Inaam Do accept my congratulations for starting this beautiful thread. I too am one of those, who are completely mesmerised by Diya Jalakar Aap Bujhaya and consider this one to be among the few very very best of Noorjenhan's songs. I know it would be a herculean effort but perhaps one way to extend this thread and effort could be list all the songs in a particular year and then invite a discussion on the nomination for five best of the year, followed by the choice of best of the year, a la Oscar style. Believe me even then, it would be difficult to nominate 5 and then to finally select one, from 1944 onwards in particular. She was such a magnificient singer. Pradeep Pradeep! I think it’s a wonderful idea and when I was starting the thread I wanted to do this, but there is only one problem, I do not have the complete record of her songs. I have been compiled the complete list of her songs from 1939 to 1959. From 1960 to 19969, I have the record of 70% songs and from 1970 to 1999, I have the record of only 50% songs. Lets wait for the comments of other members, If they agree with your idea, I will do that. Inaam Dear Inaam A friend from Mumbai has requested me to send a completete filmography of Noorjehan's Pakistani movies, as an actress - singer and then as a playback singer. I happen to go through this thread today and noted the above exchange of emails. It is a pity that our professional life leaves little time to pursue our passion and my desire to partcipate in a contest to select best of Noorjehan year-wise remained unfulfilled. The above exchange also brought back memories of Priya, who was so passionate about Noorjehan songs. In recent times a number of friends have joined HF who seem to be passionate about the music of 1940s and 1950s. Perhaps some of us could get together to revive this thread. Meanwhile I wonder, if you can provide me a year-wise filmography of Noorjehan's Pakistani movies as an actress - singer and as a playback singer. Am I right in assuming that Ghunghat (1962) was her last movie as a leading lady (or was it Chingari in 1964) and thereafter she pursued her career as playback singer? Please enlighten me. Thanks Pradeep |

A great thread... Do let me know if you need any of her songs. Would be glad to share them Joy, sorrow, tears, lamentation, laughter — to all these music gives voice, but in such a way that we are transported from the world of unrest to a world of peace, and see reality in a new way, as if we were sitting by a mountain lake and contemplating hills and woods and clouds in the tranquil and fathomless water. - Albert Schweitzer Without music life would be a mistake - Friedrich Nietzsche Where words fail, music speaks - Hans Christian Anderson Music is spiritual. The music business is not - Van Morrison |

Although she did make a guest appearance (along with other Pakistani stars of that era including Sabiha, Tarana etc) on the request of the film director/producer S. Suleman in Baji (1963). That song is available on youtube and you can see Noor Jehan sitting in a wedding scene and enjoying her own song (a duet by her and Farida Khanum) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yckEFO_bL5c |
