Dear Noor Jehan Fans!
Madam Noor Jehan reigned supreme over the South Asian music scene for more than six decades. On the occasion of her 5th death anniversary, I would like to post a glossy overview of her work as a singer. In this thread, I will mention the best songs of each year from 1939 to 1999 (60 years) and will share a song from each year as song of the year. I request you all to participate in the discussion and share your comments. 1939 Best of the year: Shala Jawaniyan Mane (Gul-e-Bakwali) Pinjre Wich Qaid Jawani (Gul-e-Bakwali) Ek Sohne Jae Jungle Wich (Gul-e-Bakwali) Song of the Year: Shala Jawaniyan Mane (Gul-e-Bakwali) |

There were other "Noor Jehan's" working at that time and that muddles Noor Jehan filmography. Noor Jehan didn't act in Red Signal, Umeed, Susral, Chandni, Dheeraj, Faryad, Maharana Pratab, Jadoogar, Sofia, Mirabai, and Abida. |

Noor Jehan didn't act in Red Signal, Umeed, Susral, Chandni, Dheeraj, Faryad, Maharana Pratab, Jadoogar, Sofia, Mirabai, and Abida. Ok Dhall, Now read my post carefully. I will never claim like you that I am 100% correct and even if I make such claims and proven wrong, I will admit my mistake. Now let us start with the movies you "claim" singer actress Noor Jehan appeared in. Abida (1947) - was produced by Hind Pictures by husband-wife team of SwaranLata-Nazir. It was directed by Nazir and cast included Swaranlata, Kumar, Majid, Noorjahan, and Nazima. Swaranlata was the leading lady of this film. Noor Jehan in this film was some character actress. Abida and Wamaq Azra (1946) were one of the last films by Nazir-Swaranlata team before they migrated to Pakistan. The music of both films was provided by A.R. Qureshi and in Wamaq Azra, Uma Devi (Tun Tun) sang the songs. Meera Bai (1947) - was produced by Shalimar Pictures established by W.Z. Ahmed. W.Z. Ahmed's wife Neena (also known as 'mysterious Neena') was the heroine of this film. W.Z. Ahmed and his wife Neena also migrated to Pakistan, and produced/directed only 2 films there ... Wadaah and Roohi. Detailed Sketch of Neena is provided by Saadat Hasan Manto in his book 'Stars from Another Sky'. The cast of this film includes Nirmal Kumar, Neena, Shyama, M. Parvez, Noorjahan, Neelam Kothari, Bazid Khan, Tiwari. The Noor Jehan in this film is character actress "Noor Jehan". Chandni (1942) was produced by Ranjit Film Company. In most of their films they used to cast Khursheed Begum as the leading lady. The cast of this film includes Khurshid, Dixit, Kamla, Noorjahan, Kantilal, Rajkumari, Tarabai, Ishwarlal, Rama Shukal. The Noor Jehan in this film is the character actress "Noor Jehan". Actually if you have hindi film directory, the name "Noor Jehan" appears as early as 1931 in silent film Hind Ke Tare with cast including Noor Jehan and Malti Devi and continues all the way upto 1969's Anjaan Hai Koi starring :- Aroona Irani, Helen, Tiwari, Feroz Khan, Nalini, Mohan Choti, Jayshree T., Noorjahan. Even a casual Noor Jehan fan knows that Noor Jehan - the singer actress started her career in 1935 in Punjabi Film Pind Ki Kuri made in Calcutta. And after she migrated to Pakistan... the name "Noor Jehan" appearing in credits after 1947 in hindi films must be some other Noor Jehan. There were quite a few "Noor Jehan's" working in hindi films as the name is very common. There is another singer Noor Jehan too who sang for Madan Mohan in Heer Ranjha (1970). By 1947, Noor Jehan was a BIG STAR, do you really think she will play character roles in films like Abidah and Meera Bai etc opposite leading ladies like Neena and Swaranlata? Therefore, I rest my case. This post has been edited by Ummer: Oct 13 2009, 04:35 AM |
