I do think that KS voice has changed, but i feel that it is his own fault. He can still comeback into form all he needs is to practise. I feel that he has lost the control and and depth he used to have. He is still a very good singer no doubt and at one time was the undisputed king. Even his rival Udit conceeded that KS was a better singer than him but look at the position now, Udit is very much ahead of KS. It is quite sad for me as a KS fan to write this but it is my honest feeling. His songs in 'Zindagi Ek Juaa' are a force to be reckoned with. His vocal quality in that album was unparralleled and even to this day i get goosebumps when i listen to his versions of 'dil to dil hai', 'yeh zindagi hai ek juaa', 'kabhi kuch khoya' but sadly at this time i doubt his ability to sing like that ever again.
Age is a big factor when talking about voice quality and it could simply be that time has taken its toll on him e.g. Lata's voice is a prime example of what time can do, eve rafi and kishore endured changes to their vocals over time. And considering the amount of songs he has sung 9000+ its no surprise that his voice has changed. Even in the examples mentioned above he is lacking that 'x' factor in his voice which was so evident in albums like Aashiqui, Saajan, Dil hai ke maanta nahin, Zindagi Ek Juaa, and many more. Many ppl criticise Sanu for having a nasal style but i dont have a problem with that. I feel his nasal style brings more emotions to a song and he used to use that style earlier on in his career so it is not a new thing. Problem is that nowadays it seems that every one of songs has a prominent nasal touch to it whereas in the 90s he used this effect sparingly (notice zindagi ek juaa, his vocals are comlpetely free of this effect) and only when the song or situation demanded it. But now, even in MJS, although his voice is bass heavy and has good projection, there is a defiante nasal edge. I'm not having a go at KS but if he is still as versatile as he used to be then how come he is lacking in control and displays a constant nasal touch. Maybe its lack of practise but his quality has deteriorated and i can only hope and pray that he comes back to form and it is sad to see a singer of his stature be relegated to the sidelines by other 'ordinary' singers. |
