There have been a spate of posts around the Independence Day period with some jingoistic song uploads. I just want to mention a historic tidbit. Why was Independence Day 15th August (14th for us Pakistanis just to be contrary
![]() Lord Louis Mountbatten, naval hero in WWII against Japan and final Viceroy of India personally chose this date (without consulting anyone or seeking prior approval) because it was the second anniversary of the Japanese surrender in WWII - a special occasion for him. Of course, it being a Friday was deeply disturbing to India's Jyotshi community who found the date very inauspicious... Kind Regards Faraaj Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent. - Victor Hugo There is only one better thing than music - live music. - Jacek Bukowski I hate music, especially when it's played. - Jimmy Durante No good opera plot can be sensible, for people do not sing when they are feeling sensible. - W. H. Auden |

Dear Faraaj bhai, Let me chip in with another bit of oddity, if it can be called that. Why the independence day of Pakistan & India are celebrated on separate days, even though the partition happened at the same time. The time zone difference of 30 minutes meant that 00:00 hour on 15th Aug was still 23:30 hours in Pakistan. Hence, Pakistan celebrates its Independence day on 14th & India on 15th. Whether, the Jyotish community in India was riled or not is a different matter. The fact is both the nations, lamentably, have never achieved their true potential, considering the wealth of human & natural resources that they possess. Let us hope, better times will visit both the countries. The mood was very well captured by a Tamil poet - India got its freedom in midnight, Till how long do I have to wait, for the dawn to come ? Best wishes, Suresh This post has been edited by madsur: Aug 17 2009, 08:06 AM |
