Hamara Forums _ Mohd Rafi _ Cleaned Rafi Songs

Posted by: kistin Jun 5 2005, 02:03 AM

Hello,

In this topic, I'll just try to share my work with all brothers/sisters in this forum.

My work consists of obtaining as clean old Hindi songs as possible, because I have a project of presenting the best of them to Ambassador of India, his excellency, in my country, Turkey.

I have worked on this project about one year. Now, I have approximately 40-50 songs cleaned in my archive.

Two days ago, I downloaded a Rafi song elsewhere in this forum and working on it about 6 hours I obtained a cleaned version and I want to share it with all.

The song is Aaj Socha Hai Khayaalon Mein

I would be happy if you criticize it

Regards

Hello Kistin,
Its very nice of you to join the forum and get to know one side of the India's multi-cultural aspect through Old Hindi movie songs and all the best with your remastering project. I will upload whatever songs I have based on your requests. I am sure others will help you too.
I have, however, one request of you. Is there anyway you can upload that song "Aaj Socha Hai Khayalon Mein" by Rafi & Sulakshana in its RAW form ( WITHOUT any kind of remastering ) or cleaning? I am building a collection of my own and have a home studio where I do remastering. Your version sounds nice and I would like to see if I can do a better job. In that case, I'll even share it with you. Thank you in advance.

Thanks Guru for your panegyric reply.
I use two programs, one is Audacity v1.2.3 and the other one is Nero Wave Editor.
It takes approximately 6 hours, because I re-listen to the song entirely after each process is done.
Also thank you for the song info.

Thanks for the reply Yasir.
My plan is to prepare a gift CD, composed of the best of cleaned old Indian songs, and present it to the Ambassador of India in my coutry in late June 2005.

I'm not pretentious but just want to have a humble chance just for the sake of cultural relations and fellowship.

Shergill brother, my aim is not commertial! I started this project just because I like Indian songs. Project itself is my own preference.

I never clean a song which I don't like, except some kind requests, as during cleaning I listen to the entire song about 25 to 30 times! This is really a matter of endurance... So, its impossible if you don't like the song, at least for me, as I am not a young men. I guess that I am elder than many people in this forum.

Posted by: kistin Jun 12 2005, 04:19 AM

Thanks Hits for the correction and supplementary information.

Posted by: kistin Jun 12 2005, 04:28 AM

Yasir brother, I did share the name of the software just following Guru's and your previous posts. Didn't see it?

Anyway, in fact the software is not the main key to cleaning, it is just a means. This process requires a thorough knowledge about audio signals both in time domain and frequency domain. Any spectrum analyser with a handy filter just suffice.

By the way, I have an MS degree in electronic engineering, and therefore have a sufficient background. There is no algorithm to do this job. Each song has its own noise characteristics, i.e., if you clean a song using some algorithm, it will not necessarily do for the next song! (as softwares offer)

Here is the next cleaned song I want to share.

Duniya Ki Nazar Hai Bhuri - Agra Road (1957) , By Mohammad Rafi & Geeta Dutt

PLEASE NOTE:

I'm very sorry that I had uploaded here the "intermediate version" of this song inadvertently! ... I apologize those people who had downloaded it already.

Now I deleted the wrong version here and uploaded the final version to Geeta Dutt forum under the thread "Cleaned Geeta Songs"

Kistin brother, you are right. You did mention the name of the software programs. My mistake that I missed.

And you are right about knowing the technical details for best results. It's just that I have so many songs that need to be fixed. I prefer keeping atleast Rafi sahab's songs in good quality. I use Creative WaveStudio myself for editing tracks. I use it to remove skips or cuts and normalize the sound volume basically. But it still provides only the basic options. With the software programs you mentioned and the one Teddy bhai mentioned, I think I can do better. Not better than you or Teddy bhai ofcourse :) But atleast there will be some improvement in the quality. Plus, I can convert more songs from cassettes now that I can remove some amount of noise.

And it's true what you said about endurance. I have to listen to the song over and over again, and it still is challenging for a young guy like me :)

Hello ANT brother. This song is recorded as extremely saturated! You know that it is impossible to recover an unknown data. This is something like to obtain a pure sinusoidal wave from a square wave which includes almost all harmonics.

Indeed I obtained a better version and uploaded here, but later I decided to remove and did so, because I cannot call it as cleaned !!!

Sorry, if I caused any inconvenience.

Anyway, this song is not so old (1976) and I hope that you can find an unsaturated record of it.

ANT bhai,

A long time ago you had uploaded "Aisa To Kabhi Mumkin" from 'Gunah Aur Kanoon'. The quality was pretty alright but I think if Kistin could clean it, maybe it could be better. I used to have your version but I seemed to have lost it, so if possible, can you please upload it again smile1.gif

Thanks

ANT brother and PrinceAli brother,

Although there was some echo (it makes very difficult to clean) and missing frequencies (not all can be recovered) in the song, I tried to clean and recover.

Please criticize (i.e., tell me the errors you detect), as without feedback I cannot develop my work.

I hope all brothers/sisters in this forum like the cleaned song.

Thanks ANT ji for uploading the song and Thanks Kistin ji for cleaning it.

Kistin ji, you did a good job, but there is this slight tweak when the song plays, even when you put it on a CD. Would you be able to take that little sound out ?.

PrinceAli Brother, thanks for your determination and hence your help.

I offer you two new processed versions of the song below, hoping that at least one of them is suitable for you. Please tell me which one is better, so that I would delete the other in order to save the valuable space of the server.

Please note that in order to cope with the existence of troublesome echo, this time I introduced very litle noise on purpose, so do not get surprised!

By the way, can you please tell me the meanings of "JI" , "JEE" and "BHAI" ?

ANT bhai,

Thanks for being my teacher. From now on, I'll try to use them.

I have to say that "DOST" means "faithful friend" in Turkish and used widely. In fact, as far as I observed, some of the words have the same meaning in Turkish! I think that Turkey and India are both influenced from Arabic and Persian culture in the past.
"Brother" in Turkish means "KARDESH" This is similar to Indian word "GARDISH" (I hear in some songs) are they equivalent?
Anyway bhai, thank you... You are a nice dost smile1.gif

Kistin, I am a new member and even though I have not been able to download any of the cleaned songs yet, but I too have attempted to digitize and clean songs on my PC and the results have been quite good.. I mainly add Echo and Reverb to the songs and ofcourse do a bit of noise reduction, all of this through the Nero Wave Editor and recently through Sound Forge. I would love to know, what all processes you are using to clean the songs.

I can't wait to download your songs, but when I try, there is an error that says only participating members can d/l. Hopefully, this message would also make me a participating member.

Hello LEGENDRAFI,
I do not add any effects to old songs, in order to keep their originality. Instead, I clean only, as I have explained in some messages back.
As for your membership, in order to download some songs, you must be advanced to be a "trusted member".
Please read the forum's regulations for more information. Good luck!

Nothing important, but was just wondering why bother cleaning up tracks like "Jo Wada Kiya" (TAJ MAHAL) or "Tu Kahaan Yeh Bataa" (TERE GHAR KE SAAMNE), since these are easily available on CD. Don't mind me, I was just thinking aloud. Sure, there would be rare old recordings that need cleaning, and some of our members help us with them as you do.

Please carry on! Sorry for the interruption!

Hello Kistin,
I have been following the threads you've started on ' cleaned songs '. First of all, good luck with your project and we all will help you with supplying the songs when the time & opportunity permit.
However, having spent 15 odd years as a recording engineer I just have to comment on your project and the kind of music you are handling. There is nothing wrong in ' cleaning ' up the songs the way you want. But in my view, when you try to enhance the sound, the songs should sound better than the original if at all. However, for one, Its practically impossible to remove the distortion that is inherent in the original master tapes ( or the very first recording they made ) of 95% of the old music from India without hurting the actual music quality itself. Two, most of the old recordings are done with a primitive equipment ( again, no offense to anybody but that's a fact ) so the songs cannot sound any better than what they were. Plus, with the kind of rudimentary software you are using, any discernible ear can tell that the process only compromised the original sound quality to a greater degree. Consider this as a constructive criticism, but I honestly do not think those songs you put out on HF sound any better than the original and they certainly do not sound ' cleaned '. All I can hear are the same distortion with a whole lot of ' envelop ' around it making it sound flat, as if the musicians are singing from a closet. My humble suggestion to you, dearest friend, is that instead of spending hours on ' cleaning ' the songs by merely applying the software tools, you should listen to the music first using a pair of headphones,
compare the channel balance and distribute the better sound of the two, to the other one. You'll be surprised how much better a sound you can achieve by merely selecting a better channel of the two in an original mono recording and applying it for both left and right channels. Trust me, I have been there before and some of the songs are better off left the way they are, because they are only going to sound worse if you mess with them.
Of course, if its a transfer from LP record, you should be able to pick most of the
pops and clips out of the sound spectrum using software like Cool Edit or Adobe Audition. Once again, I used the term, ' most ' because its impossible to take all those anomalies out even from an LP transfer. Ask any audio engineer and I bet he'll agree. But, why mess with an LP sound when it actually makes you feel warm and fuzzy?
Yours sincerely,
Sham

Posted by: LEGENDRAFI Aug 24 2005, 11:33 PM

TeddyBear Ji, I do agree with your point. I have also tried to clean some songs (of course I am not an engineer and use basic softwares lke Sound Forge) but almost every time that I try to reduce the background noise from a recording, the song looses some of it's originality and the sound almost seems as if it is coming from a source that is refraining it from coming out properly. So, the vocals and the music sounds subdued and rather flat. As a result I no longer use the Noise Reduction effect except at a very low scale. Otherwise, I think that adding Echo and Reverb are much better in terms of giving a song some freshness and making the sound richer.

I hope my comments above make some sense. I am almost a layman in terms of the science and technology involved in Sound Editing or Processing.

Legendrafi Bhai,
You are right about echo and reverb, but in that case the output becomes like a "rearrangement" rather than being original. A few years ago I applied them, but didn't like the results. Therefore, now I usually keep away from doing that.

Sham bhai,
I've seen a number of your posts (Kistin bhai) on cleaning songs so I was wondering if you could help me or offer some advice. I have attached a song from a Pakistani film from the 60's that I need to clean and adjust. The song is from the record but it is a bit slow and the pitch is not correct.
I've attached a portion that appeared in the film (unfortunately this is all that is in the film as the original film negative is damaged beyond repair). Using the sample as the standard, can the track be adjusted to sound like that? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Dear Jamal,
Thank you for your kind e-mail and of course the song you wanted me to remaster. By the way, that was a great song. I am uploading the pitch-corrected versions of the song here. As you can hear, its impossible to restore the pitch of a transfer from an LP record. The only way you can attain a reasonable degree of success is by correcting the pitch of the music from the orignal master tape itself. And to be able to do that you will need the original master tape ( which is under the control of the Pakistani establishment ) as well as the original machine that was actually recorded on. That's how professional restoration is done inorder to maintain the integrity of the sound. Having said that I have tried my best to correct the pitch using a professional mixing console and using the sample you sent me as a guide but to be honest with you, I am not happy with the result. I have not treated the song with any software tools because as usual it only corrupts the original sound. Being a purist, to me, that's a big 'no-no'. I rather listen to the original sound with all the hissy glory than an artificial 'cleaned' aura around it which in actuality is unfair to the craftmanship of those musicians who created it. Please give me your thoughts.
Yours sincerely,
Sham

Thanks a lot Sham Bhai and Kistin Bhai, you have done wonders with this song. Thanks for the speedy response too.

Some background on this:

The song is from the Pakistani film Zinda Laash (1967) - the song was only partially available in the film as the original negative was damaged. The LP recording was slower and the pitch was not correct and didn't have the same sweetness as the film version. I sent the small portion that was in the film and the LP version to Kistin Bhai and Sham Bhai and in my opinion they have both brought the song back to its original sound.

I can't thank them enough as this is one of my most favourite songs.

Film: Zinda Laash (1967)
Singer: Irene Parveen
Music: Tassaduq Hussain
Lyrics: Mushir Kazmi

Thanks again.
Jamal

Hello Kistin:

Thank you very much for sharing the cleaned versions of the song. I have a request please. The following song "Kya Haseenon Ka Dil Nahin Hota" from College Girl is one of my favourites but I can not find a better quality. Can this song be cleaned? Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Happy New Year to you.

Hello all,

I always feel myself in debt to this forum, as I have downloaded many nice songs here.

In a way, I try to pay for it by cleaning - with respect to me - some songs.

While cleaning the following song, I have performed some pitch adjustment . Please help me by telling if the pitch is correct. I am not sure if the sound of Rafi that has been adjusted is normal for a 1948 song.

Thanks in anticipation...

Regards

Sab Kuch Lutaya Hamne - Mohammad Rafi - Chunariya (1948)

Thank you for your kind response Mohd Bhai.

Yesterday I have reworked on the following song and after many hours of work, achieved a version which is near CD quality without echo!

Chala Chal Musafir - Mohammad Rafi, ... & Chorus - Maa Ke Ansoo (1959)

In addition to previous work, I have repaired 3 more skips. Also, corrected the pitch so that Rafi's sound has now become very good!

I would like this song to be a humble gift from my side to everyone in this nice forum...

Hello all,

While examining my song archive, I have noticed that this song is really a nice one!

Kaise Kategi Zindagi - Mohammad Rafi - Album or Film? (year?)

I don't remember where and when I had downloaded it, and couldn't find any information in EarthMusic Network. Therefore, I don't know from which film it is. Please tell me if anyone knows it.

It would be my happiness if you like its quality... gift.gif

Thanks Kistin bhai.
As far as I remember this is an unreleased song of Rafi sahab. Probably Sajjad bhai had uploaded it in HF itself sometime back.

Posted by: LEGENDRAFI Feb 20 2006, 09:40 AM

Kistin ji, this is a lovely song from an 'unreleased' film. There was a time when this song was not available easily but in the last few years I have seen this song feature in quite a few collections and compilations. I do know one thing that the music in this song is by the Late Madan Mohan. As far as the year of release is concerned, I think someone else might be able to help.

Posted by: kistin Feb 20 2006, 07:34 PM

Fiftysomeone Bhai and LEGENDRAFI Bhai, thank you both very much for the info about this song.

I understand that this song was not released. Does anyone know the story of it? I mean, what is the year of production and why it had not been released?

I also wonder if there are more than one composers named "Madan Mohan" in the Indian music literature, because LegendRafi Bhai pointed out as "Late Madan Mohan"

Thanks in anticipation,
Kistin

Ali bhai,

For your next request, I have worked in a different way.

First obtained a crisp version (P11) and after examining the video of the song (I had downloaded from HF sometime back), decided to make another version as close to the mystery of the song as possible (P10V).

Tu Kahan Yeh Bata (full) - Mohammad Rafi - Tere Ghar Ke Samne (1963) - [Sachin Dev Burman]

Here are both versions. I could not decide myself which one to keep, so please help me about this. This is very important for the peace of my mind (my huzur!), as this song is among the ones that I like most!

P.S. Both are at CD quality.

I was curious about listening to Rafi's sound not in a song, but in normal speaking. Therefore I had downloaded following interview from this forum some time back. Thanks (Jay or another friend)...

I was really surprised that Rafi's sound is fairly different than that I used to hear in the songs. There is a very short song passage in the interview, so that I believed that he is Rafi! When he starts to sing, an unbelievable magic occurs. His sound is a gift from Allah...

As I don't understand the language of interview, except the two words "music sector" told by Rafi, I would delete this file from my computer. But before deleting, decided to clean it and share here.

Here it is

Mohammad Rafi Interview (year?)

P.S. The sounds in the background are not noise. As far as I realized, this interview was in a building with open windows (probably summer time) near a street, therefore we hear cars and even sounds of some children playing outside.

Kistin

Kistin ji, you are really doing a great job here and your passion towards Rafi Sahab and old hindi music is certainly commendable.

Well, I have a song which has got quite a bit of noise in the background and plus some issues with the the voulme levels as well. I felt that you might be able to help me out in cleaning this song.
The song is from the film AKASHDEEP - Mujhe Dard E Dil Ka Pata Na Tha. It is the full version of the song which I extracted from the DVD soundtrack. Now, I also have the song which is found on the CDs and therefore I have mixed the two tracks and made it into one. The part from the CD is OK but the DVD one has major noise problems. So, I am U/Ling the song here. Please check it and see whether you can repair it.

Looking forward to to your response.

Tauba Yeh Nazaare - Mohammad Rafi - Dillagi (1966) - [Laxmikant & Pyarelal]

It is really a nice song! Surely will add to my Gift CD series.

P.S. The song you have sent to me had been processed previously with extra noise, fluctuating stereo effect and echo effect! I have removed the noise as well as stereo effect (it was not so easy!) and tried to minimize the echo.

In order to finish the work, I have slept only 3 hours last night!

According to me, it is at CD quality now!

Mujhe Dard E Dil Ka Pata Na Tha (full - REARRANGE) - Mohammad Rafi - Akashdeep

The problem was in the time interval between 2:13 and 3:11. I think that you have inserted this part from DVD. For this interval, I have removed the noise and tried to match the sound timbre to the rest of the song. This was very hard, because the rest of the song and this part had different effects applied previously! Also repaired the whole song at 4 points.

Mohd Bhai, here is your request.

Pyar Karna Hi Padega - Mohammad Rafi - Sharbati Aankhen (1945) - [Music: Feroz Nizami - Lyrics: Indra Chandra]

This is the output of approximately 10 hours work!

Changed the pitch, because I believe that I have catched Rafi's magical sound. Please tell me your opinion.

Akbar Ali Bhai,
I have cleaned the song in question two times. Second was in an acceptable level, but NEVER in CDQ ! Because it's effective BW was not sufficient and was hurt too.

For the time being, I even do not have any version of it. If we can have an unhurt original with sufficient bandwidth, then we could obtain CDQ.

A Jane Ja Chali Kaha - Asha Bhosle & Mohammad Rafi - Gustakhi Maaf (1969)

What is done:

1. Removed noise
2. Adjusted the pitch slightly
3. Optimized frequency spectrum
4. Repaired 3 annoying big skips in the first half of the song (this was the hardest operation).

What is not done:

1. There are still 3 or 4 skips in the second half of the song

If I can remove the remaining skips in the future, then will reupload. Could not do right now, I am sorry.

Aye Mere Man - Mohammad Rafi - Us Paar (1974)

Music: Sachin Dev Burman

Duration : 5 min:53 sec

Encoding: CBR 160 kbps

Processed on request of Prince Ali, but since this is a crisp version, I would like to share with all HF members.

On request of Prince Ali,

Saathi Re Gham Nahin Karna - Mohammad Rafi - Ikraar (1979)

Music: Bappi Lahiri
Duration: 6 min : 11 sec
Encoding: mp3, 160 kbps, cbr

Corrected all errors that I could notice (including the timing error at approx 1:40). Now it seems to me as error-free and very crisp.

Also adjusted the spectrum in order to get Rafi's magical sound as well as to remove the sound pressure.

Hopefully I believe that you all will like this version and will be happy if I have contributed a little to this valuable forum.

Thank you kistin.. the film name reminds me of a song by Rafi Sahab and another male singer sitting in a rocket, it goes something like..

"Ho ke rocket pe sawaar aaya aaj tera dildar
O dharti kare gagan se pyar wah wah yaar"

"Woh din gaye abb meri jaab th'e jab Oont pe majoon khan
Dholi mein thee Laila jaan badlee aashiq kee ab shaan
O Kanta kare phool se pyar, wah wah yaar..."

It is from a B&W movie and sounds from early sixties...

Any ideas any one..?

While you wait for kistin to do his magic.
You can see if you like this cleanup.
I am doing this to see if there is comparable difference between kistin's software or not.

Myth bhai,

I have evaluated a version which is fairly better, but not so good. Because, with my knowledge, the noise is dynamic and cannot be removed with ordinary techniques.

On the other hand, due to my respect to the original uploader cm2 ji, I would like to hear cm2 ji's ijazat, in order to upload my version.

Kistin

Thanks for kind words, but I do not have any magic, only trying humbly to be of help here and also developing my own song archive.

Indeed, thank you for uploading your edited version in this thread, and you are always welcome.
Because of ratio limitation I couldn't download your version, but guess that it is very good.

Thanks again,

What I liked in this song is that Rafi is laughing while singing at ease !

r&d ji, thanks for the date information for "Maine Socha Tha".

As for "Itni Badi Duniya Jahan", I think that there is a misunderstanding. In my culture, laughing is not necessarily only for joy or funny things, but in case of "sitam" or "dard" too. Sorry for my poor English vocabulary and for any inconvenience caused.

Hi Everyone,
I am new to this forum and I mesmerised to see this amazing collection here.
I used to think that I am the biggest fan of Md.Rafi but what a fool I was.
But friends even I have been blessed by a heart which can appriciate and love Rafi and Rafi songs.
This is a Gift of God for Me.
I just want to thank all of you for these songs.
I have a few request. Could you please search for these songs and upload if possible.

1.Tu shokh kali main mast pawan(I am looking for the Duet, I have the solo)
2.Aankhen hamrai ho sapne tumhaare ho.
3.Mere mehboob mere saath hin chalna hai tujhe.
4.Dil ki lagi ne humko deewaana bana ke chhoda.

I dont have much details about these songs as I used to listen to them through radio when I was quite young.

This is earnest request to all the rafi fans to find these songs and upload them for the welfare of all of us.

Regards,
Nikhil

Prince Ali has requested to combine the two parts of the following song, hence attempting to obtain the full version. The first part was dull, whereas the second part was crisp. I have first made the first part sound like the second, and then combined them with the tempo match in mind.

So we would like to share the output of this humble work in this respected forum. Hope you all like.

Flex Bhai, that thread is really a documentary gem. Thank you so much for sharing all those valuable documents.

I have checked the post number 32, and realized that the film could not come to an end due to tragic death of K. Asif in March 1971. This explains the true date of this song.

Thanks again

Long time ago, I had uploaded the fim version of "Hum Aap Ki Mehfil Mein" on Prince Ali's request.

Bhule Chuke Male To - Mohammad Rafi - Film/Album ? (Year ?)

Music: ?

Lyrics: Badri Kachwala (Found on the net)

Genre: Gujarati

Duration: 3 min & 8 sec

Format: mp3, 160 kbps, cbr.

Is this song rare? No information at Earth Music.

I do not remember from where I had downloaded. Anyway, thanks to the original uploader ji.

It was extremely noisy, but after a long work, I have managed to extract the wonderful sound of Rafi.

Language is not Hindi. On the net it is mentioned as being a Gujarati song. Is Gujarati a spoken language in India?

Nevertheless, Rafi is Rafi and is independent of the spoken languages, as he sings in the universal music language. At the beginning of the song, he sings so soft. The style of the song looks like a qawwali, but I'm not sure for this. Please check.

Hope that you all like my work...

Mujhe Dard-e Dil Ka Pata Na Tha (full - inserted) - Mohammad Rafi - Akash Deep (1965)

Music: Chitragupt
Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri
Duration: 4 min & 15 sec
Format: mp3, 160kbps, cbr.

This version had been prepared with the cooperation of LEGENDRAFI bhai (nowadays I don't see him in HF). The aim was to obtain a full version.

Now that I have removed 5 more skips, and managed to obtain somewhat a better match of the CD version and the noisy (cleaned) part which was inserted into, would like to share here.

Regards

A fairly good version of "Aankh Jhuki Si Chal Rukhi Si" from film "Burma Road (1962)" is ready.

If anyone interested, I can share with pleasure.
