The Pole Star once was Thuban (3000 B.C.), the third star from the end of the tail in Draco.

In a little more than 5,000 years from now, Alderamin, the brightest star in the constellation Cepheus, will be almost the Pole Star.

About 7,000 years from now, Deneb, the brightest star in Cygnus, will be the pretender for the Pole Star for a while.

In about 12,000 years from now, Vega, the brightest star in Lyra, will be the Pole Star. Vega will be a brilliant Pole Star some six times brighter than Polaris.

There are long periods when there is no Pole Star at all.

At the present time there is no Pole Star in the southern sky.

As per Vedic-Astronomy->

-Planets along with respective satelite/s Revolve around Sun
-Sun along with all its planets Revolves around Polar Star
-Polar Star along with Solar Families (there are many solar systems like ours) Revolves around Abhijit Star
-Abhijit Star Along with Polar stars(there can be many polar star) Revolves around ????

Ancient Seers Analysis goes upto Abhijit Star.
After eons, when Hanuman comes out of 'Samaadhi' on Gandhmaadan Mountain, He looks towards sky & after seeing the position of Polar Star & Saptrishi Mandal, He calculated the total period from Ram's Departure Day to till day & says 'Treta Yug has passed & now this Dwaapar Yug is also near end'.

Based on these facts, position of Polar star changes due to revolvement of solar system & in place of North Polar Star some other brighten star appears, HENCE theory described by our wise magician seems true. smile.gif

LOL..USR, '...Hence the theory described by' me? biggrin.gif

A few adjustments to what you quote:

Abhijit is the Indian name of the star I mentioned - Vega. Polaris doesn't travel around it. As of today it is vice versa. Yes, in 7000 years' time it will appear to be the other way round.

Abhijit has an interesting history. Even in the puranas, it is mentioned that Abhijit 'fell in the sky'. It is the only star recorded that has actually changed its place over a short period.

Stars do change places, but the distances between us and them are so huge that we cannot notice the change.

Like, Ursa Major, or saptarshi, are shaped like a question mark. Over the next few thousand years, the loop of the 'question mark' will open up.

Mandrake the galaxies are also in movement right? So now depending on the distance of the orbit it travels, I guess there is a change in position of almost all stars. So the stars that pose as Pole star will keep changing over a period of time. Have I got my facts right? mellow.gif

The earth is tilted at 23.5 degrees, so the axis points at Polaris today. Over 26000 years, the tip of the axis draws an imaginary circle in the sky, much like the tip of a rotating top that is about to stop spinning.
During this, whichever star comes on the circumference line of this circle, gets the label of 'Pole Star'.
In the entire circle, there are only 3 stars that actually lie ON the circle, and hence are clearly pole stars. Others are only close, so they will not qualify.
Hence, Vega (Abhijit) (in Lyra constellation), Thuban (in Draco constellation) and today's pole star are the only true contenders. If you look carefully, today's pole star is such an ordinary star (no big size, no extra brightness) that it clearly satisfies the line '...some have greatness thrust on them'.

For OUR lifetimes, it IS a constant. Won't change its place in our lifetimes for sure biggrin.gif

Wonder how many fallacies...pls list them - let us verify wink2.gif

also it's the brightest star in the constellation Lyra and the 5th brightest star in the sky.
after sirius and arcturus, it's the 3rd brightest in the northern sky. distance is around 23.5
light years from earth.

here's the picture of vega taken by spitzer space telescope, just for you though u have it. smile.gif

about pole star: a star that lies in the direction shown by one of the earth's poles. if it's the north pole
then north star and if it's south pole then south star. it's an indicator for celestial navigation cause
it doesn't change its position frequently like all other stars.

here's a view: how daily rotation of earth creates appearance of the rings around the north pole.

Attached Image

here's the quiz:
what are the poles stars in the north and south directions ? when will the reach the maximum declination ? smile.gif

I will shortly upload a sketch showing the 'circle' of the pole through the constellations. Am working on it. Should be done in an hour.
