Kohli Artiste 1: Dara Singh Artiste 2: Bambi Artiste 3: Ullhas Category : Action G S Kohli remains a highly under-rated music director - and his name is practically in oblivion - I came across some books about music directors which do not even mention his name !! One only has to listen to some of his beautiful compositions for Shikari, Adventures of Robin Hood, Faulad, Mr India, Char Darvesh, Jaalsaaz etc. to understand the quality of this music director. Such great tunes and what excellent orchestration ! And why not ? After all he gained some really high class experience working as an assistant to the highly successful O P Nayyar for around 15 years during OPN's best period. Film after film of O P Nayyar - each one such a great hit - had the contribution of G S Kohli somewhere in the songs, in the rhythm, in the background music etc - films like Aar Paar, Mr & Mrs 55, CID, Tumsa nahin dekha, Naya Daur, Howrah bridge, 12 O'clock, Ek musafir ek hasina, Kashmir ki kali, Mere Sanam, Sawan ki ghata, Mohabbat zindagi hai, Yeh raat phir na aayegi, Kismat, Dil aur mohabbat etc etc.- all had his contributions. The sad part of the story is that when he tried to step out on his own as a music director - despite making such wonderful, high-quality songs like Rafi's 'Maana mere haseen sanam' (1965) and Asha's 'Yeh rangeen mehfil' (1963) - he was unsuccessful commercially and had to return to a background role as assistant to O P Nayyar. Must have been a great disappointment for him, no doubt. But such is the world of films. No mercy - even for talented individuals. It's also very very hard to find his soundtracks in mp3 form. And also---some of the films he worked on are really a lot of fun to watch! |
