Hi Faraaj ji,
Excellent songs uploaded by you. I could get a song missing in my collection - Yeh Raaten yeh Mausam ye Hasana hasaana. Really a masterpiece of Pankaj Mullick. I am also looking for another excellent private song - Maine Aaj Piyaa Hoton Ka Pyala. The one which I have is of a very poor recording quality Can you please upload this song if you have it with you? Thanks in anticipation. Rajan |

Thank you, Faraaj! What I found particularly interesting is the song 'praan chaahe naina naa chahe'... it is a literal translation of the Tagore song 'praan chaar chokshu naa chaay'. P K Mallick was of course single handedly responsible for popularising Tagore's songs within Bengal, but I didn't know that he had also translated and sung these in Hindi. Thanks so much for this treasure.

Before this event, the actors used to sing their songs. I would like to know the song, singer and the actor on whom it was picturised. As far as I remember, it was a song sung by Sehgal and picturised on some other actor. But I could be wrong here. I request anybody having more info on this, to please share it. Rajan |

Rajan Thanks for the upload Devje... Rajan Saab Glad you liked the uploads. I have about 40 Pankaj Mullick recordings and the audio for nearly all is very good in case you have any other recording you want to replace. The first playback was actually introduced by the 'Father of Indian Music' Rai Chand Bhoral in the 1934-1935 film Dhoop Chaon with K C Dey, Sardar Akhtar, Pahadi Sanyal etc. To echo off Frangipani Jee's point about Pran Chahe, Dhoop Chaon was a remake/hindi version of a Bengali film by the same team of Nitin Bose-RC Bhoral-KC Dey as Dhoop Chaon and the bengali film actually came out first and introduced playback singing. I'd also like to add that the initial need for playback was not having a different actor and singer but because it was difficult to perform a song live in the daytime in public places due to background noise. Pre-playback songs were generally picturised at night when everyone was asleep!!! And even then the sound quality was poor despite the masterful composition and singing. The only song I have from Dhoop Chaon - low bitrate so can't upload but can email - is Teri Gathri Mein Laaga Chor Musafir Jaag Zara. It was sung by and I assume picturised on KC Dey. Faraaj Bhai,
Thanks for the detailed information provided by you. You have explained the concept of playback singing very nicely. This is truly the correct explanation which did not occur to me. I had used this word in the context where the singer is different from the Actor. For example a song sung by Rafi Saheb and picturized on Shammi Kapoor. I would like to know details of first such recording. I had read somewhere many years ago that this was first tried by Pankaj Mullick. Also, the song Pran Chahe has a western style music and tune. I have a feeling that this could be first such usage of Western style music in Hindi/Bangla. Need to do some research on this. I appreciate your offer to share good quality recording of PM songs. I am in the processing of reorganizing my collection of songs which are mostly on tapes. I will definitely communicate with you in this regard. Regards, Rajan |

Also, the song Pran Chahe has a western style music and tune. I have a feeling that this could be first such usage of Western style music in Hindi/Bangla. Need to do some research on this. Rajan Tagore did compose quite a few tunes extensively based on Western melodies, 'praan chaahe' or rather, its Bengali counterpart, 'praan chaay' would be just one example of many (I am not sure what the exact inspiration is). 'praan chahe' has a more distinct Western background score, which is not something that would be seen in (Bengali) Tagore songs in those days, but the melody line of quite a few Tagore songs are based on a wide sampling of western classical or folk tunes. So, I am not so sure that this is the first instance of use of Western-style melody, at least not for Bangla songs. |

Must start looking out for some Ravindra Sangeet. However, I would like to know the words and meaning of the song as well. Thanks, Regards - Rajan |

Regards, Rajan Rajan Bhai When I spoke of playback, I did not mean different singer and actor. But, if we speak of different singer and actor - which is what you had in mind - the first instance is supposed to be Anil Biswas singing Jeevan Hai Ek Kahani in the 1937 film Mahageet, which he also composed the music for. The picturisation was on Hiren Bose. I'll try to find this song from somewhere if no other HF member uploads it in the next few days/weeks.
