These are poetry written by Sukanta Bhattacharya. He is the real life example of Vijay of the film, PYAASA! He died of complications arising primarily from starvation. My father grew up in the same area of Calcutta (Kalighat) where Kishore Kavi Sukanta lived. The times were that of 'Partition'. In a flat with 3 small rooms, 30 people had to be accomodated. My paternal grandmother's side of the family were zamindars from the Dacca district of Bangladesh (village Khalia, where my dad lived till the age of 11). After partition they had to leave with practically nothing and come to Calcutta, where my grandfather had already moved with a job in the Calcutta port, fearing one day this might happen (as did many Bengali families from Bangladesh, like that of Geeta Dutt's too!)
Sukanta Bhattacharya wrote mainly about poverty, societal oppression of the wealthy and other issues of social concern. It was after his death, many years later he was given the recognition in Bengal. We studied his poetry in almost all Bengali literature classes. Here are three of his lyrics, which was converted to these tunes by the then communist minded Salil Chowdhury.... ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This song expresses the insult, pains of being born in India that is under the oppression of the British....There is need for a REVOLUTION!! |

Dear Mr. Chatterjee,
You have, by your upload of this one dozen odd songs, showcased perhaps the the finest music-lyrics-rendering combinations of all time in popular Indian music. Since I have not heard much beyond hindi & bengali music, I cannot call it THE finest but I'm reasonably sure that these songs are right up there with the best of the breed. I've thought of many combinations like Lata-Madan Mohan, Rafi-OPN, Kishore-Pancham, Manna Dey-Sudhin Dasgupta, Lata-Salil (both bengali & hindi), Lata-Hridaynath (Marathi), Asha-RD, Mukesh-Shankar Jaikishan, but THIS combination of Hemanta-Salil is in a different league. Thanks a lot for these uploads. Though I have them in a cassette format, I still could not resist downloading them to have them in digital format. Regards-Archie. |
