put the mixture with the fried veggies and add some water and cook till you get the vataa kozhambu consistency.

Mix with rice and eat.. I think GKS' mom might know a better recipe of it. Yo GKS enge da poyi tholainje?

Ohoh......quite a similar case here too.......Amma is unwell...and seems I've caught it from her. And....onnavudu....climate inga seriyillai.....romba mosama irukku.....And I seriously think.....we've got sick due to consumption of bad water......stomach problems.... And adukku mela....netakkyi ennaku fever vera irundudu.....But the problem is......Amma was so unwell......if I also announce myself as sick..then difficult to manage at home......Therefore...none of them at home know about it......

EHEHEHEH!!! Illai Nimii.....Idu ponnu vishayamaa irukale..... (luckily... ) Naan high BP sonen le??? Adu ketu purinjirukaname onakku.....Ponnu vishayam + seruppadi vaangeerunden na Low BP aayirkume.. Neeyum onnodu scientific inferences um!!!

This was something much different.....some unwanted politics and stuff...which had me extremely stressed.....for the last few days......now things are slowly looking to get back to normal........

Lata.....naan poonal ellam maatinen.......rendu naalum japam and other rituals ellam panninen.. Illai....naan duvussam Sandhyavandanam onnum pannaradu kadayaadu...... (setting a very bad example..I know.. ) Aanaal......duvussam Gayatri Javippen.....and many other stotras and stuff too.... but lost the practice of doing Sandhyavandanam daily....

Very interesting point Vivek......seems I missed something real special yesterday......Would have loved to see that.....AB pronouncing kozhikode perfectly...... Definitely some food for thought.....for other non-south-Indians......who struggle badly with the 'zha'.....so much so that......many south-Indians too are following suit.......and using "La" and such stupid 'substitutes' to pronounce the words!!!!

No Vivek......I was not talking about the Tamil & Malayalam 'remakes' of KBC (like SarathKumar's - Kodeeswaran and the likes)........

This time what I saw was...... A TAMIL "DUBBED" version of KBC.......that is......the episode video is that of the original Hindi version only...with AB in the lead......talking Hindi.........But.....they have dubbed the audio in Tamil.......So a guy talks all AB's parts in tamil....but he's done the voice-modulations so well....that its actually looking as if its AB ( I mean.....AB's movements and body language have been perfectly kept in mind while doing the voice modulations in dubbing.......) LOL...that looked funny!!!

Nimii.......you are lucky to have someone like that at home.....who abstains you from watching Tamil channels.......eekksss......yuck yuck They have real crap...over-the-head serials..........Ask me......here Amma-Appa used to watch a host of Tamil serials......all one after the other crappy stuff......Me yet lucky to be sane and alive at the same time!!!
