Dear Friends

I am immensely pleased to welcome you all to the media meet in connection with the grand finale of the Diamond Jubilee celebration of Films division which is going to be held from 14th March to !6th March 2009.

Since last 60 years, Films Division, the flagship organization as far as documentary movement is concerned has been setting standards in documentary making and its experiments in the fields of short and animation films paved way for the development of these genres of film making.

In another sense, Films made by Films Division play a major role in human resource development in our country by enlightening viewers and introducing them to the core culture and life of people of the country. A film can tell more than a book and you need not be literate to understand it. That’s why a medium like Cinema is all the more relevant in a rural dominant country like ours. The benefits accrued from viewing a documentary are far reaching and futuristic. Knowledge isn’t power unless and until it’s applied. And FD films gave knowledge to the people and instructed the ways to apply them too. And thus played a vital role in nation building.

It’s not only the quantity but also the quality of our films that speaks volumes about our untiring work. Yes, Films Division, which has made more than 8500 films in the last 60 years, has in its kitty over 1500 International, National & State awards and Certificates of Participation, including 2 Academy award nominations! A rare feat by any standards for any public organization.

Apart from making films, FD also conducts the biennial Mumbai International Film Festival (M.I.F.F.) since 1990. The Government of Maharashtra has been the co host for the festival since its inception. M.I.F.F. is another feather in the cap of Films Division. M.I.F.F. has truly revolutionized the short film scenario in the country and is rated as one of the largest and popular documentary film festivals of the world.

Films division constantly updates technology and has digitalized its entire repertoire of films. The recently opened International Digital Film Archive and Research and Reference Centre caters to the needs of film makers, scholars, media students and film lovers.

Films division is also doing a yeoman service to the nation by setting up a Museum of Moving Images at its Mumbai complex, one of its kind in Asia, where the history of Indian cinema’s technical and creative evolution will be displayed in detail.

In order to give a fitting tribute to the gargantuan organization during the Diamond Jubilee year, we had decided to reach out to the nooks and corners of the great country by organizing year long celebration of films and film makers with selected documentary films. . The celebration began in New Delhi in June’2008 with a film festival cum exhibition at the Films Division Auditorium, on June-12, 2008, inaugurated by Shri P.R.Dasmunshi, Hon’ble Minister of I & B. and then it traveled to Indore, Kolkata, Madurai, Bhopal, Lucknow, Goa Thiruvananthapuram, Visakhapatnam, Goa, Madurai, Bengalooru and many more places.

We now plan to hold a grand finale of our Diamond Jubilee at the Films Division Complex in Mumbai during 14th to 16th March.,2009. The function will be inaugurated by Shri Yash Chopra, veteran film maker as Chief Guest and Shri Anand Sharma, Minister of State for I& B will preside over the function followed by felicitation of eminent film makers and industry veterans and premier show of a biopic on “Mohammed Rafi” (directed by Kuldeep Sinha) on 14th March, 2009 at 5:00 p.m. All three days will be filled with fragrant festivities like, special film screenings, poets meet, classical concerts and musical evenings, etc.

To add more meaning to the celebrations, a special screening of films on communal harmony has been organized at 2.30 PM on the 13th of March.2009 at Films Division RRIII theatre. This screening will be inaugurated by noted writer/poet and social activist Shri.Javed Akthar.

Whatever Films division has achieved till date has been whole heartedly supported by the Media, which is phenomenally friendly with us. While recalling the camaraderie with gratitude, I once again call upon one and all of the media to extend the same kind of support to the forth coming Diamond Jubilee celebrations too.

संगीतप्रेमियों के चहेते रफी पर बनी लघु फिल्म Apr 11, 11:06 am

नई दिल्ली। सरकार ने आखिरकार करोड़ों संगीत प्रेमियों के चहेते पा‌र्श्व गायक मोहम्मद रफी के जीवन के अनछुए पहलुओं को उजागर करने वाली 70 मिनट की एक लघु फिल्म बनाकर इस महान गायक के प्रशंसकों की वर्षो पुरानी आस पूरी की है। यह फिल्म शीघ्र ही सिनेमाघरों एवं सीडी और वीसीडी के जरिये लोगों के सामने होगी।

इस फिल्म का निर्माण एवं निर्देशन करने वाले फिल्म्स डिविजन के मुख्य निर्माता कुलदीप सिन्हा ने बताया कि यह फिल्म करीब दो सप्ताह पूर्व ही बनकर तैयार हुई है। पिछले दिनों मुंबई में यह फिल्म सुप्रसिद्ध फिल्म निर्माता-निर्देशक यश चोपड़ा सहित फिल्म जगत की कई हस्तियों को दिखाई गई। अब फिल्म विभिन्न फिल्मोत्सवों में भेजी जा रही है।

दिल्ली में अगले सप्ताह यह फिल्म इंडिया इंटरनेशनल सेंटर, फिल्म्स डिविजन सभागार और प्रेस क्लब आफ इंडिया जैसे कई स्थानों पर दिखायी जाएगी। इस फिल्म को यहां 17 अप्रैल से मैजिक लैटर्न फाउंडेशन की ओर आयोजित हो रहे तीन दिन के फिल्मोत्सव में दिखाए जाने की उम्मीद है।

सिन्हा ने कहा कि मोहम्मद रफी पर फिल्म का निर्माण उनके लिए वर्षो पुराने सपने का साकार होने जैसा है। उन्होंने कहा कि उन्होंने 1980 में मोहम्मद रफी के निधन के समय ही इस महान गायक पर फिल्म बनाने के बारे में सोचा था और इस संबंध में उन्होंने मशहूर संगीतकार नौशाद से बात भी की थी जिन्होंने इस फिल्म के निर्माण के लिये पूरा सहयोग देने का वायदा किया लेकिन कुछ कारणों से यह फिल्म पहले नहीं बन पायी। उन्होंने बताया कि फिल्म में मोहम्मद रफी के जन्म से लेकर मृत्यु तक के विभिन्न पहलुओं, उनके संघर्षो, कामयाबियों, महत्वपूर्ण गीतों तथा उनके बारे में संगीत एवं फिल्म से जुड़ी विभिन्न हस्तियों के विचार आदि को शामिल किया गया है।
