I just want to mention a historic tidbit. Why was Independence Day 15th August (14th for us Pakistanis just to be contrary )? Lord Louis Mountbatten, naval hero in WWII against Japan and final Viceroy of India personally chose this date (without consulting anyone or seeking prior approval) because it was the second anniversary of the Japanese surrender in WWII - a special occasion for him. Of course, it being a Friday was deeply disturbing to India's Jyotshi community who found the date very inauspicious...
