AAP AUR HUM HF
SANGEET KA SAFAR HAVE TODAY TV LIFE FOR BOLLWOOD MEMBERS.

Naya tadka, puraani daal

May 05, 2007
Indian Idol 3
Channel: Sony TV
Judges: Anu Malik, Alisha Chinai, Javed Akhtar, Udit Narayan

A team of the most successful names in the film music industry is looking for a voice "Jo boondein barsa de, jo diye jala de, jo sur saja de…"

Pretty high hopes, speaking purely from the past two Indian Idol experiences that have, at best, created mere 60 watt singing starlets! So what's different this time?

For starters, the configuration of judges has changed. The sense and sensitivity of Sonu Nigam has been replaced by Udit Narayan's comments on the craft of singing, Farah Khan's frank fundas on perfomance have been taken over by singer Alisha Chinai while Javed Akhtar has jumped from Fame Gurukul to Indian Idol with his punches on pronunciation and poetry intact. Of course, the only "entertainer-cum-rollover judge" is Anu Malik, and with him around the antics abound.

With a new quartet sitting in judgement, the dynamics between the four lends a fresh energy to the show. The "really" feisty arguments between Anu Malik and Javed Akhtar over who to take to Mumbai and who to leave behind, the soft-spoken charms of Alisha Chinai and the ever-smiling jibes of Udit Narayan all add a new tadka to the puraani daal.

Speaking of naya tadka, Hussein Kuwajerwala has replaced Aman Verma as the host and it seems that a weight has been lifted off the general air of the show. Hussein brings with him a genuine connection with the contestants and a youthfulness that seems to have rubbed off on co-anchor Mini Mathur. As affable as the last two times, Mini seems better styled and more svelte this time round.

The general format of the show by virtue of it being a talent hunt remains the same. But as we all know that talent or no talent, the hunt for entertainment is always on in the television industry. To that end, an array of contestants comprising the embarrassingly bad to the simply mad were on show rather than the real singers. Perhaps they will be revealed directly in Mumbai, for now the viewers were amusingly entertained with wannabe rock stars, Salman Khan and Himesh Reshammiya lookalikes, to tricoloured faces, to jhatkas, matkas and even a set of twins that "fooled" the judges…

While the drama within the closed doors of the judges room is high voltage, the ambience out of doors is pleasantly understated. The look of the different regions and cities from Delhi to Srinagar is natural and culturally vibrant, the emotional connect of the anchors with the contestants is unforced and the vibe is friendly…This then is the distinct difference between the third and the earlier editions of the Indian Idol hunt. It's more believable this time!

VERY GOOD LIFE LOVE AND MUSIC
