Though not exactly complying with the title of this thread - I felt that this pair of twins are worthy of mention - for general interest
These two tunes from the film Gazal (1964) by Madan Mohan - are essentially from the same basic idea - and their lyrics are similar too (in fact, their last antaras have identical lyrics) but Madan Mohan has brought in so many variations into them ( and the Rafi one is a little faster also) that they are certainly not 'identical' and are actually two different songs. Perhaps they were two very closely related 'versions' of the tune for a song - and he may have liked both so much that he decided to use both rather than making a choice between them. The songs are : Naghma_o_sher ki saugaat kise pesh karoon, Lata, Gazal 1964, Madan Mohan_Sahir Ishq ki garmiye jazbaat kise pesh karoon, Rafi, Gazal 1964, Madan Mohan_Sahir Sri P.S. Sahir must have been in love with the 'kise pesh karoon' phrase - it was used in as many as 3 songs in the same film !! The third one (other than the two mentioned above, being 'Rang aur noor ki baaraat kise pesh karoon' ) "Jis din is duniya se nafrat aur khudgarzi mit jaayegi, us roz yeh insaan naachega, us roz yeh dharti gaayegi" - Rajinder Krishan (Maa baap 1959)

Sincere thanks, Sri, for sharing those strong 'Ghazal' resemblances.
PA Ji and Sri, Continuing on this identical pair brought out by PA, when I d/led from here and listened to the Kaise Kahoon song(Rafi & Asha) first, I found that I knew it quite well. But, subsequently, when I d/led and listened to the Dr.Vidya song (Rafi & Lata), I could not recall having heard it at all earlier. So, it is possible that the earlier Dr. Vidya (1962) song somehow did not become very popular or become 'a hit'. So, it could be that SDB had thought that this tune, very nice one that it is, deserves one more attempt at popularisation! And he repeated it in 1964 (two years later) in Kaise Kahoon! One more thing. See the similarity of this S.D.Burman pair with the other Iqbal Quereshi pair! In both pairs, the earlier song belongs to 1962 and the later one belongs to 1964. And in both pairs, the earlier song is by Rafi-Lata and the later one by Rafi-Asha. What is more, in both pairs the later song is more popular than the earlier song! Come to think of it, even in the N.Datta pair, the later song (Tu Hind Bane Ya) is more popular than the earlier song(Kya Kya Na Sitam). Venkat I have changed many views in life since my childhood, but not my view of Rafi Saab as the God-sent Gandharva who visited this Earth briefly to spread ultimate ecstasy among genuine music-lovers!

1964 was the period when SDBurman was laid up...he stopped taking up new films and and had difficulty in completing his films on hand. Sri Sri ji & Venkat ji, Can you please confirm this. I believe SDB had a heart attack around 1963 and lost three or four films including "Gumnaam" and "Love In Tokyo" which eventually went to SJ (and what great music they produced), as well as "Baharein Phir Bhi Aayenge" (great music by OPN). Dev stayed with him for Guide and the result was arguably his best album ever. Prince Ali |

Venkat Venkatji there are many such incidents where the MDs have used their earlier tunes and the later ones were much more popular than the earlier songs. For example Roshan used the tune of the song...mera dil kahaan hai..asha..chandni chowk again in rahein na rahein hum...mamta...lata. madan mohan used....aankhon aankhon main ho gaye mast ishaare...khajanchi..asha again in....nainon waali ne hai mera dil luta...lata...mera saya. SDB used same tunes with slight variations in many songs 1. saari khushiaan saath aayin aap jab aaye...shamshad in jeevan jyoti (53) reused in tum re sang to rain bitaayi...sagina...kishor and lata 2. tasveerein banati hain....asha in jeevan jyoti re-used in dil pukare aa re aa re...jewel thief Sri Bhai paish karoon..... remember the mushaaira in the movie gazal..... khatte angoor ke baagaat kise paish karoon apni mummy se jaake poochh apna haath kisey paish karoon When you find peace within yourself, you become the kind of person who can live at peace with others

So, that's good! This thread has a lot more work to do! I would love to pursue, at leisure, the leads given by Mahesh Ji, im4afi Ji, Anupama ji, Mohanflora Ji (in the next post!) and others.
Thanks to all you, musically-minded people. Venkat I have changed many views in life since my childhood, but not my view of Rafi Saab as the God-sent Gandharva who visited this Earth briefly to spread ultimate ecstasy among genuine music-lovers!
