Shaan disappoints fans at South Africa show

Indian singer Shaan left hundreds of fans disappointed when he failed to appear at a live stage show at which he was billed as the main star.

The promoters of the show said through the national radio station Lotus FM that Shaan had been forced to leave on Friday due to work commitments.

The singer, who thrilled audiences at the Suncoast Casino in Durban on Thursday, reportedly also announced during that show that he would be leaving Friday as he had work commitments in India.

Fans who had already bought tickets for the show at Caesars Gauteng here were offered refunds by the promoters but most opted to remain to be entertained by singers Ayub Patel, Sonali Salkar and Shreya Ghosal and comedian Shakil Ansari.

They were not disappointed as these artists, suddenly having to perform longer than had been planned, more than made up for Shaan's absence.

Ghosal, named the best playback singer at the IIFA Awards in Singapore last month for her song "Jaadu Hai Nasha Hai" from the film "Jism", proved to be very popular as she belted out her favourites from such films as "Devdas", "Munnabhai MBBS", "Khakee" and the forthcoming "Garv".

But the loudest applause was reserved for Patel as the audience showed their appreciation for the golden oldies of the legendary Mohammed Rafi that are his forte. Patel has also found great favour with local audiences during previous visits here.

Besides a number of solos, Patel's duets with Salkar, singing songs that Rafi had done with Lata Mangeshkar, were lapped up by the audience.

Doing some more recent songs though found Salkar battling a bit as she screeched out some of the higher notes.

Shaan is the second Indian singer to find himself in controversial circumstances in South Africa in recent weeks.

A fortnight ago Sonu Nigam found himself at the centre of a high court wrangle between rival promoters over a tour of three South African cities.

Nigam performed to capacity audiences in Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town after the matter was thrown out of court.
