"tum Jio Hazaron Saal" The Controversy Continues... Options

Hi All

I am sure all the Geetaji fans are aware about the controversy regarding the song "Tum Jio Hazaron Saal" from Sujata. Here is one article I found on a newsgroup which states that Geetaji's version was released on a recod. Can any one confirm this ?

Please upload if any one has this song..

May be there were two recordings of this song. I am listing below the
EP / LP numbers and there release dates on
which the versions credited to Geeta Dutt or Asha were released


1 EP / YAE-1493 / Happay Bitrhday to you (Compilation - 3 songs)
Released in 1968
Credited to: Getta Dutt (It is 78 rpm version). Around: 3:06
minutes


2 LP / MOCE 4157 / Geeta Dutt - In Memorium . Released in 1972.
Credit and version as above
Around: 3:06 minute


3 LP / HFLP 3624 (with Bandini). Released in 1991 (SoundTrack
version. X-Check by: Talat / Jalte Hain
Jis Ke Liye has 1 additional pargraph and Nanhi Kali Sone Chali -
has baby's cries)
Credit: Asha + Chorus. Around: 3:07 minutes


The EP of this film was released around 1961 / 62 (TAE 1023) but does
not have this song


Question is, was there two versions of this song, one by Asha + chorus
for the film and


another one by Geeta + Chorus for 78 rpm records ?

had a question about "tum jiyo hazaaro.n saal" . the credits on the
hmv label
say only Asha for this song. And I never thought otherwise when I heard
the
song. Or is it possible that the many "aa, aa" and "o-o " in the songs
are done
by Geeta Dutt, maybe because one singer is singing the main body of the
song and
the "saheliyaan" are laughing and joining in , represented by Geeta's
voice ?
Though i am not sure it is Geeta's voice, I agree it is possible. Well,
maybe
that famous tome of rmim , the geet kosh, needs to be consulted on the
lines of
"geet kosh, geet kosh on the wall, tell me who's the fairest of them
all....."


This also reminds me of another song "bachpan ke din bhii kyaa din the
" and
this time the credits (HMV) say it's a Geeta- Asha duet. However it is
only
nominally so, for Geeta sings all the lines whereas Asha merely steps
in to hum
the "aaa ~aa " during the interlude. So is the "sujaataa" song a
similar case ?

I hear them the same way as you on both. (Incidentally, "bachpan ke
din" is also
from 'Sujata').

The film has four female-singer songs, with lots of humming, aahaa_ing,
and chorus
voices all over! Two are clear solos:


. havaa dheere aanaa (Geeta)


and


. kaali ghaTaa chhaae (Asha)


"bachpan ke din" is credited as Geeta and Asha, but Arunabha is right:
if it is
a duet, it is a very lopsided one, with Asha coming in only for
backgroudn vocals.


"tum jeeyo hazaaron saal" has had a chequered P-statistical history.
For a long
long time, HMV persisted in crediting the singers as "Geeta and
chorus", but what
one heard on the recordings and the film soundtrack was mainly Asha's
voice. I
have an EMI (Pakistan) cassette, of perhaps 1980s vintage, that does
the same.


The first edition of the Geet Kosh for the decade of the 1950s lists
two separate
songs! One by Geeta and chorus (complete with HMV record number) and
another by
Asha and chorus, with no record number (such an entry normally implies
a song
that was recorded, perhaps used in the film, but for which no recording
was
released). The copy of the film I watched had only one instance of the
song,
which is identical to the recording.


A fairly recent HMV cassette I bought (Sujata/Bandini) has rectified
the
egregious error. It attributes "tum jeeyo" to Asha and chorus. (It is
a very
desirable release; "jalte hai.n jis ke lie" has all three stanzas; and
it
includes the forgotten and forgettable Rafi song from the film; I don't
even
remember if the film had it!)


The second edition of Geet Kosh for the 50s follows suit. It lists
only one
instance of the song, and attributes it to Asha and chorus. It also
adds a
footnote about HMV's error in attributitng it to Geeta for many years
on
their recordings. There are no "version" records listed for 'Sujata'.


The story should have ended there, but one end is still loose!

right. In "tum jeeyo", all the words are sung by Asha, as are some of
the
laughters and alaaps, there is quite a bit by chorus voices. In
addition,
there is brief alaap at two interludes by a voice very much like Geeta.
It
stands out because it is a single voice interlaced by chorus voices,
but
unmistakably not Asha. If it is Geeta (very likely), then it is a
highly
lopsided Asha-Geeta duet and SDB has maintained perfect symmetry
between Geeta
and Asha in the songs.


The symmetry perhaps extends to the title music! (Unfortunately, the
cassette
doesn't carry it.) The title music extended portions consisting of
alaap and
humming by Asha. I don't know if I am imagining it, but I think the
final
movement of title music is humming of the "havaa dheere aanaa" tune by
Geeta!


Please give your cassettes/CDs/VCRs a whir and let me know what you
think!

Hmm....I've never been able to hear any Geeta in this song. To me it
has
always sounded like Asha and chorus.

But to further loosen an already loose thread: I remember an interview
with
Asha in which she counters accusations of a Mangeshkar monopoly. I read
this
in the early 1980s or thereabouts....she was talking about how she had
to
struggle to establish herself against Lata, Geeta, and Shamshad, and
how she
had sometimes to settle for just one song on a soundtrack while the
other
songs went to one of the other three. She said that SDB gave her "just
one
song with which to make an impact" in SUJATA, "kaalii ghaTa chhaye,"
with
Geeta getting the rest.


Not that Asha's interested memories are reliable....

Rafi and Mukesh had "Saaranga teri yaad mein"
AFAIK, the only two tandem songs of Lata and Asha that were officially
released
were the title song of Bin Baadal Barsaat, and Samay o dheere chalo,
from the
recent Rudaali. But I'm open to corrections.

I have some reservations regarding the last example, "ek dharti hai
ek hai gagan" from 'Adhikar' (1954). I don't think the second version
of the song is by Asha. I suspect that it is an error in the Geet
Kosh.

I first encountered this lovely composition of Avinash Vyas when I
watched the videotape of the film. The film opens with this song.
I might have been under the influence of Avinash Vyas's wonderful
Geeta numbers from 'Har Har Mahadev' and 'Naag Mani'. I jumped to
the conclusion that it was a Geeta song. I had featured the song
in the series, "Songs Not Included In RJGK 28" and claimed the
singer to be Geeta.


The song occurs twice in the film, within a fairly short span of
time. Kishore's first wife who used to sing the song is now dead
and he has moved to a big city. He hears the song and is puzzled.
The sequence seems to be just an add-on, as the film doesn't
pursue it. The second version is slighly slower and somewhat smaller
(3'20" rather than 4', and two stanzas rather than three). It didn't
occur to me while watching the tape that the singer might be different
from the first version.


I was alerted to my error when, much later, I ran into a cassette,
"Hits of Meena Kapoor". The first version of "ek dharti hai" was
included in it. By then I had a copy of the first edition of the
Geet Kosh. It confirmed that the first version was by Meena Kapoor.
For the second version, the singer column was left blank, as was
the column for the record reference number, hinting that the version
was not released.


The recently relased second edition of Geet Kosh does say that the
second version is by Asha and chorus, with no release reference. I
believe it is an error. Having been bitten once, I am reluctant to
definitively identify the singer of the second version! I can't say
if
it is Meena Kapoor or not. I am, however, certain that if the singer
is different, it is Geeta, not Asha. Also, there is no chorus portion
in the video I saw.


Asha is the main singer in the soundtrack, with three songs. Geeta
is also there in the humourous duet with Kishore: "kamaataa hu.n
bahut kuchh magar, kamaai Doob jaati hai".


Folks, check out the video. It is an excellent soundtrack (has one
of the early yodelling songs of Kishore: "tikDambaazi") and an
early theme with a feminist twist. It got remade as 'Sweekar Kiya
Main Ne' in the early 1980s, with Shabana Azmi and Vinod Mehra
in the lead, with music by Usha Khanna.
